Make sure you have admin rights on the PC you're playing on.

Try going to Start-> Run and the type:
C:\Program Files\Guildwars\gw.exe -update
while logged in as an administrator. Contrary to popular belief, guildwars normally does update with a normal account, but sometimes problems occur. Try temporarily disabling any anti-virus, anti-spyware or other security apps until the insall is complete, and remember to switch them back on afterwards...

I'm having the same problem as you are Louis and it just started today after I ran the updated that came out today. Caballo I tried everything you suggested and none of it help the problem. This is the first time EVER I've had a problem with GW. I wonder if one of the files in the update is corrupt or something.

Run your virus scanner as well, just to make sure that isn't an issue.

try the repair command if not that then you may need to replace your gw.dat file

Thank you Elder, I put my GW disc in and chose the repair feature on the disc and I'm playing again. Thanks again to everyone how offer help. Woot off to play GW.

Gw.tmp could be as big as gw.exe, so you may need to make sure you have enough free space on your hard drive (4 gig or so). But, then again, since the -repair worked, maybe not.
