Collectors useless?
Dee Cazo
Does anyone else think after four years these collectors turned out to be somewhat useless. Collectors are all over each continent but their are maybe 4-5 worth collecting for. The ninja mask, and all of those sorts of collectibles but everything else seems kinda pointless.
Should they completely axe this out of Guild Wars 2 or will they find use out of it.
What do you guys think should be to replace it or make it better.
The Pre-Sear collector seems to be a big step forward for something to collect but I would like to see a cool concept for this game-wide and not just one guy worth collecting for.

I don't see why they want to remove collectors in gw2. Even if players don't find them usefull anymore, they don't do any harm right? And as you're saying after 4 years they arent used anymore.. So at the start they were. Isnt gw2 going to be a fresh start? So probably they will have use again. Also <3 to the 40/40 weapon set crafters. Or for an high energy set. I think they are getting more used they you think. They just should add more different skins to them, as they kind of all have the same ones.
XxSanctusxX
I kinda like collectors, farm trophys for 10 min, and get a perfect 20/20 offhand in return. I can afford gold ones, but why pay a lot more money for something you can get pretty easy. I like collecters and they shouldnt be removed. Maybe the low-lvl weapon ones are pretty useless (I've never used them) but they can be helpful to some. Cant see how they are doing harm.
Daichu
I'm guessing that the collectors are still useful to some ppl who are just starting the game.
When I first started playing GW, it was 'kind of fun' to grind out collecting items and trade them to a collector for a "good" weapon.
But like many ppl now, my newly made chars get high end weaps 10 mins after creation, but at the beginning the collectors were a good way to get better equipment at a reasonable cost...at least when you are brand spanking new to GW.

Archress Shayleigh
collectors are used ALOT. Easy trophy items for somewhat OK items.
HawkofStorms
Collectors were used a lot more often in Prophecies, when getting good items was a lot harder to get. Heck, I still have my 45/-2 stance crimson carpace shield, which was the shield EVERY PvE warrior used in PvP because perfect shields were rare preinscription and before greens existed.
While they are less used now, they are still frequently used by newbie players to get armor and weapons (ie, people who don't even have 100g to buy ID kits). They serve their purpose, though I agree that new collectors might be a good idea, and that some collectors are kinda worthless (why are there so many collectors in EotN for instance).

MisterB
My heroes will collectively smite your butt for making this suggestion to take away their weapons. My Ranger still has a few collector bows. They're perfect. Don't feel the need to replace them.
Artisan Archer
Plus they have some unique skins too. Like the Jade Mandible 'Long Sword' which uses the skin of Stefan [Fighter Henchman]'s sword.
Ariena Najea
Collectors make getting good weapons on little gold possible. Consider the collector in the Marketplace collecting 5 Putrid Cysts, that gives you a q9 20/20 Fire Staff. You can either craft one for 5k+materials, buy one from a player for at least 5k+, or use some of them things you get just by playing the game. Even for armor, sure you lose your insignia slot but it's a good option if you are waiting to get 15k armor or simply don't have 10k to blow on the gold cost and materials. New players need this stuff, and veterans can get shinies from their heroes.
Seems simple enough to me.

I use collectors constantly to equip heroes and to get max equipment for a temporary build. Leave 'em alone they ain't hurtin' no-one.
lorazcyk
I have been playing guild wars for 42 months, and I still use collectors a lot! I use them for hero weapons, weapons for new friends, or when I want to try a different weapon, and don't feel like dishing out the money for one.
I also just made a new necromancer, and I know which elite armor I will get him. I got collector's armor temporarely, so I don't waste money on mats. Monstruous claws/eyes/fangs... expensive... so I'd rahter use collector's armor until I buy the elite version.

there are actually a few items that are worth more from collectors than the items they collect (so you get the drops--trade them in and then sell the collector items)....also there are a lot of collectors that have scrolls which are very useful.
and yes, many of the max collector weapons are just as good if not better than many greens, gold or other drops.

After four years there are now a staggering number of weapons/mods floating around the player market. Wasn't the case in beginning. GW2 is also starting fresh and there will again be a need for quick access to various weapons and mods before the new market can get into full swing.
Sniper22
No I like them. I used them to make my 40/40 blood set for my necro cause I liked the skins. I also used them to get my death magic staff. They shouldn't be removed.
MithranArkanere
Make their items inscribed, Or at least make shields and wands accept their upgrades, and their skins different in each region. People will definitely use them more, if you also add a weapon upgrade trader.
I only used collectors for some staves when Heroes were added, but now most of them have /bonus, greens an some gold stuff. Almost all my Zheds and Sousukes had Lotus staves for quite a lot of time.
Lotus staves are great because they are a different skin.
- 1 for The Crystal Desert
- 1 for The rest of Prophecies' Tyria
- 1 for Shing Jea and Kaineng
- 1 for Echovald
- 1 for Jade Sea
- 1 for Istan and Kourna
- 1 for Vabbi
- 1 for The Desolation
Each should have each one different skin of common skins that drop in the area for their collectors. For example, luxon collectors should have Jade skins. Those things drop all over the place like if monsters were made out of them, but it's boring having the same skins in collectors there than in Kaineng and the Kurzick side.
But removal is out of the question. Their items may be boring (with a few proud exceptions) but they are quite usable if you need something for low price and can waste the time farming the trophies.

