And have one shield for every type of damage.
And then have your inventory open during the match, and switch your shield every time a new type of damage hits you.

I'll typically load my caster shields with +30 life mods as well, but the main reason I use it is for shield bash.

the purpose of a caster shield is to make you harder to kill. staff and offhand mods just dont cut it and are better off being modded for efficiency... in pve caster shields are rarely needed but cant hurt in the right circumstances.
