Hello all!
Right now my roomate and myself downloaded the trial to try out the game. Ive done my research, and was suprised at how the game seems to be. Nice variety of classes, like the way its setup etc.
On trial, however, I realized we could not group together, so we really cant experience the game together, which is how we play. Weve both played previous MMORPGs (I know this game is a bit different). So were both going to try a bit of solo play and see how things go (Bummer we cant play together though>8 )
If someone doesnt mind, would you answer a few questions for both her and myself? I know some are opinion based, but still, would help us greatly!
Community! Honestly, how is the community? Overall friendly? Varies? Im sure there are lots of friendly people, but I mean as a whole?
Guild types. Are guilds broken down into different area's of interest? Such as PvP, Casual, Mature, Social, Role Playing (If it exists)?
What is the real difference between a RP charactor and a PvP charactor at creation? Im assuming that PvP charactos are a bit different, or possibly a charactor you wouldnt want to create until you are active and higher level?
Odd question, but the goals of the game. Besides level up XD
Is it an end game centered game, or more enjoy the leveling game? More social? More PvP focused?
If anyone takes the time to answer, would be much appreciated! I know the game has been around for a bit, and that GW2 is on the horizen, but first impression is that it is a well put together game, and much different then what I had thought these past couple years!
Thanks 8)
new Player some questions?

PvP characters are just meant to play against other players primarily. No story, just battle.
With a role playing character you only have what you unlock on that character to use as a skill (stuff you want has to be bought again or used a skill tome), as well as unlocking/paying for weapons, mods, armor, etc... so in PvE you need to get most items with time/money but in PvP you can create almost anything that you've unlocked at will, as well as having access to all unlocked skills.
PvP characters are like more fantasy, since you can create anything. But it takes a lot longer to get rare skins and armor on a PvP character... so people just use PvE characters to play PvP, plus if they dont' change weapons a lot then they don't need the ability to create anything on command.

- Unlocking skills, runes, etc
- Going through the story lines of each game
- Titles (I think they're kinda pointless but I know others like them)
- Player vs Player (you can take part in tournaments and try to get good)

I'm not one who actively talks with other people in-game on a regular basis, so I can't speak for the whole community. There are plenty of people still playing for you to find a niche of people that you'll like.
Same applies to guilds. There are lots of different guilds and types of guilds. I wouldn't recommend just joining with the first one that reaches out its hand, but when you have an idea for what you want to do in GW, you can find a guild that will help you get there.
RP characters have access to all of the storyline material that you've unlocked on your account. PvP characters can only PvP and have the ability to create customized weapons and armor with modifiers, runes, and inscriptions that you've found in PvE or unlocked through PvP.
The original GW, being back in '05 or so, intended for players to PvP. These days, in PvE, there are titles which you can progress in for some end. I'd say "choose your path," but these days it seems more like "pick your poison."
As for GW2 being on the horizon, I'd like to borrow your fusion-powered telescope.

You can group together with your friend, maybe you had trails for diferent campaigns, or maybe you cant group on a trail account.
Its various, there are some complete assholes, and some realy nice people, and all things inbetween.
Guilds are generally aimed at doing a few things, just take a look on these forums or at in game recrutement messages, they explain what that guild does.
PvP characters only have access to PvP areas, they start at level 20, and you have easier customisation of weapons and armour.
The game is focused on storyline, in prophecies you will be about 2/3 through the campaign when you reach lvl 20 (max), and in the other you will be lvl 20 at about 1/3 the way through the campaign. And after/during completion of campaigns there are lots of things to do like: achievements for doing certain things (titles), dungeons, side quests, mini-games, farming for items, PvP, Elite areas and unlocking skills and upgrades.

Agreed with subarucar, I don't exactly see how you "couldn't group together." You DEFINITELY can. You just have to make sure you guys are in the same game, and in the same district (displayed and changeable in upper left hand corner while in towns) of the same town

Thanks all for the replies! I really appreciate it, and some, like guilds, was common sence. nice to hear there is a variety of things to do as well!
On grouping though, I tried to invite, and received a message stating that trial accounts cannot invite, though we can be invited. as were both on trial, perhaps thats why, or maybe I missed something, so il play around with it.
LOL well, on the GW main page it mentioned GW2, so maybe not so close on the horizen, but i the works, why I mentioned it.
Really apprecaite the time you guys spent answering my questions!

They are still out there but you'll have to look for those good players / guilds.

I started this game about almost 4 years ago with some real life friends and so started a guild together, its been my first guild I'm part off still and have gotten the honor to lead it for about 2 years now. So we mainly are a pve guild but our guildethic is to have fun in a friendly and respectful environment. So here and there we do some non-pro pvp too.
So far we also have been lucky to by an alliance leader guild for about 1 year now, after meeting up with some like-minded guids.

A pve char starts out non-maxed and can be used in pve and pvp, although a pvp char is easier to re-roll for whatever prof you need.

It seems like most of your questions have already been pretty thoroughly answered, so I won't worry about rehashing what's already been said. However, if you want to play together with your friend, give me a shout in-game (Fury Incarnate) and I'd be happy to host a group for you guys. Or answer any other questions you have, for that matter.

guilds - have a browse through the guild recruiting section and see if any match your criteria. some guilds primarily PVP (GVG/HA/AB/RA etc), some guilds are primarily PVE (player vs environment, title farming, HM missions etc). some guilds are serious, some guilds are laid back, some are a mix of both, just try find a guild that suits you. always remember, its not quantity, its quality of its members. also try find a guild thats active.
pve vs pvp - pvp characters are immediatly level 20, but you can only take them to the PVP areas to, well, PVP. Id highly recommend going PVE to start with, get to know the game, get to know the skills, get used to how various skills work and how they are effective.
the game - i think most people in PVE are title farmers, they want as many titles unlocked as possible to count towards something in Guildwars 2. Since you can get to level up to 20 in a couple of days, levelling definatly isnt high on the things to do list as it gets done so quickly. everyone in the game is pretty even matched, everyone has the best weapons, everyone has the same armour, everyone can get the same skills (providing you have the 3 campaigns and expansion). people pay for the skin and rarity of stuff, but your 1k max armour from droks and r9 15^50 weapon crafted from the weaponsmith for 5k is JUST as effective as a 1 million pound obsidian armour and a 1 million pound crystalline sword.
hope you enjoy your game
