Alright I was wondering if a few questions could be answered by some of you.
For starters, is this game based more for parties or solo play? (I'm looking to be able to party a lot, keep the game fun and make new people y'know?)
Is this game active? (by that I mean would i be traveling long semi-long distances without seeing a single person?)
Would there even be a point to buying this game? Or should I wait for GW2 (by appearance coming out mid-early '09, even though there aren't any specific release dates yet.)
Is the community friendly?
Big guild vs guild battles?
I guess that would be it, I'm just trying to make sure what I'm buying is worth the while. If you do respond, thanks a lot for your time!

Should I?

1. Lots of both. It's all up to you. Once you join a guild or big alliance, it's up to you whether you want to Hero/hench something or work with a group for elite areas like Urgoz, Deep, Fow, UW, DoA, dungeons, etc...
2. Active, yes, as long as you're in a good guild/alliance, because that's who you will be doing most of your grouping with.
3. Buy GW for now because there's definitely plenty to do and as far as we know GW2 will be out sometime 2030 XD. Very little info on GW2 thus far.
4. Honestly like most mmo's, there are some people who are nice, a lot of people who are dicks, some who just like to show off non-stop, but for the most part, people in your guild and such should be nice to you, if not, leave .
5. GVG is 8v8. If you consider that big or not I don't know but that's how each GVG match is organized.
All in all, GW is worth it, especially since you can get the games at such a low price now. It's definitely worth checking out if you're into good MMO's without having to pay monthly fees for anything.

For starters, is this game based more for parties or solo play? -original intent was for parties, but now pve has a lot of solo play. you always have the option to team up but a lot of players dont do that so much anymore
Is this game active? -popularity has waned in the past 2 years but theres still lots of players. some areas will have multiple districts with a couple hundred players, but a lot of zones are fairly empty, especially in prophecies and factions
Would there even be a point to buying this game? Or should I wait for GW2
-yeah its a fun game, which is the point of buying any game...right? plus you can transfer achievements from GW to GW2 when it comes out
Is the community friendly? -ill let others answer this lol
Big guild vs guild battles? -not sure what you mean by this. a guild battle is 8v8. guilds hold 100 members with 10 guilds in an alliance; 1000 member cap per alliance

It depends upon your definition of "solo". GW is based more for parties, but the party can consist of just you, Heroes (customizable NPCs), and Henchmen (non-customizable NPCs). So in a sense, you can be "solo" in that there are no other humans. There are builds and areas where you can play truly solo - just you alone. But mostly it is designed to be played with a "party" which can consist of all humans or a mix of humans, heroes, and henchmen.
Unlike many other MMORPGs (such as WoW,etc.), GW is all "instanced". If your not familiar with the term (WoW dungeons are instances I think), it means that when ever you are out questing/exploring, the only players in the area will be your own party. You won't meet up with other players when you are outside of a town or outpost.
The game is quite cheap nowadays and will give you lots to do until GW2 comes out (and even after that.)
Like any on-line game, the friendliness varies depending upon who you are talking to. There is the usual assortment of "leet" jackasses, but also lots of friendly, helpful people.
The largest GvG battle is 12v12 I think. Not what would normally be called "big"
