I have searched through the forums and i still did not find my answer. If there is a thread out there that i missed that does have my answer please let me know. I want to know what you think is the most versatile class in GW. Basically, what class do you think could do pve missions with h/h, then go over to elite areas with PUGs, then if they really feel up to it some pvp.

Thanks in advance for your opinions.

Basically your asking what class to play? Try a couple. Any class can H/H almost any area, so I won't bother talking about that.

As for the most versatile across all game types, probably monk, ranger. mesmer or necro. Monks are needed in 80% of all team builds. Rangers are important in PVP, can BP, and can run cryway in a pinch. Mesmers are excellent cryers, can play water snare or various caster hate builds in pvp, and have nice damage against the stupid AI. Necros like rangers have a mixed bad of tricks. They have started to see more use due to lingering curse for pvp, and again have 4 energy regen so they can cry.

Outside of the 6 core classes, not much is used everywhere. Warriors suffer from low regen making them unable to cry. They can run obby tank builds though. Ele's see limited use in GVG (I'm a bit out of the meta, so I could be wrong about that).

Anything can roll though PvE. Play what you want.

If you want to PuG in elite missions (i.e, use stupid gimmicks that will eventually lead to brain deterioration), then go Mesmer for [[Cry of Pain] or something. If you want to be good at GW then you'll play a physical (W, A, D, P, R), necro, or monk, though if you're not bothered by being absolutely 100% efficient then you'll find a slot no matter what you are.

PvP is best left to PvP characters, though Wars and Monks fit into pretty much every serious PvP team.

Can one class do it all?

No. Necro is the closest because of their energy - Elementalist second. But that's only in the case of Casters.

But your real question is which to do.

Try anything that looks interesting. For Normal Mode PvE, anything would do. PuGs do get picky about professions because they want to do things "by the book" - i.e., the most basic team build set up that doesn't use gimmicks like cryway. But because of those gimmicks, any profession can do anything. Whether you h/h or PuG doesn't matter.

Also, if you find a good guild that does stuff together, than you're golden and doesn't matter what profession you choose.

In short, choose the profession you like to play, not the "best."

Necro is the most versatile caster with Elementalist a close second.

Since you can be any secondary class any caster can be any other class of caster except for the inability to put skill points into that classes prime skill list.

Since Necro has easily renewable energy with soul reaping and Elementalist can have a very large energy pool they work the best.

Out of the two I fine necro more fun to play.

For the melee classes well they all have their good and bad points but on balance going warrior is seldom a bad choice.
They just have more skills than the other melee classes and you can always use them as a secondary class.

Rangers are my pet hate I love playing rangers in other games but I don't like the way the skill lists are made up.

Best caster Necro
Best Melee class Warrior
Most fun to play Mesmer

Of course that's just my personal choice

Ritualists can do easily everything but Elite Missions.. The truth about Ritualists is they're needed in Urgoz Warren, but that's it. You'll be very lucky if you find yourself from a FoW/UW/DoA team.. But otherwise Ritualist isn't a bad choice at all "to do everything" (22 maxed titles atm).. But I'd still suggest you play Necromancer or Elementalist, as you will want to join those FoW / UW runs later on..

With a beautiful energy pool, and the ability to do widespread unavoidable damage (liquid flame, fireball, mixed with mark of rogort = pain) or just some fun electric damage (doesnt everyone want to be able to summon lightning on a random person?!) or freeze them....nah leave out water, could do with a few more dmg spells and a few less hex spells.

And then when you go to DoA or other elite places, you could probably easily run the flavour of the month pug build. Like Cryer build fits in nicely with eles and their energy pool.

Don't like using eles in pvp though, monks have learnt to run from my thunderclaps area of effect so meh. Its ok for ab though, nuke shrine, capcapcapcap run like hell, repeat. just dont run into enemy .

IMHO, it's not quite a matter of what class to pick, rather how skilled the player is.

Good players can play almost everything with any class, be it H/H or with PuGs, so it's really up to you.

Try the ones you find more interesting and then choose the one you've most fun with. Predictable choices are the aforementioned Necromancer, Elementalist, Warrior.

Good luck!

