Alright, something needs to be done.

Why do they even do these "bad language" bans or suspensions? I mean there's a chat filter BUILT IN... if somebody doesn't want to hear bad language or takes it offensively, they should be using it! Also we need a small about page for each member... maybe people could stick in what their name means or some other info. Not that it would be checked but maybe there's one good person out there who doesn't feed noobs.

I probably overlooked this aspect of the thread (even after just re-reading it right now), but where were there any suggestions, rather than complaints? ty for the help.

Many times when the abuse starts in game its completely uncalled for.
This logic amazes me, theres a filter so i can swear as much as i want, i can spam mini/pet sounds all i want because you can just leave the district. Seriously people, do you find that acceptable behaviour?

GW has a languauge filter right? It used to....still does right? Took me several weeks and a guildmate to allow me to curse freely.
If it is still in place then bad language should be removed from any kind of reporting option/punishment. If you do not want bad language then turn on your filter. If you have your filter off then tough S%$t deal with it and do not cry if you see any number of curse words.
If some child is spacing out the vulgar words screenshot him and send to support if it offends you that much. Then and only then should a ban be enforced and in those screenshot cases bans should be for 2 weeks or longer.
Set a date and make it a one time selection that you HAVE to select prior to logging into the game with the warning about bypassing the filter and the ban involved if you bypass it. Then ban as outlined above.
Being Retired Navy there is nothing you can say to me, in any combination, that I have not already heard. I like my filter OFF! Cuss away! Too bad it cannot be applied to char names. I would love to have a char called:
F@&%*#G Ex Squid
Anet probably gets way to many reports as it is, sounds like it anyway. Problem is that it only takes one prude to sue the company for some idiotic thing. If everyone stood around in LA and recited the pledge of allegience on July 4th ANET would have a freaking lawsuit on their hands.

Cluebag
Well, since the NCSoft bots are the ones responsible for handing out bans, and given that report abusers apparently don't get in trouble for randomly reporting any name, offensive or otherwise, then here's the next test to get Anet to actually pay attention to what is happening:
Next gvg tournament, log in on underused accounts (ones you wouldn't want to get a reprisal ban on, as if that actually would happen) and report any/all the top gvg'ers names as offensive. Do it like the day before or the day of the tournament, when all the staff has gone home for the weekend, to demonstrate the ineffectiveness of the appeal system with respect to overturning bs bans in a timely manner.
Could you imagine that? Oh boo hoo rawr person. Your name, John Smith, was offensive, qq less, enjoy your ban, go outside and enjoy the sun, it's only 72 hours, blabla.
If the pride and joy of GW (gvg) gets affected by this well intentioned by woefully inadequate report system, you can bet your sweet ass Anet would take action to unf*ck it.

There is a whole forum dedicated to the exercise of players suggesting ideas amongst themselves. Unfortunately it has become painfully obviously that even community conscious and posts from well respected individuals (Ensign) are nothing more than an exercise in futility. Unless I know that what I have to say would be given consideration I hardly have the desire to detail my suggestions. Please do not be under the misconception that addressing a system this large and problematic could be handled in a couple of paragraphs.

I love how people justify their actions based of the there's a preventive measure in place that doesn't work 100% effectivly. The filter doesn't always filter out offensive words and also people find ways to get around it.

If you see someone say "Character name" #### off and die, that makes it less offensive?
Mainly though, it is the people who purposely mis type/spell words to get around the filter that get the bad language bans from what Ive seen.
Really if they cant control themselves to stop typing a string of expletives, then there are bigger issues for them to address.

There is no correct or perfect solution. Anyone stuck in that idealism would be a failure at actually addressing any problem.
I've seen good ideas. Bits and pieces here and there. But I have never seen anything elaborate combining all of the pieces.
I could certainly combine everything I've seen together with my own ideas. Not to create a 'perfect' system, but a system that would generally be more efficient and generally considered better. This would take a day, maybe more, to do properly. The target audience for this is not the player base, its Anet/NCsoft themselves. I really do not want to go through that much work unless I know that it is for something. Additionally, if I was Anet, I would not want our actual considerations for changing this system to be discussed publicly; it would be a staff/support discussion only.
Maybe I'm just trying to call out Anet and say 'hey pay attention to me.' But, like many other players before me, I am nearing the end of my playing this game. I guess I'm looking for one last hurrah, one last long shot.

