In a forward looking 2009 article, IGN completely overlooks anything for Guild Wars 2. They do mention Aion (for some NCSoft representation) and Blizzard's untitled secret MMO though, which might not be coming out until 2010-11.

Sigh.

The fact that it isn't on their radars at all! It seems like every other known MMO in development was mentioned.

Vaporware or not, a release in 2009 was not realistic at any given time.
Beta in 2010, release in 2011 sounds more realistic.

No release at all is possible, but I don't really believe in the DNF-theory.

Anet doesn't consider GW1 a MMO. Maybe they don't want GW2 considered an MMO.

Is that after D3 and SC2?? seems Blizzard have a bit of a blockage upcoming as they done want each taking away customers from the others.

I personally like the nothing being said about GW2 until its almost ready for release. They only need the publicity in the couple of months before across all the mags.

GW2 wassn't mention because of various reasons:

1) Diablo 3 and Blizzard's "unknown MMO" take the cake. Anyone denying this clearly has blind faith in Guild Wars and ANET.
2) Aion is a fairly recent buzz, correct me if I'm wrong, compared to GW2. It looks pretty and flashy.

and this next one is a doozy guys...

3) Anet has released jack SQUAT about GW2 other than some backstory and title logo. Aion has screens and photos, D3 has a huge teaser video, and a "unknown blizzard MMO" is enough teaser as it is. Hell, if the staff of Anet haddn't confirmed GW2 of being real, this could all possibly be some elaborate thrown together history and lore, with a photoshopped title logo!

Anet is getting JUST what they ordered. If they don't market it, no one will care. period. At this rate, a majority of it's fan base has lost hope in GW2, or has at least lost most interest at it, and it certainly hassn't generated buzzworthy news.

Trust me, by the time GW2 comes out, a lot of people who have played GW won't care, and it'll be so completely overshadowed by other games, that it won't generate any new fans.

Please, tell me I'm wrong.

IGN misses GW2 (2009) - reason: GW2 is not a 2009 game period.

Almost no major mmo/gaming sites acknowledge the existance of GW2 as an incoming game. It doesn't exist. Gamers who don't know much of GW1 and who may be dreaming of a game like GW2 have no way to get They copied some short informations and posted back when GW2 was announced, but then no new real info and press releases, so it's almost as it never existed.

Uhm. Aion has a decent beta (200k in a week, if I remember or something around that), it's a good game already. But yeah, it had a lot of screens, concept arts...

About Diablo 3 - you do know that the day it was announced, they had screenshots, concept arts, video trailer, GAMEPLAY VIDEOS, already announced 3 of 5 classes and showed working and awesome skills, explained the rune system...

And here we are, not knowing even the basics, like what's the level limit in GW 2.

Two of five classes - the third came at Blizzcon later in the year. But still, yes, they had a lot more to show us. Blizzard's always worked that way from what I can remember.

It doesn't exist specifically for that reason. Anet doesn't talk about anything until its almost released.

Until then the media might as well focus on something that has regular news updates like Champions Online/Star Trek Online, DC Universe, Diablo 3 and as usual WoW.

Ok, you're wrong.

Look at the enormous hubbub about D3. This is a series whose last installment was released in 2001, yet eight years later people are salivating to get back into it. Yet, ANet's delay of GW2 for two or three years after their last major release is somehow far, far too long for anyone to even remember or care about it? Bull.

If it turns out to be a good game, people will play it. If it turns out to be a trash game, people won't play it. It's as simple as that; judging a game's worth or how well it will do based on how long it takes for it to come out is absurd when you look at the hot new sequels that have come out in the past year, and will come out next year. Hullo Starcraft 2?

The sole reason they announced GW2 in the first place was because they needed to explain to us why we wouldn't be getting any more chapters or expansions. What would you have preferred them do, "Hey guys, we're not making any more expansions, because...uh...we don't want to. Kbai." As much as I dislike the information blackout, it's far better than not knowing why the hell ANet isn't making any more real content for GW1, even if that meant that they had to announce GW2 way before they were really ready to.

Agreed Skyy_High. Another great example, Fallout 3.

Don't freakin' judge GW2 as a "failure" before it even comes out. Plenty of games with lots of hype have been recieved relatively poorly once they were released (AoC, GtA4). Hype is not important at this stage.
GW2 was annoucned really early, that is why they have no info out yet. Diablo 3 was in development for like 5 years before they even announced it, thus why Blizzard released a video. The ONLY reason GW2 was announced so early is because A.net had to give us an excuse as to why they aren't following the "one expansion or major update every 6 months" thing anymore. Imagine if a.net was working on GW 2 now and HADN'T told us what is going on. All the "OMG GW is dying" crap would be even MORE intense.

AoC was received very well. It's just that when people learned that good game ends at 20, the truth jumped with claws and nails.

Also, GTA4 is good. I've heard so, I tried to play it on my cousin's 360 but it was just too weird, not on a keyboard and mouse.

Diablo 3 was in development for 4 years. But it's because Blizzard had WoW, and still was updating Diablo 2 (1.10 and 1.11 for example).

Good you have brought up the 6 months thing. Just proves how reliable A.Net is.

The "OMG GW IS DYING" thing is pretty easy to solve - get a working Community Manager, Skill Balancer (I've heard you have 100 employees?) and listen to players. Release good updates (this month is really week - one semi-nerf of an OP skill, but all other stupidities are left buffed.

