thinking of making one

I'm thinking of making a paragon. I love my ranger, and para's seem like the sameish but with more support.
So what I'm wondering is can they support a team AND do decent damage?

I am in the almost exact same position you are in. Ranger is my main, and I wanted something that had a similar feel. I never got into casters so I have been really looking around for a new class to get into. However, just as Rak pointed out, you are only a good paragon if you bring those over powered PvE skills, which I just won't be doing. Maybe one day I will, but for now I see no point in making a paragon when the only reason they are good are because of over powered skills.

Paragon is fun and very effective in PVE, which is what I think the OP had in mind.
As for PVP - whether someone is good or bad is totally dependent on the skills they have, so your point is dull. :s

Paragons are good yeah however I would compare them more to a ranged Warrior than a Ranger.
In my experience with the 2 classes (in PvP) they have quite a different feel. Paragons are based more on damage and shout support, very similar to a Warrior but the shout support is far far superior.
Rangers are focused less on damage (although recently this has somewhat changed) and more on utility and condition pressure, such as interupting and spreading poison.
I would still say Paragons are a nice class to play though.

Paragons are tons of fun to play and later in NF and EOTN you can run 3 paragons with the two heroes... Stuff dies really really fast then...

I played my Paragon through Nightfall and most of Factions before GW:EN came out and the only PvE skill that i had on the bar had been "There is Nothing to Fear" so they are great fun and support without lots of PvE skills. Then I found Imbagon and saw what they could really do set up well. Play them for fun, get used to them and see what you like. There is definately a different method for playing them and they are rewarding if you like support characters. My Paragon became my main character with a little over 8 mil exp from elite areas and a fair share of grinding titles. My point in the last statement is that I enjoyed her enough to play the heck out of her, trying one is the only real way to get a feel for them.
Lets face it there are many skills in many classes that either solely or combined are overpowered. Elementalist (hulking elemental farming build) set ups that take no damage, Obi Tanks, Permasins, Invincimonking(55 Necros & Monks). Anything can be overpowered and hard to stop giving the proper set of of skills and the like. I don't see anyone complaining on obi tanks or the 600/smite builds, or the proliferation of Cryway builds that make things super simple in even some of the Elite areas. While I guess they can complain about "over powered " PvE skills or builds, just remember to complain about the others while your at it.

I made a Paragon yesterday and so far I am quite pleased with its effeciveness in supporting the team and dealing damage. Perfect spears go really cheap too, I got a vamp/ebon/perf/zeal set for just 8k so yeh
talisk3
Are those the sets I want? vamp/zeal/ebon/perfect? I have the Bloodspear ATM.

I play with 3 different sets... Vamp, Furious and Zealous... Try get one of each... also, I prefer to play with +5 armor over +30hp, I find the extra armor more valuable than the extra hp... Ebon is not a good idea if you're going to bring an orders hero with you, as the orders willnot work with it...
pingu666
im running a furious one atm, but i got a vamp one
the pve skill combos are really nice for para, but there still pretty much as good as any other class without them

Paragons are fun to play if you don't mind one build stapled to your bar. I've found, IMO, that unless you are playing with the typical SY! build, or playing with multiple paragons, playing the support/damage roll is unsatisfying when I want to deal real damage.