This is the thing, each person has their own levels of acceptance and what they consider "appropriate" and "funny" and why these threads will never ultimately go anywhere . The ones who disagree with a system will always be the ones that shout the loudest and longest.

So theres one built in, so what? I know an officer who has the name Emmerdale in his name that shows as Em#####le. Just because there is one doesnt give you anyone an excuse not to control themselves and respect the EULA.

I agree with you that it does not give someone an excuse to ignore EULA, but we all know no matter what anyone does, we will have people push the limits. But the filter tool is there time to use it, it could be made to help with the issue.
If children still manage to bypass filter, then screenshot them and they get banned for 2+ weeks as I suggested above. Screenshots are the key here proof positive that it is a EULA violation. Not an auto ban because some two year old reports you for some imagined infraction or for spite.
ANET will not be able to do this themselves, look at the whole bot issue. I reported over 100 bots (god I hate bots ). Did 10 bots a day took me all of 30 minutes. Today they are gone for the areas I reported on. ANET made it easy to report we reported them and bots went away. Does it stop the bots for trying other things, no, it is a ongoing battle, but we make it better if you take a little time to assist in fixing it, if you see them report them. We all have to willing to help manage our "community" or it will never get corrected.
Perhaps the easiest and maybe only way ANET could bypass this issue themselves is to take away the ability to name your own character. Let the QQ-a-thon begin...
Kook~NBK~
1. If some little jerk TELLS you that they're reporting you for no good reason, report THEM for harrassment.
2. EULA >>> chat filter. Always has, always will. But this has nothing to do with the apparent problem of people getting their accounts suspended for names that wouldn't offend a saint.
3. (This is the big one!) Since A-Net has found in their hearts to allow people to reserve their character names in GW2 (YAY!), this problem has a larger & longer lasting impact than meets the eye. Imagine this: A selfish little weasel decides that they want your character's name. Now, they may or may not be able to use that name on a GW1 Character, but how absolutely sh***y would it be if they snagged it when (IF) GW2 is released?
I sure would like to hear some comments about this mess from the powers that be!

What Now
This is why I don't HA anymore, half my team got banned after some sore losers reported us all. Why bother. Remove /report or at least make it useful for dealing with botters and leechers instead of real players. Fail system is fail I suppose.

So a 2d Java game made for 12 year olds has more balls than Anet. GG.

now if there was only a CR person whose job it was to take player's legitimate concerns to the decision makers, to make this a better game for all............

question for those who know:
What happens when Mr. PMA's 72 hours ban is over? Does he have to delete the toon named Mr. PMA? Or can he go back to playing the toon until someone else reports it?

This is getting kinda extreme. I used to think all the QQers were just that, but now I'm starting to think A.net isn't doing a good job checking their bans.

I'd have to agree with a lot of what people have already said, the QQers here are really justified for once.
That bimmer guy who got 72 hr ban after his friend reported him twice within an hour leads to the question as to whether anet has changed the amount required for the auto ban?
So to our silent CR team whats the deal with this?

Our support team has done some testing on the claims here, and research on the players affected. What our team has found is that they aren't necessarily being banned for inappropriate names, but for other infractions.

/report function is doing more good than harm imo. If you are stupid enough to start an internet fight with someone else, you probably deserve what's coming your way.
Unfortunately a lot of people hide behind their desks and just stir trouble and the people who respond just add fuel to the fire. Let the dumbasses be and they won't have anything else to go on.
It'd be a lot easier to ignore them rather than to respond to some maybe 13 year old who starts an internet fight with someone else.

I could have sworn I closed this thread after my last post. As I said previously, anyone who has a concern with their ban needs to take the matter up with Support.
Thanks for the reply Regina.
