Am I the first to suggest some kind of desktop app that allows you to see who is online on your GW friends list? I know there is a similar thing for Team Fortress 2, where you can view server info without having to load up the game all the time.

EDIT: I forgot to put this in the post, but I have seen people on the forums who have a sig that says whether they are online or not, could you just put all of those together or something?

This would be absolutely fantastic for GW, but could also be problematic to implement. Many people already have their own, consolidated IM clients and don't want to switch. (I.e. trillian, pidgin, miranda, meebo...) Because players would log in with their GW accounts, account theft could become an even larger problem.

I would love to see better friends list integration in guild wars, for example sign on notifications and easier whispering. Perhaps even a nickname system so that you don't have to type out long character names.

Maybe they could integrate into Xfire or one of the other big IM companies out there, where you could just add GW:character name to your contact list.

xfire works if everyone on friendlist uses it, I would say only way to do this is by making some type of a launcher kinda like gwx2 that would open gw's in the same way you do with xfire. seems xfire is the best choice based on the options.

There actually is an application for seeing if your Guild Wars friends are online.

It's called Guild Wars.

Honestly, where are you going to be that gives you access to a computer but not to Guild Wars? You're asking for a desktop application which makes the assumption that it needs to be installed (like Steam for TF2). In which case, if you're not at a computer that can play Guild Wars I highly doubt you're at one that can download and run an application.

In any case, just get all your Guild Wars friends to download and install Steam (free) and add Guild Wars as a nonSteam application. Your Steam friendlist will show who is on Steam and if they're playing Guild Wars or not. Or you could use a different 3rd Party App like Xfire, or any of the other numerous apps out there.

Guild Wars doesn't need its own specific desktop app to do this.

The thing on the 360 is good, where it shows on MSN what game someone is on.

I didn't mean that I wanted to see who was online without actually having Guild Wars available on the computer, what I meant is to be able to see it without having to load up Guild Wars just to check the friends list. Good idea about Steam.
