So im thinking of playing GW but im not sure what to expect im a Diablo II and WoW player and i usually play Paladin or Warrior so is this game for me and what class should i play, thanks

Afaik theres a free trial available on the official website; don't know if it's still available.
As to profession, Warrior or Dervish is probably what you're looking for (though if you do play War, don't go /Mo).
Can't compare the games because I've never played WoW/Diablo.

Yeah, you'd be better off playing the trial. You can play for 10 hours or 14 days, whichever you reach first.
Playing the game for some time will give you a better idea if you like this game or not, opposed to what anyone here can tell you in words.
Clicky.
It's a Prophecies trial though, the first installment of Guildwars, meaning you can only choose between Warrior, Ranger, Monk, Necromancer, Mesmer and Elementalist as profession.
Scour the wiki, and read this sticky.
Enjoy!

There are no servers in Guild Wars, just districts. You can switch freely to US, European and Asian.
And don't try to make a Paladin. Guild Wars is a team game. There's no need to make a character who can do damage, absorb damage, and heal itself. In the end, you'll be only mediocre at all these jobs if you don't specialize in one. You got a team, each with their own role.
Anyway, just pick a profession you seem to like. If that's Paragon, give it a try. If you don't like playing it, just try another.

A trial key is on the page I linked to in an earlier post. You'll need to make an account with NCSoft. You can't make a Paragon in Prophecies though, and a Paragon would be the closest you can get to a 'divine warrior' in Guild Wars. You could always make a Warrior/Monk, like half of the Guild Wars players, but that's up to you.

As for lore in GW each profession, in Prophicies at least, is tied to one of the gods.
Balthazar - Warriors and Elementalists
Lyssia - Mesmers
Melandru - Rangers
Grenth - Necromancers
Dwayna - Monks
After you pick your primary profession you can select a secondary profession. While you are locked into that choice for a while eventually you will be able to change your secondary profession at will to any of the other professions that are in the chapter you purchase.
Secondly don't let people tell you what is or is not a good combo. If your just playing PvE then anything will work. Granted some work better than others but PvE is just about having fun so do whatever you enjoy.
That being said if you wish to get into PvP you should make use of Observer Mode to follow what people are using. In PvP a bad build will be very detrimental to your entire team and will end up with you being either laughed at or kicked from your team.
As has been stated this is a team game so the more people you can get to join with you on quests and missions the easier, and more fun, they will be.

Dillon, I came from WoW when this game first came out. I still play a bit of WoW now and then too! Both games have a lot I wish the other had. WoW ought to do away with those time consuming bird flights and just let you teleport instantly from one flight point to another. And paying to reset your talents is just archaic nonsense.
GW at first feels really different from WoW (and is) but give yourself a bit of time to get up to speed. It is worth it, IMHO.
Pressing F10 will provide a huge amount of help and reference information. Hold down the Alt key in town to look around. Click on any NPC nametag to run to it and open a dialogue. Tab-Spacebar will select "next" target in the field and attack. c-Spacebar will select closest target and attack. Hold down control out in a battle zone to look around. Once you get used to it, it is WoW with an automatic transmission and your own army to run around with you!
I play a Paragon and everything else except for Ritualist and Necromancer, both of which are still leveling. The Paragon is much like a ranged Paladin who chunks a spear. The Warrior is very good as well.
I like my WoW Druid, Mage, and now my DK, yes I do. But nothing in WoW really beats the thrill (for me anyway) of setting out on a GW Hard Mode Map with three heroes, four hench, and when the necro hero gets them up, a small army of undead minions. I wish WoW had a hard mode. Just imagine traveling to hard mode Goldshire and heading out into an Elwynn Forest filled with Level 78+, and loot to match!

for the record, gw has no competition over WoW.
also paragons are pretty cool. paladin in wow uses close up melee combat and has heals and party buffs for himself and others. paras use a spear from short range and mostly only affect the team through shouts and chants that increase dmg, def, or survivability in general.
P.S. they also have "godmode" in pve. wow doesnt