I miss the collectors with obscure items when Prophecies was the only game.
There was a collector by Serenity Temple that had a bow that was:
11-18 piercing damage
33% faster fire rate
10% chance of missing
Yep.... that was an interesting bow....
But I do use collectors for Hero items and sometimes items for myself if I don't want to bother buying/farming a cool weapon.

I say keep them. I havn't used collectors that much lately, the exception being that Fire staff Ariena Najea mentioned. However, I think they're a really nice idea, and they were very helpful to me and many others when we were just starting out.
Plus they're a nice idea to. Sometimes you don't want to just buy a weapon, it's kind of fun to get something special.

They're a good way to get a perfect weapon/offhand without paying through the nose or grinding for very long.

Collectors still serve purporse. Could be that veterans no longer have reason to collect new gear, but they still hold value for new players. And that is their purporse, equip newbies. They guarantee that everyone can get items they need without having to be lucky.
They do not have to have lasting value, just like mission does not have to be replayable hundreds of times.
(Hawk: EOTN collectors are actually usefull as they offer shields with +30hp and empty incription slot. awesomeness. There is kinda lot of them, but that only means that you can trade everything you get for something usefull.)

True dat Mitharan. Lotus staffs are awesome. All hail Aborstone farming.
MithranArkanere
Also, I think that it won't harm if all collectors had a last 'alternate' item at the end of the list after the weapons or armor. Something that is not a weapon but may be useful, like Hunter's Ale, XP scrolls, -5% DP cookie...
This that those players that are already fully equipped could use so no trophies ends up as something no one use anymore and discard or not pick up at all.
There are some Nightfall and Eye of the North collectors that have exclusively that kind of items. But I mean to put the list of weapons, and on its end, the 'extra' alternate item.

20/20 foci and staves are nice. Given the cost of the inscriptions to replicate these, I still use a lot of them.
Also I <3 lotus staves.

for the most part, useless. but they are cool just to have around i suppose ;-) harkens back to the olden days =D. especially when they didn't show up on the map, lol

Most collectores are indeed useless/superfluous.
But especially EOTN collectors offer excellent max stat items. Zweistein already mentioned the great +30 HP shields with inscription slot.
* Prophecies was made during a time where levelling up made up almost the whole chapter. Now we have Nightfall and Factions with extremely short levelling, where only max stat items make sense.
* I think the problem is that too many collectors offer undesirable items with very unattractive conditional modifiers, like "while hexed". This is also a problem of the available item mods. 15^50 is a very easy condition to achieve, 15% while enchanted for example is not bad, but simply not nearly as flexible.
I just think we have too many outright CRAPPY collectors. The idea itself is great.
I can also Collectors exchanging drops for raw materials, maybe not every rare material, but some.

Collectors only suck because our weapons cap out and never need improving. If, in GW2, there was no cap to a weapon's capability, then collectors with hard to find items in hard to reach places offering decent rewards would be very cool

You can get weapons with the stats of greens for 5 Monster Drops. I say it's an amazing deal and I take advantage of it whenever possible. Though, the skins are usually really bad (besides the Lotus Staffs, I love those things).
Yeah, the amount of really really bad collector weapons far exceeds the amount of good collector weapons (I've never found a use for a sword that's dmg +20% while hexed), but I personally use collectors pretty regularly.
Voodoo Rage
The trick is remembering what collector's items are worth saving. Off the top of my head I know that Warden Horns, Bleached Carapace Shells, Celestial Essence, and Massive Jaw Bones all yield a 20/20 necro focus. I forgot what gives you an 20/20 Accursed Focus but it actually has a nice skin (diamond shaped shield that can be dyed to match your armor nicely).
JASON626
I think the non max armor collectors are worthless but some weapon ones i'ved for heroes.

