Warhammer online player having a sneaky peek
Hellmut34
Hi Guild war players,
I am an avid fan of warhammer online but have recently become concerned with the server issues and Lag that we are all experiencing during PvP.
I've heard that Guild wars has a great PvP aspect and i was wondering if buying the prophecies pack would be a viable option for me.
This is what i want from my gameplay
1) Good questing with other players
2) Battles on a reasonably large scale.
Does this game fit the bill for me?
P.s Dont direct me to WOW i am sick of that game

PvP is limited to 8 vs 8 teams mostly. 8v8v8 on one or two games. Forget.
PvP is separate from PvE. If you want quests, then you will have to go PvE. You can however use PvE characters in PvP. You cannot use PvP characters in PvE however.
Just getting Prophecies limits your skill options and may/may not annoy you that others have more options.

If you want to be seriously competitive in PvP, you would need all four of the games. You can quest with other players, but honestly most people just prefer to use heroes and henchmen and play by themselves. Also, the largest PvP matches would be either a three-way Heroes' Ascent battle of 8v8v8, or Alliance Battles are 12v12.
Guild Wars is great for me, but it doesn't really sound like your type of game.

1) playing pve can get sort of lonely. Most people will simply use heroes/henchmen in most of the normal game since pugs in places other than the elite areas tend to be bad and rare to find. So if you're looking for human company through all of pve, unless you join a really friendly guild you simply won't get it.
2) don't know how warhammer online is, but common pvp scale is 8vs8 on Heroe's Ascent and GvG, and 4vs4 on Team Arenas. This is where you'll find the most organized PvP. There's also 12vs12 in Alliance Battles (you need Factions in order to play there), but along with Random Arenas' 4vs4 (first time pvp'ers will hang around there) these two are the low end pvp.

Don't forget to mention you can also 1v1 Totally not large scale, but fun to do. If you get the nightfall campaign, you can not only scrim against your friends, but also play hero battles, where you fight alongside 3 heroes (which you can chose and control, just like an extra you that (kinda) thinks for itself as well)
Guild Wars has indeed a really good PvP system, but if you're going for large scale, this isn't your game.
I remember Lineage II having very large scale PvP with castle sieges and stuff... but I don't know how active this game still is, and it's pay to play. (and very Korean )

Damn thats a shame.
Im quite a fan of PvE as well though so the only viable option is probably to roll a PvE character and check out the PvP from within that character.
I think that for the price of the original and the fact that it requires no subs, i might just check it out.
Who knows, i might learn to Love it anyway. I enjoyed Lord of the rings online and the PvE element here sounds quite good too.
In Warhammer yes the battles are quite large 30v30 upwards , but its such a lagfest that people are leaving in their droves.
However the scenarios are good and they are more or less about 12v12 so it might be similar to what you have here.
I always look to join guilds so i guess that my gameplay would be enhanced with that here.
Thanks for your replies so far

not surprising warhammer has lag problems. You'll get less lag here, but you'll also have smaller instances. that's part of the trade-off.
GW2 promises to be larger scale, but it looks like 2011 launch date (maybe).
But if you also like questing, the pve aspect of gw is worth the purchase.

If you are serious about PvP, you need more skills than a single campaign can supply. You can either purchase the entire series (Prophecies, Factions, Nightfall) from anywhere or the PvP Access Kit from PlayNC.com and then the skill packs from the on-line store (access through your log-in screen), if you want to PvP immediately.
As for Guild Wars, both PvE and PvP are popular. The game is coming up on its fourth anniversary and still being purchased. Many forum members are no longer active due to running out of things to do after so many years.
There are still many PvE players, but many areas tend to have scarce populations due to the size of the game world.
Here is a link to the Official Wiki http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Main_Page which covers most of the basic information. This is also the in-game help through F10 or Help on the Menu.
Play the game and you will get hooked, just as the rest of us did.

