On at least 2 occasions characters have changed, both on April 1st.

The first time the sexes swapped then later we all became matchstick people.

That's a global change of every character and their armour, so how hard is it to code in.

I ask because I have no idea at all of the resources needed to achieve a change of hairstyle on an individual basis.

So we may have players saying it will take resources from gw2 but how many resources ?
If it delays gw2 by a week what's the big deal if it delays it by 6 months well ok forget it.

What would be nice is for someone to find out and actually tell the players.

We have the ability to give feedback to Arenanet to make suggestions but its all for nothing if the information isn't commented on by someone who knows.

I would welcome actual return feedback.

Thank you for your suggestions for character editing but this would take a team of 6 people 3 months to do and therefore don't be offended when we say it will be a cold day in the crystal desert before it happens.

Or Thanks for the suggestion of seven heroes in the game, you must be out of your tiny mind.

Something along those lines would allow players to focus their suggestions on more profitable ideas and stop harping on about ideas that have already been written off.

Gaile Gray said it was going to happen in the "distant future" sometime in 2005 I believe...

I think it's prettyyyyyyyy distant at this point.

And adding just hair would just piss me off. It has to have face...

At this point since it is such a logical feature to add (and some people have said WoW and others games have this?) it's likely that they will be adding this in GW2 as further incentive to buy. Remember that if we get too comfy here in GW1, we'd have no reason to go out and spend more money.

like its been posted this has been requested a zillion times. and i still /sign.

i think this is one of the most requested things for guild wars. it is beyond me why they don't do it as the next big patch to the game.

I whole heartidly 100% agree that at the bare minimum facial hair / head hair should be re-colorable and re-styled. I just deleted a character with 2 sets of FoW and multiple 100k+ customized items because I couldn't stand how she looked (I made her back in prophecies and came back a few months ago). If I could have just changed her hair color, or changed her hair style I would have not lost well over 2,000 plat.

Bet your really going to be annoyed then if babrershops come in the next update lol

Seriously wouldn't it have been better given that commitment to a character to either not play it or buy a character slot if you needed it that much.

Too late now of course.

Face Change? idk, no such thing as surgery in GW.

Hair Change? Yes, Please.

Color Change(s)? Yes Please, you can get tans/lack of sunlight, you can dye hair.

Name Change? Yes, please.

More options for your character's looks? Yes Please.

Will any be implemented? Nope.

There should be at least a one week-long chance to change these things. And be able to make my Assassin and Ritualist look Caucasian instead of Asian. I think all 3 campaign facial looks should be available for each campaign you create your character in.

But like it was said, not going to be implemented (although Linsey adding at least a name change and hair changer NPC would make her even more loved among the community, especially Guru community).

Either way, I don't care enough to complain. I'll be grateful if just one of the things I first mentioned gets implemented, but won't complain if they don't.

I simply cannot agree to this sort of change. Think about it for a second, you want the ability to change your charcter appearence anytime you get a nwe armor that will match it's eyes..... And what about the storyline?

Actually she never said any such thing. Her posts on the matter are linked a number of the past posts of this suggestion (of which there are dozens) and basically she said it is something the dev's would consider in the future - stated back in 2005 - but later, early 2007 I believe, basically said that the devs didn't really have the time to do it or something like that so it's probably not something they'd be working on.

I'd still love to see the ability to edit my characters, but I just don't think we should go putting words in Gaile's mouth. She NEVER said that it WOULD happen, only that discussions were being held on the POSSIBILITY of it MAYBE happening in the distant future.

ive always wanted this to happen, and after the april fools sex/hair/face change, i really do not understand what the problem is. they SHOWED us that they can change it, so just let us already?

ps - for people crying storyline, we can change into candy corn necro-women, elf mes-men, norn warrior-men, i mean... what would adding another "change appearance" tonic that just... never ended do?

For most that would be a lot, its just an inconvenience for me. Its also nice to start over fresh sometimes (not to mention I got legendary survivor on my new monk).

