Did I go too far too early?
Atheron
I decided to continue the story line after getting a pet and such (I'm now level 4). The Charr have broken down the wall and I'm in the destroyed Ascalon. I'm sure there was much more I should have done to my character before I committed to this. Should I go forward or start over again?
zelgadissan
Much more, no. More, yes.
Honestly as long you got the ranger skills and a res signet, you'll be just fine.

First of all, that's what she said.
Secondly, no, you're fine, you can keep moving with the story no problem. You didn't really miss anything important. Just keep following the quests and you can't go wrong.

maybe you missed some quests that give you some more skills for you primary or secondary profession. You could start again lvl 4 isn't that far anyway.
Vesio
like others said the only thing you really missed was some extra quests. There are actually very few things that are required of you in pre, i think you can manage to get to post in 5-10 quests. so you didn't miss anything vital. unless of course you're a someone who must complete everything. Also, the quests that give you skills are not required, except for the first primary profession quest and the one for your secondary. its just nice to get skills for free rather than paying for them.

Thanks, everyone. I appreciate the help!

As long as your not going for LDoA, then your fine.. no biggie.

Pre-Searing is a good experience for your first prophecies character but completely a waste of time if you had experienced it once before.

Just make another character to keep in pre if you ever want to return. w/r for best results.

Nooo noo noo.
OK at lvl 4 you are going to find that the missions are harder and your ability to do damage far less effective.
If you are starting out in pre I would follow the Legendary Defender of Ascalon title progression as stated on the WIKI. www.wiki.guildwars.com This is your friend.
I would suggest lvl 8 for leaving presearing. You can do charr at the gate quest over and over again to get to lvl 8 in about 6 hours. The difference of lvl 8 and lvl 4 is HUGE. 20 attribute points HUGE. Just remember not to take the rewards for the quest. Have the prince kill off 3 of the charr and then map back to ascalon before they kill the 4th one. This will save you LOTS of time running up and down the stupid stairs.
This is what I do with all of my toons that I start in prophecies.
Also upgrade your armor in ascalon. This might help if you do not want to restart your toon.

Just keep going, nothing is permanently missed out, except the Legendary Defender of Ascalon title. For that title, people tend to dedicate an entire character anyway (very extreme/hard/boring/you name it -to get).
Raven Wing
If you are level 4-6 I recommend you to go out alone and kill the monsters in old ascalon (the area outside burned ascalon). You might die a few times but each monster gives good xp and you will gain a few levels fast.
Iarumas Regnar
I get to level 20 before I even consider leaving presearing

if you're ever wondering if you're somewhere to soon or too late you can use the henchmen levels as an approximate value of where your level should be. I believe that henchmen are level three in postsear ascalon.
also, upgraded armor is a good idea, but i'd say only necessary on warriors as you'll be right up in the thick of things. As a caster you can easy make it to Lions Arch or even into the jungle before you really NEED to upgrade (by this time you're taking A LOT of damage from relatively small mobs). Again you can use the crafters that have been placed in various places you'll get to as to what armor is recommended for the area.
