Update - Thursday, April 23

Fourth Anniversary Update: Major Content and Feature Additions

Our goal for the Fourth Anniversary Update is to deepen and enhance replayability of the game with a variety of features aimed at satisfying the full spectrum of Guild Wars players. For example, we wanted to give new purpose and rewards to existing content, so we added a new system of cycling Zaishen Challenge Quests and the Traveler to encourage players to experience the different types of available content in a whole new light. We've also designed an elaborate unlocking system for every pet in the game, making it possible for you to accumulate unlocked pets and swap them out for different builds and gameplay types. As the demand on inventory space increases with all the new content being added to the game since our last storage update, we have increased your storage potential with the creation of Equipment Packs and additional Xunlai Storage panes available in the In-Game and NCsoft Stores. In the same vein, the Hall of Monuments has been made account-based to make the accumulation of titles and other accomplishments more smoothly available to multiple characters on an account. As you play these characters more and more, you might be looking for a way to freshen up their look beyond just getting a new set of armour, so we have added a whole new way to do this with Makeover Credits that have been added to the In-Game and NCsoft Stores. These Credits are redeemable at a [Stylist] NPC who deepens your ability to truly customize a character by allowing you to mix aesthetic features from ALL campaigns, something which is not possible through character creation.

The Live Team has been working non-stop to make these new features a reality, and we're incredibly happy to finally reveal everything we've done. Instead of releasing a typical Developer Update article, we're explaining all the exciting new content in a series of detailed gameplay web pages. You can find the links to those pages in the update notes below, as well as a summary of each updated game feature.

Read on for more information!

Equipment Pack

Each character has been given a 5th bag slot reserved for the Equipment Pack. These new bags will save you oodles of storage space and give you a way to keep your weapons and armor divided from your other loot. These bags:
Hold only weapons and armor.
Come in four sizes:
5-slot bags are available in Pre-Searing Ascalon in exchange for a treat for Professor Yakkington, for a nominal fee of gold at various merchants across all campaigns, or for Zaishen Coins at a new Zaishen Rewards NPC in Great Temple of Balthazar.
10, 15, and 20-slot bags are available in exchange for Zaishen Coins at a Zaishen Rewards NPC in Great Temple of Balthazar.

See the gameplay article for more details.

Xunlai Storage

To provide you with access to even more storage space, Xunlai Storage Panes are now available for purchase in the In-Game Store and the NCsoft Store.
Xunlai Storage Panes each add an additional 20 slots of storage space to your Xunlai Chest. These panes can be used by any character on your account that has access to your storage chest.
You can now purchase up to 4 additional panes of storage from the In-Game Store and the NCsoft Store.

See the Storage FAQ for more details.

Zaishen Challenge Quests

Every day, we challenge you with different objectives from all over the world, running the gamut from missions to bounties to PvP. Each day, these quests have you play in a specific area for each of the three formats. We believe this will encourage players to group up with those in the area attempting to complete this common goal of getting rewarded for that day's Challenge Quest. Zaishen Challenge Quests have a variety of rewards, including the new Zaishen Coins, a new form of currency taken by Zaishen Rewards NPCs.

Pick up your Zaishen Challenge Quests in the Great Temple of Balthazar.
Your Quest Log can only hold three of each type of Zaishen Challenge Quests.

Three quest types are offered each day:

Mission completion. Finish storyline missions for the Zaishen.
Bounties. Hunt down and kill evil bosses from around the world!
Combat. Battle it out in different arenas and triumph over other players.
Each quest has one Base Objective, which is required to complete the quest and rewards you with experience, gold, faction, title points, and
Zaishen Coins. Quests may also have one or more optional Bonus Objectives, which reward extra Zaishen Coins.

Zaishen Coins:

Come in copper, silver, and gold denominations.
Are only awarded for completing Zaishen Challenge Quests.
Are not tradeable to other players, but can be passed to other characters on your account through the Xunlai Storage Vault.

Can be used to buy items like the Equipment Packs from Zaishen Rewards NPCs in the Great Temple of Balthazar.

Can be used to unlock pets for your Zaishen Menagerie collection.

See the gameplay article for more details about Zaishen Challenge Quests and Coins.