Remember the Prohecies Ascension?

If you consider that when you ascend you can enter the Mist because you can 'leave' your body or that your body is transformed in some way (when you 'burn'), you could consider your body as something more like clothing, and be able to change it or transform it.

Like a transmigration.

I honestly wouldn't even mind paying like $5-10 to change one character's appearance, if they wanted to make money off it. In the long run, in terms of time vs money I would have made working instead of playing GW, paying $5-10 to change how a character looks rather than making a new one, getting all the skills, armors, weapons and titles again would be amazingly more cost effective.

I am in a transitional period.

GRE

Here is my argument:
1- Every change takes a bit of coding, which costs ANet money. Compensate them.
2- Changing charecter's names (which I would like) and appearance (would also like)needs to be kept to a minimum to avoid scamming. There has to be an obstilce preventing people from scamming 50 times a day.

How? $$$$, greenbacks, denero (if that is how it is spelled), mula

I would pay CASH MONEY for this feature.
A fair price would be $5 for 5 charecter changes. I am 98% sure that every single person who really wants to change their charecter would be willing to pony up a 5-spot to do so for a handful of re-customizations.

That would give Anet a little more flow time and again (just like additional char slots do) and make their customers happier!

i agree on the fact tyrian born players 3 years ago have to stick with ugly haircuts when factions and nightfall have better options. there should be an npc barber or something retarted to give people the option to choose the new styles from other campaigns.

Here are things that I consider worthy to make as appearance change for GW.

Eyes. I can think of a couple of effects that can make your eyes look cool. Hell, it would be a great variant than the eye color each face has by default.

Hair color/style. My hair is currently gray, but what if there's a way in the game to turn it into ivory white and make it longer? That sounds like something people would like.

Facial Chang-*record skip!* Wait... No. Except for the eyes, but no. You want this to be like D&D, or WoW? Altering your face in GW is like a medieval knight getting plastic surgery. THEY DON'T GO TOGETHER. Even if facial altering magic is an excuse that's still bending the reality of the game. Forget it. End of that discussion.

So, given all these possible barber shop services, why hasn't Anet been able to implement it? Simple. They either don't want to and don't care about it, or it's way too complicated for them to plug it into the games system. Imagine, eye altering things is like a helmet, or a mask. We all know we can wear only one helmet/mask. This eye altering concept gets in the way of that. Hair? If that weren't so problematic they would have add it in anyway. They didn't so there has to be something going on with hair altering not in the game functions. My guess as to why we don't have anything like this is because of the effort. Oblivion has that feature, but not everything should be like Oblivion.

Just not going to happen. I nominate this thread be closed.

Yeah well, it's a good thing you don't have a say in anything then, isn't it?

As far as I know, Oblivion doesn't have a feature to change your character's appearance after you get out of the sewer. You can open up console (`) and use a command (showracemenu) as a hack to change your appearance or even race. But it isn't intended --- if you just hit "ok" it resets your stats. The only way you don't bork your character is making a new save while the console and race menu is still open. It's like that because it's a hack and it isn't intended to be able to be used, just like "tgm" for god-mode isn't intended to be used. And as far as I know, this only works for PC because I don't believe Xbox even has console commands.

As for eye colors, beyond that being about along the lines of changing faces in terms of realism (who had contacts back then..?), from my modeling experience I'd imagine that it would be much harder to make new eye colors available and selectable than to simply let people rechoose their other existing facial features.

The way the game organizes its UV's, I'm assuming it's either batched automatically, since the texture changes every time you change any piece of clothing. That would mean that the single texture that is your character would have to have parts automatically replaced on it, which I'm assuming are either generated, done with vertex coloring as per dyes, or are pre-made and called. Assuming they have a face texture alone, and it's automatically generated in an image with whatever armor and colors are called, that's still assuming they would need to make a new face texture per each eye color per each face per each skin tone. So, if you have 10 faces, 7 skin tones, 5 eye colors... You're already looking at a ton of new textures having to be made. Assuming that were the case.

