I've been very curious as to how everyone gets the titles "Desert Nomad" "Jungle Guide", and such.

You get them by making posts , you gain a different Title for so many posts 1-49 ,50-99 100-149 that's not exact but that's the idea

Also some people (like moderators and paying elite members) have custom titles.

Yeah, not like post count means anything anways. I do like the custom titles though.

Custom titles are reserved for staff members, former staff members and rare exceptions.

You can however add an avatar (the picture under the user names), by going here.
The maximum size is 100x100 pixels or 19.5 KB (whichever is smaller).