Zaishen Menagerie

Arcane Mages of the Zaishen Order have been hard at work on the island of the Heroes' Ascent volcano. Terraforming magics learned from the hedge wizards of Vabbi have allowed the Zaishen to create a sanctuary and breeding ground for many of the charmable animals from around the world. They fund the sanctuary and their study of these animals by allowing adventurers to build their own collection of charmable animals to be cared for in the Menagerie Grounds. By unlocking a pet for your collection, you will then be able to recharm that tier of animal any time you wish by visiting the Zaishen Menagerie Grounds.

As part of this service, the Zaishen Trainers have developed evolutions of certain rare animals that have never been seen in the wild, and they've even recovered a small amount of extremely rare Moss Spider eggs to be trained as a charmable pet for the first time. The Moss Spider is best known for being native to Ascalon before the Searing, and until now was believed to be extinct.

The Zaishen Menagerie is an outpost, located in the Battle Isles next to Heroes' Ascent. Speak with Gate Guard Hirvela to enter the Menagerie Grounds.

All characters on your account share a Menagerie collection.
Unlock seven different tiers of level and evolution for every charmable animal in the game.

Unlock a pet by bringing your charmed animals to Emryd the Tamer, or visit Helena [Zaishen Keeper] to unlock them with Balthazar Faction or Zaishen Coins.

Only charmable animals from campaigns you own are unlockable via the Zaishen Keeper.

The menagerie is your own area--only you and your Heroes can enter.
Once you've unlocked a pet, you'll see charmable level 5 versions of that pet roaming the grounds. Higher-level versions and special evolutions of your pets are also available from Wynn [Zaishen Training Captain].
Purchase an unlock pack from our In-Game Store or the NCsoft Store. The unlock pack adds the non-prestige pets from all campaigns to your collection.

See the gameplay article for more details.

Nicholas The Traveler

The rumors aren't true, Nicholas Sandford survived the Searing! He may look a little aged since the last time you saw him, but Nicholas and his trusty companion, Professor Yakkington, are finally coming out of hiding. Having dropped his last name in favor of the moniker "the Traveler," Nicholas has mourned in seclusion over the loss of his family, friends, and beloved Mary Malone long enough. He has traveled the globe, gathering up a hefty supply of exotic and unique new items to put in his Gift of the Traveler, which he trades for materials, trophies, and other items he desires. Each week, Nicholas and the Professor will change location to a different explorable area in Tyria, Cantha, or Elona. In each location he will want something different for one of his Gifts. He is out there in the world right now; do you have the stamina to find him?

The Traveler changes location at the end of each weekend.
Each account can get up to 5 Gifts of the Traveler each week.
The Traveler gives his Gifts in exchange for the items he desires that week. The item he seeks will change depending on his location in the world.
Gifts of the Traveler hold many new and exclusive items, but you'll just have to open one to see what they are.

See the gameplay article for more details.

Hall of Monuments: Now Account-Wide

Our previously announced plans for the Hall of Monuments to be an account-wide feature have come to fruition, and then some!
Switch between your Character and Account views by speaking with Kimmes the Historian in the Hall of Monuments.
Added the ability to specify the displayed achievements for each monument.

Added the ability to replay the cinematic view of a monument.

Accomplishments will automatically be added to your account the next time you log in with any character that has a displayed an achievement in the Hall of Monuments.

See the gameplay article for more details.

New Character Customizations

The ability to change a character's look once created is a luxury we've never had. Now you will not only be able to freshen up the look of a character you have been staring at for years, but you'll actually be able to mix and match aesthetic features from all campaigns, giving you a multitude of new combinations that aren't available during character creation!

To prepare for this new feature, we've had to reorganize the way characters' appearance data is stored. As such, the first time you view your characters at the character selection screen, they won't look the way you remember them. Never fear! To update your character selection screen's display, you need only log in on each character, and they will be viewed correctly from here on out.

Preview your new look! Speak with Anatomical Engineer Llye [Stylist] in the Great Temple of Balthazar to check out all the options for redoing your character.

The Stylist allows you to mix and match aesthetic features from different campaigns, creating hundreds of combinations which are not available at character creation.

Change your character's hair style, hair color, face, skin color, and/or body scale with Makeover Credits, or all of those plus gender with Extreme Makeover Credits, at the Stylist.

Buy your Makeover Credits and Extreme Makeover Credits at the In-Game Store and the NCsoft Store. Makeover Credits are sold in packs of 5, and Extreme Makeover Credits are sold individually.

Each Makeover Credit allows you to change one character's hair style, hair color, face, skin color, and/or body scale.

