How will Chat work in Guild Wars 2?
beanerman_99
Guild Wars is really the only MMO I have played so I am wondering how the Chat features will work when GW2 introduces persistent/open terrain. Will there be a 'world' chat tab for when you are out in the wilderness and have questions or need to ask for assistance? Are the towns instanced into districts like they are now? So like if I am in Lions Arch talking in town will people see what I say if they are in Droknars Forge?
Just curious how it works in open non-instanced games...

All I know is that I would like-very much!-for ANET to do something about the chat so I don't have to click in the chat box before I post. It's very irritating to try to say something on chat and wind up opening Inventory, the UI Map, the Big Map, and everything else; not to mention running into walls and the like, simply because I forgot to click on the @#$% chat box...

Hence i pass down my knowledge, press \ before typing
typing \ opens up the chat thing so you can type away without opening up your map, team records, inventory etc.
and about the GW2 thang, you know as much as we do, anet are keeping it abit hush hush.

It's actually / and it's supposed to be for typing out /emotes and such
(e.g. /age or /dance) since it will automatically type out / once you press it.
Pressing enter should open chat, ready for you to type immediately.
(If not you can go to Options > Control > Chat: Open Chat and bind it or any key(s) you like.)
Also, (by default) Shift + 1-5 will auto select which channel you use.
So if you last typed in trade, but want to type something in alliance, just press Shift + 5 and start typing...
and, hitting backspace will automatically open chat with whisper and the name of the last person who whispered to you...

the chat system currently in place seems fine to me. hopefully gw2 will be quite similar with maybe a few improvements. we'll just have to wait and see ;-)

It's all speculation, but I would "guestimate" that in GW2 you will still have the ability to communicate with your guild. That guild concept is core to the franchise. As far as global communicate goes... dunno.

hitting Enter does automatically activate the textfield tho? Try it out next time, I'd go mindnumbingly crazy if i had to click the field to write something :x

I think it`s to early for threads like this, the game ain`t gonna be finished for 2 more years and u talkin` about in-game chat :P !
Be realistic, that is not even the one of more important aspects of game or any game for that matter!

While none of us no for sure, judging by how things work in other MMOs....
We will be able to communicate with people in guild/alliance chat anywhere.
There will likely be a chat channel over a certain explorable area (ie, everybody in the west magnumum jungle can talk to each other, etc).

It will probalyb be like this:
Area chat / Local chat (only people near you) + Team/Guild/Alliance/hopes for a whisper Tab.

Simma down now!
Important or not I was just curious. I know that there are games out there, like World of Warcraft for instance, that have open non-instance areas. I have never played it so I do not know how chat works there. Therefore I don't know how chat works in games like WoW. When you leave a town and are adventuring in the wilds do you still see town chat? Do you only see your guild chat? etc. etc.

Wasn't there something about Anet investing in some voice chat program? Or was it NcSoft?
Aside from that, nothing else comes to mind. Ask again in 2010.
