What are your thoughts on guild spamming?

I'm getting somewhat tired of seeing people who continue to spam local channel when they continue recruit dialogs in 10sec or less. Maybe some people worry too much that "potential recruits" are going to be missed out on but it's a major pain in the @$$ when you have to continue scrolling local chat just to catch up on what others are saying, so seriously recruiters do need to be more respectful and knock it off.
This makes me wish Anet had a policy in place to keep it in trade where it belongs.

The system for advertising for new guild recruits is flawed. As well as the trade system, but thats another topic.
Could be fixed, but we know thats not likely to happen.

The problem isn't that there's recruiting going on in local chat, it's n00bs who think that they're going to have better luck getting people to join their guild by being obnoxious pains in the butt.
The bottom line is this: Whether it's flooding local chat with the same recruitment message every 10 seconds or spamming trade messages, there's a /report feature for dealing with the problem.
(hmmm... seems like I've said similar things about the same issue on these forums before.... must be de ja vue all over again!)

if its spammed...then /report
if its not spammed... then its not a problem

Yes it is flawed but they are supposed to be using that group function for trade/lfg but as always for 4 years, in one ear and out the other.

I find myself turning off local chat when passing through places like kamadan. But if your trying to talk to people using local chat...Then thats not good.

There are systems that could be put in place to make recruitment and trading easier for everyone and would easily reduce spam. A Marketplace or bulletin board could do this. Those aren't things that are going to be added to GW with any swiftness, and the spam is hardly an issue in comparison to other things, such as game balance.
Alleji
It's fine.
If anything, it's problem #926 on the list of things that need to be fixed in GW.

It's pretty annoying but tolerable for me. I tend to mock the spammers then they stop spamming and flame me. Good Times....

Spaming guild invite...
Well, I think that there are few guilds on GW that are more guilty of spaming than others. The main law breakers seem to be KISS, Yarr, NiTe, TWD and a few others. I think the reason for this is based on the fact that these guilds work on numbers, they need tons of people always. But what annoys me just as much as the guild spamers are the local yuts that always seem to fight with recruiters making for long periods of QQ and mean things typed in #local.
Personally, I never recruit in any town i spend time in...don't poop where you sleep you know

turn all chat off and talk in pms or make a team for team chat or move towns or....nvm, just QQ ;-)

How else do you expect people to recruit members to their guild? Party Search? Not a lot (well, from my observation) look into it often, if at all. Unless you're in Kamadon and need to find that specific item(s) to buy, or in a PvP arena looking for teams.
Bottom line is there is nothing else that is effective as continuously posting your guild in all chat. To turn that down for the purpose of peace in the chat window is unrealistic.

It pretty much is the only way to recruit.
Spiritz
If its done right - say every 20 secs then its not too bad but when its every few secs its bad - specially when in a quiet outpost.
Worse if you get a recruitment fight with 3 or more guilds spam recruiting then its bye bye local chat.
What they should do is set recruitment when u can only say it once in an outpost and it will show in a recruiting section and maybe once it sends it to all dists. That may cut down slightly on it.
But wont stop it bein spammed really in local chat.
Or even set a special npc in outposts that holds a list of guilds recruiting and who to contact - when that chr leaves outpost his advert is removed ( similar to first idea )

I honestly don't care. Doesn't bother me. Would rather see more important things attended to - making spirits viable in PvE, fixing Spawning Power, 7-hero parties, etc.

It's not like they have an option, right? I mean, what we need here is a massive, Guild Wars-dedicated forum with a section for Guild recruitment.

It's nice to see that there are still players that want to do things with other players. May it be playing or just communicating.

I keep local chat turned off 90% of the time because otherwise the actual conversations I'm trying to have (teamchat/whispers ftw) get lost in the sea of guild spam and random blathering.
To be honest I really don't care, though it does get a bit tiresome when it's the same person advertising constantly. And when every message on local is from the same person when they're in Kamadan AD1...then they're really overdoing it.

last I checked the party window had a section in it For guild recruitment, people neeed to learn how to use it. I just report them the same way I report any other spaming jerk

The problem with the party menu is that you can only fit like 1/3rd a sentence in there, and people not trading generally don't look at it.
They need to fix the problem at the source. You simply can't fit enough in the party search for it to be very useful. A lot of times, it's hard for trading even...
The recruitment spam is annoying, yes. But, they don't have many successfully viable alternatives at the moment. Hardly anyone checks recruitment sections on forums, almost nobody checks the party search trying to find a guild.
I do think the spam side of it is certainly uncalled for. Those that say their message once and then hop districts and aren't back for a minute or so are absolutely fine...