Each Extreme Makeover Credit allows you to change one character's gender, as well as the Makeover options of hair style, hair color, face, skin color, and/or body scale.

Character Name Changes are now available at the In-Game Store and the NCsoft Store.

See the gameplay article for more details.

Bug Fixes

Fixed description for Piercing Trap

Trap. When Piercing Trap is triggered, all nearby foes are struck for 5..41..53 piercing damage. Any foes with Cracked Armor are struck for an additional 15..51..63 damage. Piercing Trap ends after 90 seconds. While activating this Skill, you are easily interrupted. (Attrib: Wilderness Survival)
so it no longer refers to Cracked Armor as "Cracked Armored".

Fixed description for Weapon of Warding (PvE)

Weapon Spell. For 5..9..10 seconds, target ally has a Weapon of Warding that grants target ally +2..4..4 Health regeneration and a 50% chance to block. (Attrib: Restoration Magic)
so it no longer inaccurately states that the skill ends if target ally attacks.
Fixed a bug that allowed players to bypass the 5 Gift account limit per day from Nicholas Sandford in Pre-Searing.

Fixed a bug which caused Red Iris Flowers to drop in Pre-Searing Ascalon with much less frequency than originally intended.

Miscellaneous

The Miniature Greased Lightning is now Green Rarity.
Charm Animal

Skill. Charm target animal. Once charmed, your animal companion will travel with you whenever you have Charm Animal equipped. (Attrib: Beast Mastery): changed functionality to "Charm target animal. Once charmed, your animal companion will travel with you whenever you have Charm Animal equipped. (Cannot charm animals 4 or more levels higher than you.)"

Details of the menagerie are as follows:

  • The menagerie is account-based, so pets unlocked by any PvE or PvP character will be available to any other PvE and PvP characters on the same account that have access to the Menagerie.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Zaishen Challenge Quests:

A major addition to Guild Wars will be the Zaishen Challenge Quests. There will be three different types of Zaishen Challenge Quests:
  • Zaishen Mission: Finish missions deemed high priority by the Zaishen. These are replays of campaign missions.
  • Zaishen Bounty: Eliminate bosses targeted by the Zaishen. These take you to various dungeons, veteran missions, and explorable areas.
  • Zaishen Combat: Triumph over other players or teams in various types of PvP combat.Examples include GvG, Random Arena and Alliance Battles.

Each day, a new quest of each type is available from the Great Temple of Balthazar.

You can complete these Zaishen Challenge Quests any time you wish; however, you can only have three in your quest log at any given time.

The most comprehensive strategy is to finish challenge quests the day you get them, so you free up space in your quest log for the next day's batch.

Quests can be done solo or paired up with a friend or larger group for co-op play.

You can find quest information daily from Guildwiki: http://guildwars.wikia.com/wiki/Zaishen_Challenge_Quest

Zaishen Coins:

Quote:
Due to a in-game bug, Zaishen Coins currently cannot be placed into storage. But there is plans to fix this.

Coins can be obtained by doing the following:

Mini-games

There are a number of mini-games you can play during event:

Shing Jea Boardwalk Games of Chance:

All games require Festival Tickets that may be purchased for 15 gold a piece. Tickets can be purchased from NPCs on the Shing Jea Boardwalk:
  • Rings of Fortune:
Costs 2 tickets to play, which are taken from you each round automatically when you stand in one of the 16 stone rings. Each round, the NPC called Pan counts down - 3... 2... 1... and then one of the stone rings is randomly chosen. An orange glow appears in that ring, and anyone standing in it receives 12 tickets. Horizontally/vertically adjacent rings to the one chosen emit a white glow, and anyone standing in them receives 3 tickets.

  • Nine Rings:
Costs 10 tickets to play, which are taken from you each round automatically when you stand in one of the 9 stone rings. Each round, the NPC called Teilah counts down - 3... 2... 1... and then one of the stone rings is randomly chosen. An orange glow appears in that rings, and anyone standing in it receives an amount of tickets decided by which ring it is. Corner rings give 55, side rings give 40 and the middle ring gives 25. Horizontally/vertically adjacent rings to the one chosen emit a white glow, and anyone standing in them receives 15 tickets.

  • Dragon Nest:
Costs 1 ticket to play, which is taken from you when you enter the playing area (talk to Ki Leung to do so). Up to 8 players can participate in each game which takes 4 minutes. The aim is to get as many points as possible by 'tagging' hatchlings (simply touching them). Black hatchlings give you 1 point. White hatchlings give you 2 points and cripple other adjacent players. Red hatchlings give you 0 points and knock you down on touching. There are 4 rounds in this game, and in the last round points are doubled.