i was a guildwars player (still use the forums to troll on borat's QQ threads.) but now i play warhammer, gw's is a good game especialy for pvp but getting gw's this late in the game is pointless, stale meta and pvp lag (when other "weekend events" are on) stick with warhammer and just do t1-3 with alts, over and over till goa fix there shite servers. its a good way of making money as well, just take talisman crafting skill and by the time your lvl 35+ you will be cranking out tals worth any where between 20g-250g (300g if ur lucky :P)

i'd suggest trying it out, getting a trial key, since there are no monthly fees if you like it you can come back whenever. yes you won't get the same satisfaction some of us got upon release as the game has turned into a title grind fest but that's only cause we've been on it for 4 years. there are still plenty of people just starting and those that are willing to help newer players.
the only big differences you'd have to get accustomed to are that its all instanced besides towns/outposts so there wont be any of those realm pve quests you can join anytime. also be aware that in the low level quests you may have difficulty finding 3 other players (party size max 4 at those areas) just because not many people are on all the time that are that low a level. but that's what heroes/henchmen/guilds are for. high end pvp is 8v8 organized. you only have 8 skills anytime you leave an outpost that are available for use so you have to think of what role you want to play and if your teams builds support yours. imo successful pvp here is more challenging than war. though again, you'll find opinions that it's stale, become boring, etc. but that's cause it's been out for 4 years.
i'd say get a trial or get the plat edition @ newegg (15$+free shipping). if you like it you can buy factions for $10 as well. make a pve char and check out the storyline. when u feel like pvp, make a pvp char and you're insta max level but can only access pvp areas so youre good to go. mess around in Random Arenas just to get a feel of your character and how other people play, then try to get into a guild v guild or heroes ascent (ha) guild.
i liked lotro too, killer graphics and farming was addictive for me. too bad it was p2p.

As an avid player of both, let me say they are completely different animals.
An organized 8v8 in Guild Wars "feels" just as large as two warbands fighting over BOs in WAR. Mainly due to the way combat is paced. You die far less often in Guild Wars due to the nature of many of the defensive skills, as such an 8v8 can be very chaotic and won't ever devolve into people being farmed at their spawn point. And every single profession can resurrect people (and not just with expensive tonics or standards). Plus there is no need to worry about people leaving and joining mid-fight so it never turns into a zergfest. Battles always turn on player skill and the team composition.

I did read the link, but that free EoTN deal wasn't below the price when I checked (I see it now though). That's a really good deal... I wish I had that deal!

You have to understand that "high-end" or "hardcore" PvP in GW means something completely different than in WAR or any other MMO game. The closest analogue GW has is playing Alliance Battles for a town-holding alliance or something, albeit this is considered the "low-end" PvP due to its random/casual nature. (3 teams of 4 are randomly paired together vs 3 other teams.) At the "high-end" you have gvg where guilds have ladder ratings which rise and fall through participation in tournaments, and the greatest achievement is to battle through swiss rounds and the playoffs to take home a gold cape from the monthly tournament. This is less "RvR" or "FactionvFaction" as most MMOs divide, and more an e-sport like an FPS or RTS.
For what it's worth GW still has the deepest mechanics and best balance of PvP CRPGs, but the large-scale worldish PvP so popular in other MMOs is not that developed here, confined mostly to the Factions modes. Still it's pretty fun for what it is, and if you can find it cheap you might as well try it. You do need the Factions campaign to play in these modes. You don't necessarily need to worry about the pvp/pve divide early on, because of the low level cap and relative ease of finding max items. Yes when you get "serious" you'll be faced with either rolling PvP or else spending a lot of time/money tracking down perfect gear, but you will do just fine in AB or RA playing with level 20 gear. Same goes for "needing" multiple campaigns, it's fine to start out with just one and see how you like it.

Achrr The Archer
As far as the PvP I believe he would be interested in, he's a few years and campaigns too late.
