Profession bigotry?
Robbeh The Mad
Interesting thing happened to me this morning playing GW before class. I was hanging out in Shing Jea with my necro being social and having a very good time about it. According to the people I was talking to I was funny entertaining and a pretty cool guy. After a few mins I decided to switch to my warrior character and came back to Jea to talk and screw around with the same people and suddenly I when from funny and cool to “stupid warrior, YOUR (since 99% of GW players don’t know the difference between YOUR and YOU’RE) a n00b!”
That got me thinking. I was saying the same things, acting the same way, and doing the same things as I was with my necro. What was the difference and how much of it was due to the fact that I happened to be on a warrior toon? How many of these people have actually tried or been a warrior character and how much of is due to the fact that it’s in vogue to hate on warriors, I mean all the cool kids do it right?

It could be possibly one of these reasons:
1) People may still think warriors are lame yet not all are.
2) They may have thought your warriors' appearance was strange.
3) Disliked armor cus warriors (particularly males) are known for bad armor combos.
Best thing to do is shake it off and ignore it :P

Lemme guess; your necro was female and your warrior was male?

No one cares about the difference between your and you're. secondly, I don't think is profession biased, you must have said something a little different or what not or possibly the noob wasn't directed at you. Lastly, yes all the cool kids do it.

Your necro was female. Your warrior...was.....WAMMO.

Warriors are, by and large, the "stupid class" in that they draw the majority of idiots to play them. That said I don't believe all Warriors are retarded; there are plenty of intelligent ones. But Warriors do draw a lot of idiots, as do the other members of the holy trinity, Elementalists and Monks.
Fact of the game.

Let me guess, your warrior had un-dyed canthan armor ?
Oh and you were showing your helmet ?
Character customization + armor / dye and weapon appearance choices play a big role in how people act toward you.
The only thing I have to watch for as a warrior, is when I have a cute monk following me around in pvp - it freaks them out when I start ripping into an identical looking equally cute monk on the other team.
So I end up letting enemies go, or having the cute female ele kill them.

Stereotypes have some truths behind them, there are alot of run into large groups of enemy alone warriors and alot of dumbzos in that class. Just like there're alot of snobby savior complex monks. I usually judge after people say things though. Maybe you tried some new matterial or different kinds of jokes?

I have to admit, I see a male war and go "uck", but that's mostly a looks thing really (same goes for male monks, male NF necros, etc); I don't have much against them. Nor have I encountered much bias towards me (other than for some... controversial and occasionally questionable builds I run), and all my characters are female (2 of them eles, 1 rit, all casters except the para and derv). Well, I take that back. There was one idiot sin in the Echovald who was partying with me for a quest (I was running the necro in my avvy) until he started going "I'm gunna Raep uuuu." and I kind of said, "ummmm, NO", dropped him on Ignore, and mapped out. That was just an idiot being an idiot, though (wonder what he thought of my little mm mapping out at max minion capacity?)
Gotta say I do have a sin prejudice because they're another idiot attractor. When run well, they're great. The problem is that at least 60% of the sin population (mostly in PvE) isn't interested in acting like a sin, they're interested in running around looking like Naruto and trying to tank. And failing. Miserably. So I do tend to look down on them, a little. No verbal abuse in outposts, though, really, just a tendency to avoid them in PUGs wherever possible. And it's not like I haven't met good sins. In the guild I used to be in there was one guy who was a really great sin, ran with us a lot. And I once met a very clever sin who saved the entire party from wiping during Cap Son (she was maybe level 17?) by solo tanking all the Crimson Skull - and this was before SF was big; she was staying alive through well-applied monk enchants and a couple of Shadow Arts skills.
So yeah, moral of the story: what prof bias there is is the result of a large population of stubbornly clueless people ruining a profession's rep for everyone else.

Not everyone pays attention to other characters in towns. I've had all sorts of conversations with folks in towns without ever having any idea where they were standing, much less what profession they were.
Was what you said upon your return the sort of thing that could be taken a few different ways, especially when coming from a name that hadn't been involved in the latest conversation? Sarcasm is a lot harder to convey in text.
Are you sure all the people you were talking to saw that you were a Necro rather than just the name they saw in Local chat? Are you sure all the people calling you names upon your return as a Warrior were indeed the same people and that they saw you were a Warrior? Maybe the group you'd been chatting with started to disperse once you left, so when you got back there was a new mix of folks chatting in Local.
Sorry, but from your story, there are way too many variables to say even that it's likely the shift was due to your profession.
To answer the general question though, no I don't think there's an overwhelming bias against any class. Then again, I have almost never PuG'ed in all my years of playing. On rare occasions, I've joined up with someone because of their writing in Local chat. On many occasions, I've avoided people because of their writing in Local chat. But as others have mentioned, that's based on what they say rather than any particular profession.

