Reporting the wrong character by accident
Nanood
So I saw an offensive name today. And although I have never reported one before this name pushed the levels of acceptance. Won't say it here but it was just another play on words to sound out something really offensive.
Anyway, i selected the player and did the motions but at the end of it I saw that I had reported the wrong player !
Wondering if anyone has accidently done this and if it resulted in any mini bans for wasting the staffs time. I sent a support ticket explaining my actions so I hope it gets read.

The reporting system is so bad. If someone pissed me off in kamadan AD1, i can go to my gh, spam him till the cows come home but he cant report me coz im not in the same dist. (This has happened in reverse to me, I was getting spammed). Luckily I can ignore them, but thi error is just 2 big to ignore.

Don't sweat it. They're not going to suspend you for one bad report. They will, however, suspend people who are abusing the report system by repeatedly reporting innocents.

anet dont care, and wont care.
there is a bot in Temple of Ages d1 for a week now,( I think most people know who)
he has been trying to buy 20 ectos for 100g instead of 100k.
It is so obvious that he is a bot, and I bet he is reported many many times.
Result? Still in Temple of Ages now. 'Nuff said.

What you can do though is take SS and then go through the support system and attach them (although theyd tell you to use the /ignore function almost certainly).

I did just that with a good clear screenshot of the team chat (CB >.< it involved bad language). I got back a reply with the usual we need more details crap and they also said if i had any screenshots it would help.

I reported him for botting as well, but only after ALSO accidentally reporting someone else...
honest mistake though, don't think its all that bad.

actually , i do not think you can report the wrong person.
because to report someone you have to click on the player, then type /report (player name) right?
if you click someone else and type another name that would make it unreportable? right?
Just asking
Thank Darcy, its just that i think, if I remember correctly, I've only reported someone once, which isn't even successful, because I type /report (name) and the game message told me to click on the player. turn out I/they were lucky the report fail, I should have insisted my stand, I knew they were lagging but the other teammates keep pestering me to report. anyway, just wandering, now i know, wiki wiki wiki lol must remember.

@pumpkin pie - There are two ways to report in-game.
1. Click on person and type /report
2. Type /report and person's name
http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Report
@OP - I don't think you will get banned for one occurence of mis-reporting. And you have the explanation on record.
@Lykan - I believe everyone's first response from Support is a canned one. Which doesn't mean that no one looked at your message.

Thanks for the replies.. I'll be more careful next time.

I've never got all this "reporting" thing. It sound like the comunist undercover secret militia where anyone (your friend, your neighbor, the person next in line in a shop) could've been an agent reporting on what you're doing... more or less accurately. Depending of the interests of involved people.
Like really, can't you people just live your life and mind your business? Or all you have to do nowadays in GW is wait in some outpost waiting for the next thing to report.
I find that really sad. I think reporting is a really bad system only opened for abuse, and people should grow up and figure normal ways to deal with "uncomfortable" situations.
So what if X has a weird name? When did you even look at his name? Unless I'm in a party with someone I don't even see names, i just ignore the blue text on my screen. And *if* I would be in a party with someone that has an offensive name I would just leave or pm that person telling them that I believe their name is offensive, or both.
In order to find offensive names you would have to be sitting there waiting to be offended by a name. And there isn't anything in the world that could stop people from inventing ways of getting offensive suggestions in their name, and some of them are very legal.
Is this poor guys name offensive or the problem is with you that you get offended at it?

I wonder how many people would report that name. Bleah... grow up ppl.

It amazes me that people will take insult upon insult and then spend time complaining about it, when they can easily add the name to their ignored list the first time the conversation turns nasty.
You can even end the conversation by getting in the last word:
"have a nice life buddy: /ignored"
(then quickly add the name to ignored list)

yeah i reported the wrong person before, too. my guild leader by accident...
some guy was account sale spamming in kamadan on the 2007 halloween event, so i thought i clicked on his name but my guild leader was still selected...it was embarassing because i wasnt sure if the guy you reported gets a message about the report just like you do. i still dont know because i never asked
anyway, nothing happened so i woldnt worry about it

People don't "wait around" to be abused, but if some idiot starts spamming insults or general hate in all chat, I can't think of a reason why he shouldn't be reported. And lol @ the "communist" crap; you know that you can call the police in America too, right?

Well I think that A-Net does care. The fact that they are giving us back our even this weekend proves that.
A-Net Owns Gw and as such they care about its tenants like a land lord cares for his/her renters. After all we do not own GW but rather we bought the rights to USE GW. It is NOT our own.
So that taken care of, everyone make mistakes. no one is perfect except the one who died on a tree. A-net is most thankful for your attempt to right the situation before an action was taken. I am sure that the person that you reported did not get banned.
I am also sure that if people are taking liberties in game and abusing others that A-Net would like to know so that they can evict the offenders for a time or remove that account permanently.

Nice way of putting it.
I would think they would (well should) investigate your report and they'd see it that person wasn't doing anything wrong.
Reporting is there for a reason. It's to keep abusive, hateful, and offensive things that can pop up in the game to a minimum. If you're thick-skinned, good for you. Others don't like to see such things in a game that should be free of those kinds of things.
Sad thing is, you can ignore people yes, but when they get others to spam you as well that can also be a problem. Not a lot you can do about that though...more for the ignore list. lol.
The being in same district thing can also be another problem (ex - someone buying/selling accounts - which is not allowed - they can spam a few times and switch dists and no one can report them).

The report system is broken beyond words. You can get close to the heart of the problem with the words "McCarthyism."
I have not heard of a single case of temp or permanent ban for 'abusing' the report system. What is abuse? If I don't get offended by anything, can I still report for someone swearing constantly? If I get offended really easily, can I report for someone for saying "u sux" or "noob"? Don't act like everyone is only a clear offender or clearly innocent; there are a few of those, but most people fall into shades of gray in the middle.
I don't know how much these reports are viewed, but I know that know for a fact if they are looked at, they recieve only a passing glance. "Yup, that was a report." Try this, go into 8-man PvP, pick one person on the other team, have everyone on your team report them. Far more often than it should, something like 10% of the time(pulling from my limited experience), this results in a temp ban. Getting a mid-match ban is worse than getting a mid-match err7. The report system can give a huge in-game advantage; if you want to promote competitive e-sport there can't be something like this in-game.
I mean seriously how often do you think people are reporting out of duty? Even if you were this is like civilian policing: inept at best, but free free FREE
How often do you think people report out of anger, annoyance, or a vendetta? I would venture to say more than 90%. Yes, lets throw emotion in and give jury controll to the accuser when we don't really have an acting, neutral third party.
The report system was a band-aid for a problem Anet either couldn't identify or didn't want to spend effort to fix.

I wouldn't worry about it, I'm sure no one even paid any attention to your report.
Anet just set up the reporting system so that they can claim to be doing something about it, but in reality you're more likely to get banned yourself for reporting things.
For example, in PVP, if you're in RA, and you have a leecher, and you're hte only one who reports them, you get dishonor points.
One night I got enough dishonor points to keep me from being able to play merely because I was the only one reporting leechers.
The system is pointless. But again they didn't introduce it to fix anything, just to make it appear that they did.
