Thinking about an all AMD build soon? It will pay to wait. AMD is going head to head with Intel again, and this time, they have guns big enough to put some serious fire on Intel. Their processor launch has been pushed back, but worth the wait.

Here is the scoop:

AMD will be launching the new Athlon processor series and their bigger badder brother, the Phenom II processor series. The CPUs will now launch under the latter brand names, but will feature a 3 digit model number instead of the annoying 4 digit insanity the current Phenoms and Opterons have.

Here is the breakdown of the launch times and details on the processors.

January 2009:

  • <font color="purple"> Phenom II X4 </font> 940 at 3GHz (with 8MB total cache using the AM2+ socket
  • <font color="purple"> Phenom II X4</font> 920 at 2.8GHz (with 8MB of total cache on the AM2+ socket)

February 2009:

  • <font color="purple"> Phenom II X4</font> 910 2.6GHz (with 8MB total cache on the AM3 socket)
  • <font color="purple"> Phenom II X4</font> 810 2.6GHz (with 6MB total cache on the AM3 socket)
  • <font color="purple"> Phenom II X4</font> 805 2.5GHz (with 6MB total cache on the AM3 socket)
  • <font color="purple"> Phenom II X3</font> 720 2.8GHz (with 7.5MB total cache on the AM3 socket)
  • <font color="purple"> Phenom II X3</font> 710 2.6GHz (with 7.5MB total cache on the AM3 socket)

April 2009:

  • <font color="purple"> Phenom II X4</font> 945 3.0GHz (with 8MB total cache on the AM3 socket)
  • <font color="darkgreen"> Athlon X4 </font> 615 2.7GHz (with 2MB total cache on the AM3 socket)
  • <font color="darkgreen"> Athlon X4 </font> 605 2.5GHz (with 2MB total cache on the AM3 socket)
  • <font color="darkgreen"> Athlon X3 </font> 420 2.8GHz (with 1.5MB total cache on the AM3 socket)
  • <font color="darkgreen"> Athlon X3</font> 410 2.6GHz (with 1.5MB total cache on the AM3 socket)

June 2009:
  • <font color="darkgreen"> Athlon X2 </font> 240 2.8GHz (with 2MB total cache on the AM3 socket)
  • <font color="darkgreen"> Athlon X2</font> 235 2.7GHz (with 2MB total cache on the AM3 socket)

excessive happy faces are... excessive.

anyways, can't wait to see the performance numbers and prices on these things. from what i've heard, these chips can more or less match the core 2 quads. if AMD can sell these things at compelling prices, or have very interesting advantages (such as, being faster in games), they'll have a winner.

Fixed, that was an HTML code issue. The faces were unintentional.

Pretty awesome tbh. I'll definately wait for these before buying a new computer, even tho I probably wait for Diablo III or GW2 release to come closer anyway. Intel been ruling too long, it's time to AMD to get something effective to the market. I'm not really looking to run any WR SuperPi times but rather something I can run with high 24/7 clocks. Wonder if these overclock as well as the current Intels. At least that rumour about Phenom II X4 running Crysis at 4GHz+ with air and 5GHz+ with dry ice or LN2 promises good. Also read about the leak from Turkish HW site about Phenom II X4 (940 I suppose) running at basic clocks (3GHz) at 26C and overclocked to 3,4GHz at 36C with air! If these are true these are going to be hell of a processors.

might be building a new rig soon... is it worth to wait till jan of february? i mean, ppl kept telling me how amazing nehalem was, and now that it's finally here, AMD is releasing their answer to nehalem... is phenom II worth the wait? and does anyone have any idea what the prices are going to be? will they basically be stronger? price/quality i mean.

phenom II will compete with intel's core 2 family of processors. it most definitely won't be able to compete with nehalem in pure speed. from all indications, phenom II seems to be as fast as the penryn core 2 quads. however, with the integrated memory controller, they MIGHT (and this is a pure guess) be noticeably faster in gaming compared to the core 2 quads.

expect prices to be about the same as the core 2 quads, since those are the phenom II's main competition.

I think that Phenom IIs are going to beat Intel's Qxxxx processors but agreed that they probably won't beat Nehalems. Tho, it doesn't really matter in gaming, graphic cards will be the bottleneck most probably. Except if you're going to get two 4870x2s or three 280s I wouldn't go for Nehalems if it's gaming where you need that power. I'd definately wait for Phenom IIs before buying new comp. Actually myself, I'm not going to buy anything before AM3 is out.