Go necro: Dueo to their Soul Reaping primairy they make a very good class for kinda everything. h/h is easy, you can do Uwsc, you can do urgoz as bip and you can cry. If you are really aiming on doing elite area's here after, I still suggest mesmer, as they are the best cryers, and you can go VoR in DoA. Also necro and mesmer are mostly very succesfull at vanquishing and other things in HM as SS and casterhate are very wanted at those things. I'm a monk trough hart and veins, but you are bound to heal/prot mostly. RoJ is also a very good option now, but I'm waiting on Anet to make it scatter (I doubt for how long cry will remain the same though). With my monk, done DoA urgoz, Fow, uwsc and HM dungeons, including slavers. For most elite area teams (xept uwsc though RoJ could replace the necro, but not many people take you, and frog sc) you need a monk, so they can be very usefull.
Further I would just say to you; don't aim on making a character for elite area's, you'll be doing just some random things mostly anyways. Just make a proffesion you enjoy playing, then find a suitable elite area for that. Urgoz needs kinda anything. Also sins make good profs as perma's, but I really hate them, out of the deepest of my hart, in normal PvE.

Hope I helped

I agree with this. I play a ranger and have completed all the elite missons, have done all missions and vanqed in HM and have even been known to grab me toucher build and go AB.

Find a profession that u enjoy and learn how to use their skills effeciently. You can do it all with any toon.

Actually, i have 12 maxed on my rit (havnt done much with titles, but i have player him soo much) I have done FoW, Urgoz, and some DoA on my rit.... NON-Ursan *gasp* and just recently did vale with my rit in 14 minutes =P

So imo, Rits are the most versatile, they synergize reaaally epicly well with all other proffessions. 600/smite, Solo's, and have the highest DPS in the game non-Cryway (even then i still think its higher). Also plus that they have also prolly some of the best looking armor in the game.

Only thing i warn against, Rits are annoying to play, take some time to learn and not a lot of people want em cause they dont know their full potential. So, remember that.

P.s to the person who said warriors cant cry... try Lyssa's Aura and auspicious incantation. Works wonders.

I would suggest warrior or necro. But you should try out all the different classes. Make a PvP character and use skills in the Isle of the Nameless. You will find out what is best for you.

I do value all of the replies and i thank you. To make it more specific. If i were to have one character in GW who would i be. . I have 9 chars myself all lvl 20, but when i play pve and want to move to an elite area, i dont want to have to switch chars. i just want char that will give me the most out of GW.

warrior if u like to kill things
monk if u like to keep things alive

monk has better group flexibility imo...but it can be more boring to some ppl
wars r used slightly less, but still more than other classes...but the prob is generally there r too many wars out there

however, if u solo h/h everything
ur better off playin a sin or midline caster class

He's pretty much asking which class is a Jack of All Trades. That is, good at many things, great at none.
Hard to pick just one. Best way to tell is to visit PvX and see how many different builds each class has.

He's not exactly asking for a Jack of all Trades since that would mean the ability to take various roles in groups, just a profession adept at PvE and PvP.

I agree with snaek.
Warrior - Earth Shaker or constant SY! for PvE, don't need to say a thing for PvP.
Monk - Obviously.

For those saying:
Rit, I need a role you'd play in PvP besides flag runner..
Ele, let me direct you to a thread entitled "Elementalists in Hard Mode."
Necro, let's be honest, Soul Reaping goes downhill in real PvP.

Our views are coloured by our experiences thus we answer in the best way we can.

If there was one class that was clearly better than the others it would still come down to the player enjoying the experience.

Still comes down to do you like getting close up and dirty then its a melee class.
Warrior the classic tank
Dervish more like a warrior monk hybrid
Assassin fast moving hit and run merchant.

Like being the mage then the choice is more varied

Blowing things away with fire and lightning then its Elementalist.
Humiliating enemies by using their abilities against them then its Mesmer.
Wannabe vampire raising the dead poison disease life stealing its Necro
Smiting the undead while healing your friends its Monk.
Ritualist is another hybrid class with Spirits as allies effective healing and Lightning power.
Ditto Paragon an attempt to combine warrior with healer protector powers

Still it comes down to what you like.

I have seen all four games played right through to the end with all the classes by a guildie.
The elite areas may well be a different matter and some classes may well struggle.