Warriors: Able to increase their moving and attack speeds, has a similar attack to one of the Warrior attacks from Diablo that made you spin around, attacking everything around you. Warriors are able to take a great deal of punishment, reducing the damage they receive with inscriptions on their armor, insignias on their shields and even raising their maximum health using certain skills. Warriors have a unique attribute that increases their damage through Strength which causes armor penetration, which increases the damage and effectiveness of their attacks on higher armored creatures.
Necromancers: Able to create minions like in Diablo, though in Guildwars you can have a potential of up to 10 per necromancer. Necromancers are also able to exploit corpses in various ways. Making them explode to provideo area damage, creating Wells from them which benefit your team or handicap ennemies. Necromancers are also masters of casting hexes and providing nasty conditions to the ennemies. Necromancers have a unique attribute called Soul Reaping which automatically causes the user to gain energy equal to the points assigned to the attribute each time an ennemy, minions or ally dies.
Paragon: Masters of party support and precise ranged damage dealers. Paragons are un-equaled in their ability to party support and to be able to keep re-using their skills over and over. Paragons can do many supporting things that other professions can but applying them to everyone within their area of effect. Paragons have effects that automatically re-apply to targets whenever shouts end. Paragons have a unique attribute that gives them energy back for everyone affected by their shouts within their range.
Rangers: Masters of long ranged combat, applying conditions and interupting. Rangers have varying attack ranges depending on the type of bow they use. Each bow type has a different range, attacking speed and flight time. Rangers also have the ability to charm a single pet and have him aid you in combat. Rangers have a unique attribute that lowers the cost of bow attack skills, touch spells and the casting of spirits.
Monks: Masters of Healing, damage protection and Smiting. Monks are excellent healers and provide protective enchantments which last over time. Monks can Heal, Protect, Smite and do Holy Damage, which ignores armor and can resurect party members with great success. Monks benefit from a unique attribute that provides additional healing for spells they cast at no cost to them.
Assassins: Masters of quick and deadly damage, Master of the Critical Hit, teleporting, applying conditions and hexes. An assassin benefits from increased attack speed from the special weapons they yield, daggers. An assassin is able to teleport directly to a target, deal insane amount of damage in a short period of time and then teleport out. Assassin's also have a unique type of combat you may find familiar that resembles Diablo. Assasin's attack in chairs which goes: Lead Attack, Off-hand attack, Dual Attack. usually, but not always, going from weakest to move devastating. Assassin's benefit from a unique attribute that gives them energy back whenever they achieve a critical hit.
These are only some of the professions in guildwars but I just wanted to pick some out that had strong resemblences to those of Diablo.
You may find many more ressemblences but something you should know, if you were not already aware is that Diablo was created by Blizzard and BattleNet, Guildwars was created by ArenaNet, which is the company that BattleNet evolved into.

Anyway, to the OP - yes, Guild Wars can seem a bit complex at first. However, I wouldn't give it up yet, as it really is an amazing game and is tons of fun. I'd say at the very least play out your trial before you decide. Mess around with things, read up on the wiki, etc. It's fun. And on a character, the only thing you are locked into is your primary profession - and if you decide you don't like that, you can just make a new character.

Woudnt you consider a Paragon more like a Paragon? Paragon's are usually melee fighters that heal and support their entire team aswell as themselves, which is what a Paragon does. Paragons use Shouts, chants, etc to buff their party, heal, remove hex/conditions, increase damage/speed. A Paragon does also have holy attacks, though I admit limited mainly to 1. A Paragon however does have wings whenever they use chants and they already have similar armor to an Avatar or Paragon-ish.

Play as a Warrior. You'll be fine if you look at a Guild Wars Warrior the same way you would look at a Barbarian from Diablo II - you're there to do damage and kill things quickly.
Forget the Paladin idea. People have tried it over the last (almost) 4 years by using the Warrior / Monk profession combo, and it fails. If ANet wanted Paladins in GW, there would have been a Paladin profession.

However, a Paragon is not a melee fighter - they use a spear, which is a ranged weapon I play a Dervish and my friend plays a Paragon, and when there's a fight? He's certainly not the one rushing in to kill things.

And from Diablo, a Paladin DID run in and kill things, It had a shield bash attack. Plus it has been proven that a Paragon can do the same damage, if not higher then a Warrior but at a ranged distance.
moriz
melee generally means close range. PHYSICAL is anything that does damage by impacting itself. you are correct about a paragon's damage though. from all indications, they do about the same DPS as a sword warrior.
Elder III
I think that you would be more satisfied playing as Warrior or Dervish. While Paragon also has remnants of the Paladin class, I believe the first two are more similar... esp. in the way they feel as you actually play them. Warrior is one of the easiest professions to learn as well, plus the armor looks more like a traditional Paladin then either of the other two.
With that said, if you enter GW constantly comparing it to other games then you are more likely to be disappointed with it. GW is it's own game and deserves to be played (and Enjoyed!!!) on it's own merits. You will have allot more fun if you look at it in that fashion.
