Coming back?
Dreakon
I used to play a while back (around the time Factions was released), I'm thinking about giving Guild Wars another spin though. A few things on my mind before I go through any installing/updating/buying more expansions stuff, if I may...
1. Players - Are the original Prophecies areas, especially the lower level areas, pretty much deserted at this point? If so, I may be willing to dredge through it if the rest of the game is populated enough. Is the game practically deserted or anything? Thoughts? :P
2. Guild Wars 2 - Is it pointless to come back to Guild Wars 1 when theres already been talks and things going for the sequal? Seeing as the original game is probably pretty deserted from some expansions, I imagine any money or effort I put into GW1 will be for nothing since when GW2 comes out, GW1 will pretty much crumble and die. Am I close?
Lol, sorry, honestly I don't like the ideas of sequals for completely multiplayer games like this. It just kills the original and forces us to spend more money (both on the game and maybe new PC hardware depending on the requirements). Bleh... The Economy!!

While you won't be able to transfer any characters, money, or items over to GW2 from GW1, many accomplishments you make in GW1 (like titles, acquiring certain weapons, and elite armor sets) will unlock certain special bonuses in GW2, so if that's the kind of thing you're into, then I'd say it's worth your time.
Besides, with GW2 likely slated for a beta sometime next year at the earliest, you've got plenty of time before it "crumbles and dies."

I see people going through Prophecies. May depend on time of day. I would suggest starting with Nightfall. Finish Nightfall, get a full set of heroes and skills. Then you can go through Prophecies in style. You don't need pick up groups anymore.
Guild Wars 2 is still a long way off. ANet is putting a bit of money into GW at this time, so there is still plenty of time to play.
I personally don't think GW will wither and die when GW 2 comes out. It will continue on for at least three to five years after that. GW 2 will be enough different from GW that they will be two different games, not merely a sequel situation.
It is in ANet's financial interest to have two major online games rather than just one. Go figure.

1) Depends on the time and the districts in which you play. Some people still are in the nnewbie areas but they're doing Hard Mode. Your best bet for playing with nice/intelligent people would be to get a decent guild and see what they talk about on their own forums.
2) See this link to the Hall of Monuments. Yes, GW is worth playing if you're interested in GW2.

1. Kinda, lot's of areas are empty mainly because people are spreaded throughout the 3 continents. Not that the game is deserted.
2. GW2 is still a looong away ahead, there's still a 1-2 years waiting until we see it, at this point there's not any sort of info other than what was announced a couple of years ago. There's still plenty of time.

1) Population is spread thin except few places, but soon we will have mission/boss dailies, so certain areas will be overpopulated again
2) Accomplished GW 1 veterans will get bling bling in GW2.

Well, my biggest concern with Guild Wars 2 is that I'll get hooked to Guild Wars again and it'll come out and my computer won't be able to handle it. Or it'll just barely manage. I know that no requirements are out yet obviously, but I worry lol. It won't matter what I do in Guild Wars if the sequal is a monster, I don't have a lot of money and still probably won't until I'm through college.
I'd love to see them continue to support Guild Wars 1 when GW2 is out. Not just keep it online, but release more expansions and big content updates, etc. Enough to keep plenty of people sticking around. I don't see that happening though...
So, ANet doing stuff for GW1 still to keep it interesting? Someone mentioned mission/boss dailies. Anything else? :P
Ooh, and PS. What outposts/towns are most populated currently in Prophecies and/or the other chapters and expansions and whatnot? Wanna know what to look forward to!

Come back!
This games still good, just play it for a bit and see if your still having fun. GW1 is still active , no matter what some people are trying to say. People think the whole point is to earn some un - announced extras in gw2 but unlike them i still play for fun and will still be playing when gw2 is out. Besides no one knows when they plan on releasing that game anyway.
BTW get yourself a nice guild, alot of people still play the original games.
there have been many huge updates such as HARD MODE which brings alot of people back to the original. There is also with the release of nightfall, heroes...these are customisable henchman people can bring into the missions. Its guild wars 4th birthday this month and with taht they are bringing many new updates too. The Dailey quests you mentioned are one of those which do seem to get everyone interested in the game more.
I recommend picking up Nightfall and playing that through and then onto the eye of the north. Each game is pretty good especially first time and has many different features.

If you need somebody to play through prophesies with, just pm me if I happen to be on...prophesies is definitely worth playing through again...I have fond memories of those missions (that I played as a nub ele, where I died multiple times to simple things)...

1, Well in my point of view if you look at the time I began playing (dec2005) and now (april2009) yes guildwars is pretty deserted, and I don't think its worth it to dredge trough prophecies because the end game of prophecies isnt much, your better of starting your character in Nightfall.
2,I don't think the HoM will be much of an advantage for veteran guildwars players in Guildwars 2 , I think you will get some special mini pets and armor pieces like destroyer gloves or chaos gloves stuff like that.

I have a perma-pre char and I run into plenty of new people every time I play. I think some people are just sour grapes from playing this game 4 years. You have had a good break, there will be loads of new content and enjoyment for you.