I don't care more than that.

It's annoying when they go Spammatron on main chat, there should be a separate channel for it, with maybe a minutely mention in main saying "4 Guilds recruiting atm!" or something
But the guilds who spam against themselves surely aren't doing their guild any favours by acting like retards

I have seen some recruiters who spam the message every 30secs or so whilst talking to people which i have no problem with at all.
On the otherhand I have been chatting in town when one decides that spamming every 2.1315 seconds is the best way to recruit someone and that just gets on my tits and earns them a /report.
My tolerance level is somewhere inbetween

I can describe my opinion on guild spamming with merely one word: fun.

Anyone who isn't a complete idiot would realise they're being desperate. Complaining will only get you into an argument with them (but hey, if you like that shit go for it, I'm not stopping you).

As a way for me to enjoy playing GW, I bounce around helping people with missions, quests and dungeons. (as several people on guru have found out.) Not running it while you are AFK, but helping people fight their way through.
It is amazing how often I end up helping KISS and YaRR members, and I always ask them why their guild/alliance isn't assisting. The answer is always the same, they can't get help in their alliance.
As far as being "the only way to recruit", BS! Nothing wrong with helping people and if they want an invite great, if not, no big deal either. this method has worked for 4 years for us and we are still going strong. This also generally results in higher quality members.
I guess it's all a debate on quantity versus quality. I will take 150 or so members that that actually play together, enjoy it, and are "good" people than 1000 members that hate each other. But, to each his own.

Hehe...you do have a point, but, sad but true, it's still amazing how few people in Guild Wars regularly use or even are aware of guildwarsguru.com or guildwars.com for that matter.

I don't like this kind of spamming. It's more irritating than an offensive guildname.
Can we /report those who spam their message every 10 seconds?

that made me lulz thank you
Yeah, but then again not all the players in Gw have a guru account, or know of its existence.
I usually turn off local and trade chat soon as I hit Kamadan or Lion's Arch

As much as I dislike guilds using all chat to recruiting, I can't really blame them for it. Until I see the same guild over and over with only one or two other people chatting between them. I can that spamming. Do I report it, I did once, for a member of KISS in pre. Four recruiting notices in as many seconds, he deserved it.
If an officer in my guild uses all chat to recruit, he would not be in my guild for long.

I have never, ever been able to recruit a person using Guru, Wiki or the party channel (too short messages), sorry great ideas but they don't work. When your in a huge alliance that farms faction for example keeping your members up is key. The only way to really get your guild out there is in all chat.
That being said there is a difference between spamming and recruiting. Its spamming when all you see down your chat window is guild ads and no chat. Its no spamming when the guild message comes up every, 30 secs or so. The problem with Kamadan is people dont know how to turn off the trade channel so they think their messages are getting lost in the trade when in reality 90% of ppl have trade off and see a wall of guild recruiting text.
Solution? IMO the best thing that can be done is extending the party window message size. You can only fit in like 20 or something characters. If this gets extended people will being to look for guilds in party much the same way people use it to find stuff to buy in Kamadan.
edit: just checked there are 2 ppl viewing the guild recruitment section atm ...... hardly the exposure a large guild needs.

I'd rather take some spam into account if that means that players might end up playing with eachother. Sure it could be taken down a notch - but like I said, it really doesn't bother me much.

They should have a Guild Channel or even better yet, have Quest/Mission/Trade/Guild WALLS, where everything gets posted. Yeah, I know, kinda nuts, but for trading and looking for guilds, it doesn't hurt to throw those together. It would also be helpful to have a search feature for Trades or Guilds. Why would you want to look at ads for the other side of Luxon/Kurzick? And it would help to see only WTB or WTS one at a time unless you want to be competitive with price.
Nimble Night
There 'could' be a channel for guild advertising. But then you need to think how useful it would actually be. Think about where you see these advertisements. I'd wager very rarely outside of Kamadan. In which case it poses the question why do you need local chat free anyway? People are just there to sell stuff. If it bothers you so much move to a less populated district.
JASON626
you already have the ability to uncheck local chat, nothing really intelligent goes on there anyway. We've got the almighty suppression of spamming filter.
