Okay, a few points here.

1. The Guild Wars Trillogy + Guild Wars: Eye of The North costs ~$70 US when bought from amazon - not $300.
2. Monking is one of the hardest things to do in PvP. I suggest you start with a midliner such as an Elementalist.
3. Starting out in PvP is pretty much suicide, and a guarantee you'll get frustrated at the game real quick. Not only will you not have skills unless you buy the unlock packs from the online store, you will also not know how to use the ones you do have. Not to mention the fact that people in PvP aren't always that nice.
4. PvE will allow you to get a feel for the game, unlock skills, become more familiar with professions and so on.

But basically, yes. If you want to eventually succeed at PvP, you will need the three campaigns and the expansion pack.

After a quick google, Gamehead has the trilogy for $86 AUS, and EotN seems to be $26.25 with a current discount. I'd expect the store prices to be around $100 AUS tops for the Trilogy, and $30-35 tops for EotN.

This is all guesswork though, based on two randomly googled australian game sites.

I belive there were 2 multiple pakcs for Guild Wars, one was the Trilogy, and one was the Complete Collection. Considering you can buy the Complete Collection for about $100 NZ, i would expect similiar or less in Australian dollars. As Haxor said, start with PvE, itll let you learn the game and become more familiar with the game and unlock skills. You should be fine with just one of the campaigns for a while, but its a much better deal to buy the collection.
