I have recently made a portable Guild Wars launcher available here:

Guild Wars Portable 1.00.1

Any updates I make to the launcher can be found there. So far the launcher handles the registry entries, does not run Guild Wars when the media used is read-only, and copies screens and templates to the the appropriate folder when using Windows Vista or newer (presumably Windows 7 will be the same as Vista in that regard, see excerpt below).

Excerpt from my post on PortableApps.com:

"This is the portable launcher only. You need to copy your game client and data (Gw.exe and Gw.dat) from your local installation into the App/GuildWars folder. You also need to copy the game setup (GwSetup.exe), available for download here, into the App/GuildWars folder. If you want to use your screenshots or templates, please include your Screens and/or Templates folder in the App/GuildWars folder. If the OS detected is Windows Vista or newer (e.g. Windows version 6.x or greater), the launcher will backup any existing screenshots and templates for the current user and copy your screenshots and templates for use to the <user profile directory>\Documents\Guild Wars\ directory, and upon exiting Guild Wars the launcher will back up your screenshots and templates to your portable drive and restore pre-existing screenshots and templates. If your screenshots and templates do not copy over when using Windows Vista, please make sure that you are not running the launcher in compatibility mode for Windows XP or older."

Any feedback would be appreciated.

Wow, sounds fascinating.

Would make it possible to run GW from a large (>4GB) USB key, yes?

This should be posted in the Community Works forum, here - http://www.guildwarsguru.com/forum/f...splay.php?f=22

That forum requires moderator approval, so it won't appear for a while.

Just submitted new thread to the Community Works forum, hopefully this thread will be deleted/merged upon approval with the note I left in the new thread.

Currently Guild Wars (full image download several months ago) takes up 3.64GB on my 3.72GB total 4GB flash drive. I do run Guild Wars on a 8GB flash drive now, but that will not necessarily help because FAT32 has a max file size limit of 4GB.

One question - does it remove all traces from the host computer when you exit GW? In particular, does it remove registry entries and delete the screens and templates from Vista?

sounds nice... if I'm understanding this right it will be a boon to anyone of us who have dealt with the hassle of running GW off of a portable drive in the past. Two Thumbs up for the effort and if it indeed works as stated I'll give you a nice warm handshake (virtual). :d

@Quaker: Yes, the launcher does delete the HKCU\Software\ArenaNet\Guild Wars entries and key as well as the HKCU\Software\ArenaNet key if it is empty after that and it does delete the screens and templates under Vista after copying them back to the portable media after Guild Wars has been terminated.

@digggaa: Well, it depends. Assuming you are allowed to run executables on said school computer, if the port for Guild Wars (6112) is blocked by the school (which it seems to be), unless you can convince the school's network administrator otherwise, you're out of luck. Trying to circumvent around the blocked ports isn't a good idea.
