Having got stuck on Prophecies in Thirsty River, (i've tried various walkthroughs, including the Wiki one, and still can't finish any of the missions there), so went to but one of the other chapters to have a chance at some new missions.
Having read one of the other articles on this site, I was buying Nighfall as it sounded more geared up for PvsE, which is what I play, but they also had the expansion pack Eye of the North on offer, so I now have both coming in the post.
My question is, any opinions on which one I should do first, or should I install them both together and just switch between the two.
Also, do I use my existing character or should/must I create a new one?
Which Chapter next?

if you want to get anywhere in gw you need all games xD well atleast if you want to run a variaty of builds
you don't need to create a new chara just add the keys to your existing account
and when you are in Lions Arch a message will appear wich tells you who to talk to to access cantha, elona, eye of the north^^
wich one you install first is up to you ^^ you will end up installing both sometime anyway so it doesnt really matter
maybe check : http://www.pvxwiki.com for some builds and look from wich campaign you need the skills and get em ^^

You cant finish any of the missions in the desert? You can't even finish dunes of despair which is one of the simplest missions ever? You might want to quit playing because most of the missions in the other chapters are way harder than the crystal desert. Maybe if you got some heroes it would be easier but I doubt it since you probably don't have any elites.

I am of the believe that GW has a strange learning curves. You can get by the early game doing mostly damage and not really getting into the meat of the game: Conditions, hexes and interrupts. Sometime around the desert, it becomes really necessary to change your game. Thirsty river is such a mission. If you cannot interrupt the monk you will not finish that mission. Please let me know if you need help. Once you develop something that works for you, you will have an AHA! moment. From there on, whenever you fail at a mission or die, you will blame yourself( I did not pull them apart, I went in too fast, I did not interrupt, etc.).
Add me to your friend's list and hopefully I will be able to assist you::

You talk to Figo on the docks in Lion's Arch to send your character to Nightfall where you can pick up some heroes. EotN will also give you heroes.
Heroes can make things easier, because they are much better than henchmen, but your missions will still require that you think them through to succeed. I'm not bashing you, just explaining that we all needed to repeat missions until we got them right.
Three years ago, I repeated Dunes 6 times with various PuGs (no heroes then), before I managed to get it finished without the bonus. And I still had to return for the bonus and again to explore for my cartography title.
Message is: DON'T give up.

Now to answer your question. I would usually reccomend EOTN, but (no offence) if you can't get through the desert, you probably won't be able to do the hard parts of EOTN. So I'd stick with Nightfall
Cheers!

To OP, if you can get your mitts on some heroes, it'll make life so much easier, the henchies seem to be complete muppets for the most part. Or join a good guild then do with real people. You could do it with random people you meet (some of my worst experiences on GW's came from doing that tho, some really horrible little cretins out there). With a decent guild, if you ask in alliance chat you'll prolly get some seasoned players who will make the missions a breeze (or you could take some of the other posters up on their offers and pm)

If you get any campaign/expansion, you add the key then your current character can jump around between campaigns whenever you want.

Thanks everyone for all your help. I may well contact some of you in game, or install one of the other games to get some heroes.
