Until recently, the only problem I've had with my laptop has been the "nvlddmkm stopped responding" error. I've learnt to live with that for now as nothing I do seems to fix it.
However, recently a new problem has arrisen. For about a week I have had my laptop stop doing anything for seemingly no reason. Basically I am able to move my mouse cursor but thats it. clicking on icons/buttons/start menu etc. just results in the cursor taking its hourglass form and do its "thinking" animation. It doesn't matter how long I leave it for, nothing changes and I have to force a shut down by pressing and holding the power button.
I think the only thing I have installed around the time this problem started is some Windows Updates and the Runes of Magic Beta client.
Does anyone have any idea what could cause this to start happening?
Is it likely to be hardware or software related?
Should I drop my laptop on the floor and claim on insurance?
System info:
Dell Inspiron 1520 (no "shouldn't buy Dell" comments please :P, I've learnt my lesson)
Windows Vista Home Premium (32 bit)
Intel Core2 Duo 2.00GHz
2GB RAM
NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT
150GB HDD
Any help/ideas would be welcome
Cheers

Overheating? Check for dust clogging the cooling fan(s) and make sure the fan is running.

I would check the temps on your video card when running Guild Wars and call Dell support and get the computer exchanged. nVidia has an issue with laptop video cards, one of the reasons many companies now provide an ATI option.

The first problem is an nVidia driver problem. The second sounds like overheating. I may be wrong, but, I would do what others have suggested. Call Dell support.

Does it act this way as soon as it's booted up? Or does it occur after you have been playing/working/surfing for a while???
If it is a heat problem you could try propping it up on some books or something, to get more airflow under it.... also get all the dust out of any "vents" that you can. If it's still under warranty I'd send it back.... Dell is usually pretty decent about honoring their warranties. :/
