you need to be a ranger and charm the pet when you find it in the wilderness (granted you dont have a pet at a time (if you do you need to find a tamer (usually outside of cities) and give up your pet (like my use of parenthesis in parenthesis in parenthesis )))
Tomo
juggernaut, that was uncalled for. No need to shove it back in his face.
Im also wondering where to get a bear pet.

It isn't that simple at least in pre -searing ascalon. The bear uses a move called break charm wich cancels ur charm animal.the only way i have found to prevent this is to knock the bear down. Maybe tho you can charm a bear later in the game easier than this.

bear - Available in the Southern Shiverpeaks.
warthog - Available in the Maguuma Jungle
lizard - Availble in the Crystal Desert.
wolf - Available in the Northern Shiverpeaks.
I've heard rumors of Spiders but I have no idea where.

And wolves are available in pre-searing too (just not snow wolves).
And there are Striders and Moa Birds (they look the same to me, might be like wolves and snow wolves).
Pevil Lihatuh
yeah striders and moas are the same. if you tame a strider when it levels to level 6 it will become a moa, then at level 10 becomes a strider again.

i got my bear pet at lvl 10 when i got to becons pearch. Go down way south into lommars pass and you will find one its 3/4 of the way to the next zone down their right near where the frost wyrms spawn in. Im sure if you did some ninja moves you could get their with just henchmen. I did it with some henchmen and 2 real people took us a couple of runs. Sometimes the bear spawns where you can't get to him easily so you have to retry but he always spawns as far as i can tell.
oh and the bear has a special attack called mauling i dont have enough points in beast mastery to see if he does any damage though. These bears however do not have break charm skill so its easy to charm em.
so far i havent seen a pet on fire island... so i think that may be it and i heard the spiders were not charmable.

Sadly enough, you can not tame spiders. I've tried it before. It says something like "Invalid Target" or "Not an Animal" or something like that.

Upon reading the rest of this thread, I see that Rasp has already covered all of that.
About the bear pets though, I have no idea...I only read this post hoping someone could answer. Looks like Draken has the best answer

Yeah, like the other guy said, the bears are just South of Beacon's Perch, the bad guys there are way harder than the surrounding area though, took me a bit of luck to reach and charm my bear.
Also, anyone else find the rabbit in pre-searing? I tried to tame it, but it "wasn't an animal"

Seems everyone wants a bear. *yawn* I love my giant kamakazi chicken. I call him Pollo Loco.

Also you can charm certain spiders. The black widows and elder black widows in Underworld are charmable.

I got my bear in Lomar's Pass south of Beacon's Pearch with only taking henchmen. Basically, I loaded up a full team of henchmen and simply ran through the first group of mobs on the right. Most of the henchmen stay back to fight (and subsequently die) but I'm left alone. From there, I carefully keep all red dots out of the aggro circle while working my way south. You'll get to a valley with ice imps running up and down. Wait for them to hit the northern end and start heading south. Now somewhere in this valley is a black bear. Hold Alt to find it easier. I've seen the bear at both the north end and southern end of this valley, so it's a bit of luck if you can get to it without running into the imp scout patrol. Also, if you try to dodge the patrol by heading to the right side, you may be assaulted by a giant worm that causes knockdown when arising. It took me five or six tries to get it right, but it can be done.

In pre-searing, find a warrior who has a hammer with a knockdown skill. Take along a Necromancer, Mesmer or any spell-caster who can drain energy. When taken on by a team, if the others are able to knock the bear down and lower it's energy pool without killing it, and you use good timing when casting the charm animal spell, it should work.
It requires a party of helpers.
In post-searing, there are brown bears with the friendly green circles under them that are easily tameable just like any other standard pet. However, from what I understand they do not have the Brutal Mauling skill of the pre-searing black bears.

YOU FOOLS!!!! all you have to do is get to dragnars forge and they are everywhere, i kill them in like 3 hits, annoying really. pretty much to just make a bigcircle around the world map and end up back at the bottom of shiver peaks. but oyu have to be well into level 20, in fact im not sure what level im at, have to be 30 or so, lost count after a while, the skills points really arent to useful
Makkert
I saw a screenshot of someone that HAD tamed a spider: a black widow! i can confirm the spider story.
the lizard i just saw just outside the Ammoon Oasis town.
What I want to know: i have a pet at level 16. if I drop it, and get a new pet, must I start over from level 5 again with that pet? or does it take the level of my old pet?

its level 5, but my friend got his lizard form 5-20 in like 5 missions, its went form level 5-8 after like 3 monsters
FireMountain
I'd love to have one of those moss spiders, they are tough as heck and only at level 2!
When I get a pet will they be at my skill level?