Then people wouldn't cry as much as now.

Anet decides to have an underdog position in the MMO scene. What is NOT Massive, Multiplayer and Online about GW. Last time I checked, there was over 50K people online simutaniously, pretty much categorizing it as a MMO...

It could be vaporware, knowing Anet they're prolly still lieing on some sunny beach around the Carribean, but it only comes to worsen them.

How are they going to let ANYONE know GW2 is comming? Their OWN community barely knows what is going on, and by god, they don't even know the YEAR of the release of the upcomming game.

They are making the same mistake alot of other games, AND movies have made over the past year. This: "Our game will be the BEST out there, so it will sell itself, no need for well-planned marketing set-up" doesn't work anymore. Or atleast it's taking a huge unnecesary risk.

Can't wait for the: "hear is gw2 guiys" anno 2010, with not even a person shrugging, cuz everyone is already playing a different MMO, and had no clue GW2 was comming.

Really, Just hope for the best , they will release information when they want to. They don't have to say anything besides its a total different game to be honest. You don't even have to play gw1 if you don't like it ,no ones forcing you to get titles in gw1 so u can hav such a huge impact on the new game so why bother. Have fun if you still do while playin this , whilst you wait patiently for the new one

Don't be ridiculous.

Do you really have to be lead along for two years receiving little breadcrumbs of information? Is six months of marketing before a game's release not enough time to make the incredibly difficult decision of whether to drop $50?

I'm not sure what 1800's wagon train you're living on, but the rest of us live in an age where information travels insanely fast. You don't think that if D3 got released with only one month of marketing that it would sell just as well as with a year of little promo videos? It would.

Building anticipation is all well and good, but people act like nobody's going to buy a video game without two years of foreplay.

Just because Anet isn't marketing the game now doesn't mean they don't have a marketing plan.

Blizzard is a very popular name the WORLD over. Diablo and Starcraft may be old, but they are very established fans. Diablo was kept up with D2 and the expansions. Starcraft was kept up by online tournaments (my nephew participated in a few and won money).

Even the new generation who may not be familiar with the Diablo or Starcraft series will quickly be lured in by the Blizzard name and its' advertising monster.

Anet doesn't have this, which is why there is much speculation about why they haven't started putting the word out about GW2 now, in order to make an attempt at catching up to Blizzard. Because monthly fee or not, I guarantee you that Blizzard fans will not be playing WoW, D3, SC2, and the odd man GW2 on the shelf next to them.

Face it, the huge shift in the game over time and most importantly the shift to GW2 is at least in part aimed at bringing in WoW players who may enjoy grind and other (much more interesting) aspects of WoW.

i wouldnt even compare diablo2 to guild wars seriously...i mean d2 is like 8 years old..and it was one of the best selling rpgs ever..and when diablo3 was announced it became the #18 game most sold for the pc..even 8 years after. And before the massive banning..there was around 300k people playing..i dont even know if we even have that in gw, since i see alot of people with 8 accounts...and gaile with like 20+ lol...its like comparing a blue whale with a mosquito with the flu.

People need to stop comparing A.net to the company that made 3 of the top 10 best selling computer games of ALL TIME! A.net isn't striving to be a "WoW killer." There is no point. They are never going to catch up to Blizzard. Ever. Even if GW2 destroys WoW in the MMO market, Blizzard will still have more money after cornering the RTS market with SC2. There is no need to "catch up" with Blizzard. Just because A.net won't make as much money as Blizzard doesn't make them a failure. It is still highly successful in its own right, just not as much.

Diablo 2 is 8 years old, but the patches bring new life to the game.

Sure, so people detest 1.10 or 1.11. But also a lot of people didn't like 1.09 or 1.08 (oh, those bugged items on CBnet... worth more than Enigma in Dusk...), yet people still have returned to Diablo 2.

One of the reasons for that is that Diablo 2 has an amazingly great PvE and, when you count out the need to get better items, balanced PvP. For the latter, you can just join a private server with 99 level at start and every item you want. This way, it's only skill and ability to create a good character.

Of course they can't catch up to Blizzard. But they don't even try. It's like running in a marathon and standing still in the middle of route, just because someone has already won the race years ago.

You do know that if you want to get some money from people (because they will have to choose - GW 2 or D3 - and I know what will be my choice), you have to work even harder than Blizzard. Staying silent for 2 years worked in the 90's, where there were not many games on the market, so you didn't have to worry about the competition.

I suspect that there isn't going to be a Guild Wars 2. GW1's formula of releasing a new chapter every 6 months wasn't panning out to be cost effective and Arenanet needed a way to bail out of the franchise without upsetting users. I believe their solution was to announce that they would be halting any further chapters so they could work on GW2 as a distraction while Arenanet slowly phases the GW franchise out.

If you listen to the NCSoft investor conference call, you will hear them (near the end) answer the analyst's question about when GW2 will be released. They "certainly hope to ... have something out by that time" [referring to holiday 2009].

If the game was going to be released in summer, there would be some beta information.

Or screenshots of alpha. Or teaser. Or ANYTHING. Do they even have an official Guild Wars 2 webpage? No.

Meanwhile, Aion has a release date (before November 2009, most likely summer, so GW2 will be AFTER that), official websites (for each continent one page), forums about the game, official screenshots and wallpapers...