Yeah, if people in Guild Wars think you are female everything you say is important and hilarious. As soon as you appear to be a male your privledges are taken away.

I have never experienced this kind of bias.
Then again, all my chars are female and don't walk around in ugly armors. You'll never see my monk dressed in black obsi sporting chaos gloves and ninja mask. Same goes for my ele. My warrior wouldn't be seen dead in primeval+glads+chicken armor combo.
Most importantly, I do not engage in local chat discussions in American districts.

Male warrior isn't like female ele, you can't just use blue dyed istani... it's gotta be endgame items from multiple campaigns, dyed black / white / red etcetera, or else you're not only bad but obviously bad.
Basically if you put in absolutely no effort, you'll come out with a decent looking female character and a bad looking male character.
Also: I used to play a chick, and it's interesting because people definitely relate to you differently. It was nice at the time, but now that I play a sexy brightly colored male character I'd never ever go back.
+ side of playing a chick at one time is now I can usually tell someone's real gender.
Absolutely not. Customize your character better, spend 100k on armor dye it red, then say something clever...

I have played all professions apart from ritualist and I have put a lot of time into each profession so I know how each one plays and when all is said and done there's no such thing as a bad profession, there's just bad players.
I know that a lot of people look down on sins and that's because bad sins don't take skills that block attacks which is essential in tanking and staying alive.
However people who look down on certain professions are themselves noobs because it's unlikely they have played as that profession so they have no say in the matter.
As a player of over 3 years I tend to play the game on my own with heroes and avoid party's whenever I can because as an adult I have learned that over half the people on this game are immature kids who think there gods who can say and do whatever they want and get away with it so I avoid all talk in this game.
Also on a different note, have you ever seen that player who is always asking for a GF?
he has been doing for like 2 years now.

Maybe an exaggeration on my part, but I was just emphasising that being a female (or appearing as a female) in this game gets you quite far on it's own. And my characters are all very amazing to look at :3

Playing female has always been more of a response to not much going on, no groups to lead, no big active communities etc.
Although in the game where I played female, I hacked my armor so it had parts from the elvin campaign heroine, then hung out with real chicks. But it made my guy friends feel kind of weird.

Is this the dude in RA who is always asking for someone to be his online girlfriend? I thought it was a joke but I see him there quite a bit :(
Honestly, I really don't care if a dude rolls a female character, his choice not mine. But when they actively use it to gain advantages it's pretty annoying, especially when people actually go and help them just because they have a female character. The worst is when they continually try making *subtle* (Read: Incredibly Obvious) hints that they are female, for whatever reason they have.
Blargh.

I think it all boils down to kids getting online with gw - most teenagers are fine but somehow all the brattish arrogent ones always go warrior and then think their big men etc.
Also these kids are always the ones who
a. try and chat up any female toon
b. when finding out toon is actually a male char they decide to start up and offend that person.
( ps im not saying the op is any of the above ).
Men an women both use toon of the opp. gender but when us men do it - kids cant accept it.Im sure as hell they have played a game on xbox/ps2 etc where your forced to use a female toon and that doesnt bother them.
If your male and want to see how bad women have it from male - make a female toon and sit in an outpost - you dont even have to speak and you will get idiots tryin to chat you up or even worse making lewd comments.
Its a Role Play game for gods sake and there isnt a written rule stating you have to play your gender - if you kids dislike it either -
a. dont play
b. Dont go chatting up a toon or makin lewd comments unless you know them
c. Dont call ppl gay if using female toon - You`re the one whos tryin to chat them up not the other way round - Its you who`s in the wrong so accept it.
I seen quite a few ppl wanting gf`s and usually ppl do tend to tell them to stop for reasons of protection - you never know what type of person it is or how old.
I even think once part of an outpost reported someone as it was upsetting other players and very concerning.

99% of Warriors don't know how to play the profession well, including me. It's a refreshing turn to see one that can though. That is the source of your profession discrimination.

I go to Shing Jea and I would have loved you man, because I am also a wammo. Though..no one really says anything against me. I do get hit on, on my girl characters though, but with their names it's not surprising.