In the Crystal Desert you can start to get some really good Collector Weapons:
5 Dessicated Hydra Claws get you:
req9 15-28dmg 15^50 Shortbow
req9 11-22dmg +10e 20% HSR, 20% HCT (Curses) Wicked Staff (Dark Damage!)
req9 +12e 20/20 Healing Ankh (Healing Prayers)
req9 +12e 20/20 Jeweled Chalice (Inspiration Magic)
5 Iridescent Griffon Wings get you:
req9 +12e 20/20 Jeweled Chakram (Illusion Magic)
req9 +12e 20/20 Frost Artifact (Water Magic)
5 Topaz Crests get you:
req9 11-22dmg +10e 20% HSR, 20% HCT (Domination) Inscribed Staff (Chaos Damage!)
req9 11-22dmg +10e 20% HSR, 20% HCT (Blood) Cruel Staff (Dark Damage!)
req9 15-28dmg 15^50 Recurve Bow
5 Spiny Seeds get you:
req9 +12e 20/20 Inscribed Chakram (Domination Magic)
req9 +12e 20/20 Grim Cesta (Soul Reaping)
5 Dune Burrower Jaws get you:
req9 +12e 20/20 Grim Cesta (Death Magic)
req9 +12e 20/20 Flame Artifact (Fire Magic)
req9 6-28dmg 15^stance Ascalon Battle Axe
req9 15-28dmg 15^50 Ascalon Long Bow
5 Jade Mandibles get you:
req9 11-22dmg +10e 20% HSR, 20% HCT (Smiting) Smiting Staff (Holy Damage!)
5 Massive Jawbones get you:
req9 11-22dmg +10e 20% HRS, 20% HCT (Domination) Inscribed Staff (Chaos Damage!)
Chaos, Dark, and Holy damage on certain staves are amazing, if you plan on wanding something, and with "Forget Me Not" inscriptions going for insane amounts of cash (~20k iirc), I'd much rather farm 5 drops than shell out cash for my Heroes and secondary characters to have max gear (my Warrior gets spoiled, everyone else still has to earn their stuff, dammit!).

Skyy High
Collectors are awesome. Only reliable way for a PvE char to get a perfect focus, given how rare and expensive perfect focus inscriptions tend to be...the last really expensive ones, too.
Saphrium
A few months back I started a new account with nothing, I find collectors the most reliable resource for useful weapons and armors stats. Plus if you are a prophecy only character, collectors are the only way you can get max Krytan armor as a monk.
Owik Gall
Use the services of the collectors as best as you can. Their stuff is a start, but a good start. Don't expect anymore, or ask the same.
Anyways, wait until the game comes out before you complain about its features.

I think collecters were and still are a very useful set of NPC's.
All my character started out with collecters weapons. I'm was a bit of a packrat so always kept the collectable drops and when i started a new character I always went and got them a range of standard weapon sets (20/20 sets/high energy etc). Granted alot of them are crap but many are not and i still use a load of +5 and 15^50 collecter bows for making the odd speciality bow for occasional use
The are also very good for outfitting multiple sets of heros with.

I like collectors and have used them a lot for either weapons for myself when just starting, finding a perfect weapon (one with stats I needed for something) that wouldn't break the bank, or equipping my heroes.
spirit of defeat
When I need weapons I firts grind the collectors, and replace them slowly with greens/golds.
Cirian
Collectors are great. I use a mix of golds and collector weapons on my characters; some of the collector/crafter weapons are very cool items because they either have a nice skin, a cool particle effect or both.
There's also a good choice of maxed stats on collector weapons that make them appealing.

Red Sonya
Well if anet hadn't started making everything good drop like candy collectors items would still be useful and valueable. I remember back in the days of Prophecies just getting a 15^50 w/enchanted sword or axe was a godsend. Finding a perfect anything was a godsend. Now stuff like that is so easy to get or make it's not even worth farming anymore really for anything. +30hp mods used to be like 30k now you can get them a dime a dozen for 1k many times. I've gotten so many +30hp staff heads and wrappings for 1k or 2k it's not even funny anymore. I remember when those things were god items.
So, yeah most collector gear is worthless anymore. There's a few wands out there worth collecting for Air heroes (blind bots) and I collected a few ankhs for my monks with +12e +10% recharge spells and +30hp features. But, really if you have any mind and time about you at all you can get Greens for your heroes pretty easily or just buy them for
2k - 5k.
Collecting and practically anything else in the game is a dead feature now anyways. Only thing really left to do is just farm zashien points for keys (there's another way to get tons of easy loot to improve yourself or your heroes). I get 50 keys a week easy on the average and the zashien chest is really better for getting items than the puny drops you get in PVE now.

Yep, like others, when I read this thread, I was sucked into the past where there was only Proph. Then, they were relevant.
Now, as mentioned, it's so fast to level a character, and get to the areas where most items drop have inscription slots and are inscribable. Add in chest running, weekend events where you farm raptors/vaettirs, and there's a huge influx of max gold inscribable r9 weapons + perf mods, and you can make whatever you want. Also, all the /bonusitem starting with Factions and the insanely versatile Hourglass Staff. After 4 years of playerbase accumulations, collectors have not a whisper of the relevance they originally had. I'm inclined to say that's a good thing -- there are more ways to get what you want. That said, there's a nostalgic quality to having to work to earn something, with the work being proportional to the reward.
I remember when if you could salvage off a +5e staff head, that was 1 minute of spamming in ToA to get an easy 20k. For 2-3 years I haven't even bothered salvaging them off if I wanted to merch the skin.

They're great for new characters or those on a budget. Perfect mods on max gear all at req 9 without farming greens constantly (and guys with prophs only are really limited in the greens they can get without buying from other players). Why get rid of it? Good for heroes too if you don't want to spend the time looking for mods for 25 heroe's weaps.