Tip: When you play this game, you can select and tag the nearest hatchling by pressing 'v space'. Keep in mind that both normal and red hatchlings are called 'Hatchling', so you will need to take a look at what you're heading to before you get carried away with v-spacing.

Rollerbeetle Racing Guide - by Feathermoore Rep:

Basic Information:

The Rollerbeetle Racing Arena can be accessed by talking to the Rollerbeetle Trainers in Shing Jea Monastery, Kamadan, Jewel of Istan and Lion’s Arch.

Once inside the arena there are many NPCs that you can talk to in regards to Rollerbeetle Racing. The most notable NPCs are:
  • Kokusai [Beetle Designs] - For 100g, you can change the main design of your beetle. The possible options are:
  • Plain
  • Racing Stripe
  • Flames
  • Peace Love and Harmony
  • Tiger Stripes
  • Wing
  • Eyeball.
Note: That this does not change the colour of your beetle. The colour of your beetle is randomly assigned to you when you load into the arena or into a race. The random colours include green, blue, cyan, yellow, purple/pink and red.

  • Eldrid the Ancient [Records] - This NPC lists all the daily, monthly, and quarterly records.
  • Little Jack [Rewards] - Little Jack is holding prizes for the 100 best Rollerbeetle Racers, to be given out after the festival. The prize is a Miniature Greased Lightning.
  • Rollerbeetle Master [Rollerbeetle Racing] - Will transport you back to the last town you entered the arena from.

Rollerbeetle Skills:

Your skill bar is replaced with the fixed skill set below:

1. Rollerbeetle Dash: For 5 seconds you move extremely fast.
2. Harden Shell: For 4 seconds, you cannot be knocked down.
3. Ram: Skill, For 2 seconds, all adjacent foes are knocked down.
4. Distracting Lunge: All of target Rollerbeetle's Skills are temporarily disabled for 5 seconds.
5. Spit Rocks: You spit (3) rocks at target Rollerbeetle. If they hit, that target is knocked down.
6. Rollerbeetle Echo: For 20 seconds, this Skill is replaced with the next skill that you use. Rollerbeetle Echo acts as this skill for 30 seconds.
7. Rollerbeetle Blast: Target Rollerbeetle is knocked down.
8. Super Rollerbeetle: For 10 seconds, you move extremely fast and can not be knocked down.

Skill Notes:
  • In order to use the skill Spit Rock, you must have line of sight to your target. Otherwise you will get a obstruction message and your attack will missed.
  • If you use Rollerbeetle Echo and run over an additional box, there is a slight chance that you may randomly get Echo again. However, Echo will not be refreshed. Also if you have used Echo completely and run over another box or enter a checkpoint, the Echoed skill will not recharge.

Racing Basics:

  • In the race, you compete against 5 other players until everyone finished or time runs out. There is a set time limit of 3 minutes to complete the race.
  • Each player starts out with 600,000 points and the points decrease by 1,000 every second.
  • At the start of the race, everyone has the skills Rollerbeetle Dash, Harden Shell, and Ram available. Once these 3 skills have been used, they will not be recharged until the next checkpoint.
  • Overall there are 7 check points during the course of the race.
  • During the race there are boxes marked with a (?) power-up box. Running over these boxes randomly unlock one of the other 5 skills for a one time use. After the box has been run over, the box will re-spawn approximately a second later.

Race Maps and (?) Box Locations:

The Starting Gates

You cannot use any skills till the race begins. You can however begin moving about to build some initial speed:

Race Path

The Main route is marked in red. The green paths denote alternate paths, usually to a bonus box. The blue bars signify where the path crosses itself:

(?) Box Locations

There are 19 boxes that can be found on the map:

Rewards:
  • First place receives 7 Victory Tokens and 7 Gamer Points.
  • Second place receives 5 Victory Tokens and 5 Gamer Points.
  • Third place receives 3 Victory Tokens and 3 Gamer Points.
  • Fourth place receives 2 Victory Tokens and 2 Gamer Points.
  • Each other Player will also receive 1 Victory Token if they reach the end of the track.
  • You also earn 50 Balthazar Faction for Consecutive Wins and for Flawless Victories.

