WoW Advertising on Guildwars wiki (unsetlling)
Omega Precept
Does any one else find it odd that when you go to guildwars wiki advertisements for world of warcraft often come up. I find this a conflict of interests and a little unsettling. I understand that wikia game advertising is most effective by marketing like products but in all honesty I think it is a little ridiculous.

on the offical wiki or the first one? I havent seen any advertising on the offical one at all. I wouldn't say much people pay attention to them anyway. like you said they are conflicting interests (partly true) which means we probably wouldn't care about it.

They need money to keep the servers up, they know who is accessing that website (for obvious reasons) so it is easy to target a product at a specific audience and those companies, Blizzard included, are willing to pay. So doesn't really bother me.

Unsettling? I really, really hope you aren't losing sleep over it. Otherwise, that's kinda sad.

Why does it matter? Most people don't even notice the ads anyway..

I dont see ads anyway xD
But OT, I dont think I'd notice them O.o Especially if I'm looking up something(Which is why I'm on the wiki in the first place O.O). They also advertise a ton of other mmo's...If it keeps the servers running, let them be

No, I'm pretty sure I go to the GW wikis because I play Guild Wars. Advertising there for WoW will probably affect me as much as any other advertisement might - not that much.

Money > nobility, honor, competition, realism, etc.
As long as they're paying, they're golden. But really, are we going to lose GW players to WoW because of an advertisement? Not likely. We'd have to be blind anyway to not realize that we're the smaller game/community.

It will in all likelihood be generic MMO ads, but since WoW is basically the biggest, it has more ads for it.
Whatever, if you're upset by an ad, find better things to do in life.

This is no new phenomenon, game sites often advertise for competing games or providers of questionable services. If it becomes a moral dilemma for you or anyone then I suggest contacting their administrators and requesting a change. You probably won't get one though.