But any way you go about it, to change the eye color, they would either have to re-do every single 100's of thousands of textures for each eye color variant, UV the eyes a hell of a lot better and use vertex coloring, or do a whole mess that I don't even know to make it automatically generate the proper textures they would use.

Any way you look at it, if it's code or pre-made textures that currently determines how a character looks (other than colorless), then changing the visual appearance with the options already present - face, height, hair, hair color, skin color would be leagues easier than adding an entirely new option and giving existing ones the ability to change.

I honestly don't know how they do it in GW. It's a lot more simple with Lineage II. There really aren't that many face options, most have about 3 different faces, there are no different skin tones. There's only 3-4 hair colors for most races. The UV's are separate for each, and the textures called from existing ones. It's rather simple though... They don't have dyes, so all the textures are pre-existing. And my understanding of how a dye system would work is rather vague.

But, on L2 they just have potions to change each of the options you had to choose from in the character creation, minus sex. I'm assuming the reason for that is that for a sex change, the database has to be changed and the server has to be restarted for the changes to take effect. So that means you'd have to change the sex while they were offline, and restart the entire server. Assuming GW is similar, they'd probably have to have a sign up for people who wanted their character's sex changed, and it would be done once a month with the monthly update (and thereby server restart).

I know that models don't have a problem changing for the most part, as there are many different armors, but assuming that the character's body mesh can't change makes me assume that it simply isn't coded into L2 because it wasn't really set as a priority of things to do. Obviously textures and models can change which is displayed by the hair, hair color and face change potions. Then that makes me think that it would probably be possible, and I'm assuming easy, for Guild Wars.

The reason I think it would be easy for Guild Wars --- in the character selection as I'd proposed, is that you aren't logged in and the game isn't rendering your character at the moment and pinging the database to see if anything changed that it needs to write to your character in the tables. So it would be about the equivalent of changing a L2 player's class in the database, which can be done while they're logged out and doesn't require a restart.

Beyond that, I'm assuming it'd be easy because the things that can change in L2 that don't require a restart are things that are available for a particular sex. So, I assume from that it'd be relatively easy to let people re-choose their appearance in GW, they just wouldn't be able to change their sex --- assuming the same is true here.

But any way of it, I don't give a good god damn if it's realistic or not. If they're going to add it, I want to be able to change my face. PvP characters in their entirety aren't realistic if you want to go on a crying spree about something. I can make a character with one name, then I can log out and change how they look entirely, including their sex. Hell, I can even change their class. It's already being done en masse... Wake up.

I don't personally care so much about changing my characters' faces, but I know that since the lip-syncing update a while back a lot of the facial textures got screwed up. My ranger's face changed significantly, although not to the point that I disliked it. I have friends who would love to be able to change their faces because of the screw up, or just because better faces have become available since the initial Prophecies release.

I would rather see a hair-changing option before a face-changing one (anything but Tyrian monk hairstyles Dx ). But both would be very nice.

The first bit quoted here gives us some insight into what's wrong with your 2nd bit:

Going from gray to white, and getting longer...your character's getting older. As we age, don't we change our shape, sometimes more than a little? And this holds for our faces too. I've gone through spells where I've lost weight, and the fat in the cheeks disappears a little; the face looks a little longer, less round. And then the holidays come 'round and I pork out and the cheeks fill up. The nose, incidentally, never stops growing as you age.

Facial hair on men changes over time.

Heck, our character are running around getting shot at, hacked, burned, frozen, abraded by sandstorms, killed, raised from the dead, thumped by hammers and fists, crippled, dazed, blinded. Wouldn't that alter your face? I'm still the same good-looking ranger, necro, rit....despite the thousands of hours of battle.

It would be nice, sure. Gender and name changes as well. A few of my characters I've realized I prefer their female counterparts.

Won't happen, but /signed anyways.