Tips and Tricks:
  • If you roll about around in the starting gate just before the start of the race, this will help generate a small amount of momentum to help your beetle get moving.
  • To avoid getting knockdown at the start, put up Harden Shell as soon as you exit, or even a few seconds after.
  • Also use Ram or Rollerbeetle Dash combined with Harden Shell, to put yourself in the front.
  • Conserve your skills! Don't always use that Dash as soon as it recharges. Sometimes, its better to use your speed boosts at strategic times, like after a knockdown or at the bottom of a hill.
  • Be wary of other players. Use the "c" button and "tab" to keep track of people closest to you. These buttons allow you target the other players to see what skills they use. For example, if someone is on your tail, target then to make sure they don't sneak up and use Ram while you don't have Harden Shell up.

Dragon Arena 6x6 (Dodgeball):

To travel to the Dragon Arena invisible outpost, simply speak to Captain Li Sah in the middle courtyard of Shing Jea Monastery. Captain Li Sah can also be found in the middle circle in the Great Temple of Balthazar too.

In this arena, two randomly formed teams of 6 battle against each other. The first team to reach 20 kills wins.

When you enter a battle in the Dragon Arena, you have 'Spirit of the Festival' on you. This takes your health to 100 and your Armour to 60. All your attributes are set to 0 and you cannot attack.

Therefore even if you HP is higher or lower then 100, it will be adjusted to 100 no matter what armour you are wearing.

In the arena every player has the same 8 skills on their skill bar:
  • Dragon Blast: No cost. Casting time = 1 second. Recharge time = 5 seconds.
Skill. Send out a projectile that kills target foe if it hits.
  • Imperial Majesty: No cost. Casting time = 3/4 second. Recharge time = 10 seconds.
Skill. Target touched foe kowtows before you and takes 50 damage. (Target is knocked down and takes damage)
  • Trade Winds: No cost. Casting time = 3/4 second. Recharge time = 5 seconds.
Skill. For 10 seconds, you move with the swiftness of the Canthan fleet. (Best guess is +33% speed)
  • 5 Resurrection Signets

Luna Silverwood Launches a Dragon Blast attack in the Dragon Arena

General Tactic:

It's Dodgeball. Strafe while under the Trade Winds skill (Speed Boost). Stop just long enough to cast your one-shot kill on a good target. Kiting is the key to success.

Recommended Tactic:

The following is a working tactic for this arena:

The best tactic is to stand back and pick a target, then use Trade Winds to rush in and Dragon Blast them, and run out again. At this point you will be able to resurrect any dead allies, but consider their position. It is easy for an enemy to Dragon Blast the resurrected person before they can do much. Imperial Majesty can be useful when you are close to an enemy. Very often in the Dragon Arena you will experience lag after being hit by Dragon Blast (your death will be delayed by a few seconds but you will be stuck).

Dead players are resurrected at their team's shrine every 30 seconds.

Beware if your team is wiped its very common for resurrection point camping to take place. But resurrected players are invincible for a short period of time, so use it to your advantage for a comeback!

In turn the opposing team are recommend to stay back away from the resurrection point of the other team, as attacking for the first few seconds is pointless.

Rewards:
  • You get 3 Victory Tokens as a reward for winning.
  • You also gain 40 Balthazar Faction points per unique kill, as well as 50 Faction points per team win.
  • Each five consecutive wins you gain an additional 50 faction.
  • 5 points toward the Gamer title track.

RTSFirebat needs your Help!

It’s going to be a event and of course I want to get some event game play in myself, so as always I'm requesting the public to officially help out!

What is needed?

You can help me by sending a forum Private Message with any of the following:

  • Pictures and information about new items
  • Information and pictures of any in-game bugs found during the event
  • Any pictures of interesting locations such as towns, NPCs etc... If I like them I'll add it into the guide
  • Information, pictures and better yet how-to guides for any of the mini games
  • Information on quests or missions during the event.

Guidelines:

Take the following into account before sending me a Private Message:

  • I won't accept screenshots with user interface stuff like health bars and skills bars blocking things.
  • Don't send massive 1024 x 1280 (or along those lines) images, please resize them to 800 x 600.
  • All information must be accurate and clear. Nothing made up or speculation.

----------------------

All submissions will be of course credited in the Contributors section. The important thing is to PM (Private Message) me the information, as I won't have the time to read tons of posts in the guide thread looking for it.

Thank you, happy gaming
