Not sure if you can do it with prophecy only skills but farming the elementals outside of sardalac sanitarium in hard mode was how I managed to get my first elite armor. They drop quite a bit of granite (which tends to sell well) as well as the occasional ruby or sapph, and gold weapons. you can make about 10k an hour.
It does have to be in hard mode, however, so if you have not finished the campaign then finishing the story line should be your first objective.
Edit: here you go, found this on pvxwiki: http://pvx.wikia.com/wiki/Build:W/an...emental_Farmer You can replace enraging charge with sprint and all the skills are available in prophecies.

You can save up the materials - salvage them instead of selling them. You might want to check up on materials crafters and see if it's more worth it to craft than to buy rare mats straight from the trader.
For the record, I didn't get my first elite set until about 6/7 months in, and that was after a friend gave me some amber.

1. Don't type like that
2. If you don't get the other games the best thing you can do is go to pvxwiki.com and look for proph only farming builds.
3. Continue playing the game and don't buy items after you have max weapons. It adds up.

4. Don't buy zkeys - the chance of getting your money back from everlastings etc. is slim to none.

You don't make any money buying z-keys. You get mostly creme brule's, fire waters and worthless high req golds. I'm level 4 zaishen and have only gotten 3 or 4 elite tomes and 2 golds that were even worth thinking of selling.
The money is in selling them. Register your account with Tolkano then go to guildwars.com and make your predictions. 1st update of next month collect your points and get zkeys and sell them. Free cash.

make predictions and sell z-keys every month. make about 100k if the prices don't take another drastic dip, lmao

you can make money if you buy the keys then resell them for more, but that's not likely to happen any time soon.
Farm/predict for the keys and sell them, then farm what you can with what you have.

someone said it earlier but i'd like to restate it.
once you have max armor and max weapon don't buy anything else besides what you need for the armor. Even then you're better of salvaging things for materials and saving the money. Also pick up EVERYTHING and sell it to the merchant. The gold adds up rather nicely after a little bit and you'll be there in no time.

That's exactly how I saved for my first elite set.
After that, making money just started to come easy. Made a monk for 55'ing, killed a bunch of undead, started getting into the other stuff. Good times.
You'll notice when you start to make money, it doesn't stop no matter how you play...normal play through higher level areas just seems to shovel cash into your vault.

3b: Pick up your reward points from Kun Shao in LA, Kamadan, KC or great temple
3c: Turn the points in to Tolkano at 5 points/key
3d: spam wts zkeys 4.5k ea at the great temple.
3e: after a couple of hours finally settle for 4k ea unless the tonic for this month is really cool.

Now I have a Totally different take on all of this than everyone else.
Make yourself a "Monk/ELE" that you will have STAY in PRE-SEARING. Level that guy up to lvl 10 atleast. This will take you two days. Just look on www.presearing.com for the guide to the Legendary Defender of Ascalon.
From lvl 10 (just do the charr at the gate quest over and over to get to lvl 10)
Get the skills, Healing Breeze, Shielding hands and Firestorm. Set your secondary to Ele when you get firestorm.
Then FARM pre-searing on Special Weekends.
The lucky weekend just passed and I made over 150K in 3 days. i did not eve get to farm on sunday. I took 100K of it and traded it for 200K in post AND I bought a mini Gwen that I still have in pre.
Also if you are looking in the future, you can buy charr carvings in pre for 10-15 gold each and run them to post. During the Halloween and Wintersday Festivals you can trade 3 carvings for 1 ale and sell that for 100 gold. This will also double your gold.
Or you can be a gate monkey and do about 50 runs an hour and get 2.5K an hour or 5K post gold.

I remember getting elite armor for my ranger and necro once I completed Prophicies, way back when it was the only game out at the time.
So getting elite armor is doable, I just remember saving/salvaging/selling all that I could and crafting materials that were cheaper to craft.
All this was done without serious farming, back then I didn't even know what farming was
