hey. my internet is randomly dieing like every 10-20 minutes, and its getting pretty annoying. what could be causing this?

Reset modem (disconect from power supply wait 30 seconds reconnect) Shut down and reboot your computer system see if it helps

vista goes funky on my laptop when the router goes out so i have to reboot both

K, your ISP probably only allows one computer per connection. You'll have to call them and ask how you can setup multiple computers on one router.

can you change the ethernet cord ? if you can make sure it is good and not becoming brittle from cat chewing on it sepping on it being bent etc...
If it was your net card onboard you would get an error message in devise manager when it fails.
And if it was the router it would kill the other computer.
May want to run a virus program just to be safe. But I would think you would notice low performance.

tried 2 different Ethernet cords, problem didnt change. is there any chance a virus could be causing this?.. lol

Well the first thing I noticed (when I got one last year) was the hard drive went crazy and worked too hard for what it was doing. And then performance was slowed a lot. From boot to shut down everything slowed. And then later random internet pages mostly porn popped up on my screen when internet was open. The true calling of a virus.
You can always run a full system scan if you have a virus software (this takes along time) Make sure to update virus software 1st
You can even run it in safe mode if you wish that way it has no internet connection to hide in during the scan. Some will even stay in your windows folders so you need to shut of the system restore to scan them. (I do not advise shutting this off unless you are told to by someone more qualified then me. (Norton or manufacturer of your virus program))

Offending computer = whatever computer is giving you the problem.
Try hooking up your computer to a different port on the router.

Check that your router and/or your computer are not periodically "searching for a better connection". That can cause DCs.
Also, there are so many drivers in a computer, and they interrelate in so many ways, check that you have all the latest (or at least, workable) drivers for video, sound, and motherboard. One way to check this is to use "Windows Update" to see if there are any updated drivers for your hardware. These may not be the latest drivers, but they should work together. (IIRC, don't use the "Express" option in the update, as that only looks for updates to Windows - use the other option.)
