Phishing Scam: Beware of Impersonators
Regina Buenaobra
We will never ask you for your personal information (such as your name, phone number, account names, etc. in the game. If someone approaches you asking for this information, do not provide it! Instead, please alert Support and provide the character name of the person who approached you.
We are receiving reports of a phishing scam in-game where a player pretends to be an ArenaNet staff member, and proceeds to ask players for personal information, such as account names and passwords, phone numbers, mailing addresses, etc. Remember: we will never ask you for your password or any of this personal information!
If you encounter anyone doing this, please contact Support and give Support their character name.

Gee, thanks for the news! ^^b Although I thought this has been going on since the first years of the game. Anyway, I appreciate the scams update none the less because it tells me that it's still going around and I should still be careful.
P.S.
Any scammer who asks for anyones personal or ingame info is a FAILURE. It's not like anyone will even talk to him, never mind giving him the info.
Which gives me an idea to suggest to everyone who sees a person trying to get the players' info. Just yell out FAIL! at it over and over again. All for the purpose of humiliation. You've got to report it too, of course.

This scam should be all too common by now for people to fall victim to it seriously.

It's more or less a warning for newer players or people who don't quite understand how a game like this operates.

common sense is the best protection from scamming

Its hard to believe people fall for these scams, but obviously they do. Thanks for the heads up.

Saying that is an insult to young naive kids everywhere... seriously I don't think even a little 11-year-old is going to buy this kind of thing. I have no clue how people STILL get scammed by these kinds of people.
Icy The Mage
Common sense suggests anyone without enough commonsense to realize they are being scammed will not know how to make money and are not worth scamming. :P

Pretty cool that you get paid to post stuff that has already been said about a million times before, Gina

Thank You for the heads up Regina Buenaobra

Im not surprised people fall for this, there's a lot of stupid people who play this game, I try and sell some stuff and then they go and ask if I want to buy what im selling of them.
People have trouble reading in this game and there's a lot of stupid kids who will believe anything.
However if someone gives out there personal info then it just proves how stupid they are and I got no time for stupid people.

Those things are always a joke.
This game is rated T (+13), isn't it?
How can anyone older than 13 years old fall for it?
Why would Anet ask for our info in-game when they have our mails?
And even if they had to do so for any VERY weird and improbable reason, why wouldn't they do so without the GM sign over their heads?
And why would they need to as for login information when they have in their hands the servers holding that information?

I guess some people haven't yet learned to distrust everyone.

There are people who will fall for stuff like this, there always is.
Nobody here of course - we're all far too clever, right?
So the important part of Regina's post is that we SEND REPORTS when we see anyone attempting the scam (instead of just laughing in their faces and moving on).

Put them all on the failboat and send it careening over a waterfail.

I was going to write a long tirade on how people who don't have this problem should help those that have it (and by "help" I mean more than point fingers and name them "idiots"), but for a change a picture will speak more than words:

Common sense is also a rare and luxurious commodity on the internet.
It's sad to hear that people fall to these pathetic attempts. |
I mean, people fall for the "I'm a Nigerian Prince" scams and stuff like that all the time in reality. Yes, we might look at that and do a facepalm and know it's a scam, but not everyone does. Some people are simply too trusting, or they think they couldn't fall for such a trick, or think they'll get something out of it, or, in the case of someone masquerading as a GM asking for info, think that they could be in trouble.
