So is the Dervish basically like a Melee healer / Defensive buffer?

Described as "a scythe-wielding holy warrior", they are a close-range profession capable of hitting multiple opponents and utilizing enchantments to deal damage, inflict conditions, and protect and heal herself/himself. Many of their abilities strike multiple foes, allowing them to be fierce combatants on the battlefield. That explains it

I like to think of the dervish as an enchantment based warrior.

No, paragons don't have enchantments:P
I think of the dervish as a warrior, someone that uses alot of physical attacks for damage, based on enchantments, using enchants to help ias, heal, defense.

kind of think dervishes as mending wammos on steroids actually. it all fits, because they have:
-built in hundred blades
-uber mending and uber healing breeze rolled into one skill
-uber sever artery and uber gash rolled into one skill
-uber final thrust, without the annoying conditional
-uber defensive buffs, that are actually good
really, i think anet created the dervish by looking at the mending wammo, and made the dervish to be exactly like it except a lot better.

Dervishes are for killing stuff and staying alive.

Dervishes are meant to be decent tanks while putting on a lot of pressure and spread deadly conditions (via Wounding Strike) quickly, and deals a lot of damage(maybe not quite like a sin spike, but harder to counter and more durable).
