Could you ever buy elite skills?

I was arguing with my friend saying, "You were never able to buy them." (Zodiac Meteor) My friend says that's not right. "You could buy skills, but it lasted for a month or something from release."

We made a bet on who is right and who is wrong.

Which one of us is right? Me or my friend?

Edit: Buying, as in from skill trainers.

Yea you could buy them in ventari's refuge in the beta I think. Pretty sure you had to capture them after release though.

never played the beta, but have been playng since release, and as long as i've been playing you've always had to capture them.

Wasn't the something called "Skill Charm". I remember something like that vaguely, but couldnt find anything about it.

No, you never could buy them.

Actually, it used to be much harder to get elites. Someone mentioned skill charms. You used them like signets of capture, except for that they copied whatever skill the boss used last, so you had to cast it as the boss was using his elite, then hope he didn't use another skill before the cast was done! Or else you got some useless skill and had to buy another charm!

I couldn't find any proof but I'm 99% sure that my warrior build in the beta had earth shaker (elite) and healing hands (before it was elite) and that I never used a capture signet until the game went retail. You could also buy certain kinds of skill charms that would give you a random skill and I remember that I did this once and got martyr right from the vendor.

^ That's not the skill charms, that's the original cap sig. You had to cap the skills while the bosses used them, rather then picking the skill off a list after you killed it.

Skill charms where player crafted, think Star of Transference meets Tomes. A player could make them and sell them to allow another player learn a specific skill(or at least thats what I recall of them).

@Op As of release, skill trainers did not offer any elite skills. You had to cap them yourself, and the lack of tomes meant unlocking with Balth faction only had significance for PvP only chars.

I remember a Hero Skill Trainer in Nightfall offering an Assassin elite for a time. Never used it myself, but have vague memories of people getting a 'free' elite skill from the guy. Think it was the one in either Sunspear Great Hall or Kamadan. Was early in the game, I do remember that.

Never heard of being able to buy elites from a skill trainer though. Didn't play Beta, and didn't start playing until about 3 months after release though.
