Power failure during Vista SP1 update ><

You know that's bad, right?

My son's PC that I built him for Christmas. Update did its usual thing and started to install SP1, then *phut* - wife puts on kettle, microwave and fan heater and pops the mcb for the sockets.

On reboot, no joy. Get a list of files flying past that vista seems to be checking, then it hangs with a !! 0xc0000034 !! when it gets to quartz.dll (a component of WMP, I believe.)

Nothing I can do seems to have any effect - I've booted from the Vista DVD and tried the various options from the recovery console.

Any ideas? I found this thread on TechNet that's sorta relevant: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/...-fb58c5da5ad0/ but it's not amazingly helpful.

Oh, Vista64 by the way. E7200 on an eVGA 680i with 4GB of Ballistix and a 8800GTX - irrelevant, but meh...

[edit]attempting to boot from the HDD now results in Stop Code 0x00000071 SESSION5_INITIALIZATION_FAILED.

Try booting again from the Vista DVD, but this time, let it go past the "Repair using Recovery Console".

After Setup finds the current Vista installation, you should have the option to "Repair current installation" (or words to that effect). Run the Repair - everything should be back to normal afterwords, except you'll need to do the SP1 upgrade again.

Vista has some great repair features from the DVD.

quartz.dll is for the analog clock.

Bah - the internets lied to me

Bedtime now, will give it another go in the morning. I have tried what Quaker suggested - there's a progress bar that whizzes along constantly saying "completing repair" - or something similar - but it gets nowhere.

Maybe I need to be patient and leave it for an hour or so? I suspect otherwise

Here's the sequence. After Startup repair does its thing, I get:
It asks me if I would like to send information to MS, then it asks me if I want to send more information to MS.

Then we get to the various repair options:Startup repair is what just failed. Windows complete PC restore is for people with backups. Windows memory diagnostic tool is for people with crap memory. Command prompt is for people who like getting their hands dirty (I've had a delve around to see if deleting a few quartz.dlls will help - nope.)

So, I'm pretty much stuck with System Restore. The only restore point I have (this is a new build, remember) is this:
It's doing its thing right now. We've been through "initializing" and "restoring files" and now we're up to "Finalizing file restore..." - it sits on that stage for a looooong time. Is it supposed to take a long time at this stage or is it an indication that it's hung?

Well, I've never done a restore in Vista, but it will probably sit there for a good little while. I'd just sit and let it run. If it goes overnight and still hasn't made any progress, then it's hung. Otherwise it's just really, really slow.

Imo anyway.

You could just remove the drive and pop it into your computer. Copy the data she'd want to keep over to your drive, then pop it back in her computer, format and reinstall Vista and do SP1 right away.

Ah, now there's something I hadn't considered.

The Repair usually takes about the same amount of time it takes to install Vista originally.

Ah, a week then.

Just started the painful re-install process. I forgot Vista makes the process more painless than before - everything will still be in Windows.old, duh
