My family has been playing gw (almost) since it came out, mom dad sister brother and myself. We played it pretty seriously, and have just started getting back into it. It's my dad's favorite game, and probably will be for a very long time.

So his birthday (41st) came around and I made him a wallpaper of the family's characters. I also sent it in for a 11x17 Metallic Paper print. He really liked it.

http://img9.imageshack.us/img9/5061/finaldadsbd.jpg <-- full image.

I enhanced each character in little ways to make it more fun to look at.

I gave myself some subtle white smoke (didn't want to add much). I made it seem as if my sister's character's armor had glowing properties. My dad's favorite bow in the whole game has always been the SB skin, so I added a little storm effect to it. My mom's character I just did some magic looking additions... and my brothers character on the far right, black smoke.

Overall it took me a good amount of time. I still wanted it to be simple, so I didn't add too much going on.

Just wanted to share.

Hope you guys like it.

Thats pretty cool, i like how you have swapped the hand that holds the weapon for one of each of the rangers and the warriors. The snow -> Desert is also a nice touch.

PS: What is the name of the weapon the mesmer is holding? I WANT that skin.

Looks great. The simplicity works well for what you were trying to accomplish and the minor brush-ups look pro.

Where did you get your renders?

Don't know what item the mesmer is holding, but I think the purple glowing lines on it are the "magic looking additions" the creator added.

Where did you get your renders? Thanks! All renders are ingame, cut out and edited by myself. The guild logo was hand drawn (no high res logo out there) and the GW at the top was spliced from a gw fan web kit.

Very, very nice wallpaper - everything flows well, doesn't look like random screenies were jammed together or anything.

Also, I'm jealous of your family! *must convince kid cousins to get in the game - pretty sure I don't want my parents playing *

EDIT: Oh, and you might want to look into making these on commish... I'd certainly be interested.

That's an awesome wallpaper if I do say so myself! :P

If you want to involve your family in at least participating here's what you do. Just talk to them. Tell them the truth, that yes, while gaming gets a "nerdy" rap, it is important to you, it's fun! And it would mean the world if your parents spent just at least a small amount of time with you guys doing something you enjoy. As a parent myself, I know first hand that when kids ask you to spend time with them, it is an opportunity that we should never pass up.

Hope that helps.

I had my mom create a character one day while she was visiting, just to get an idea of what online games are like. She made an assassin. It was kinda fun explaining really simple mechanics to someone who had no previous knowledge of it (her gaming experience is mostly limited to puzzle games). I would say, "Okay, you've made it through your training now, you're in a town and these people moving around are other real people like you. What do you want to do?" She was just blown away.

Thanks for all the kind words everyone!

It's a shame that most older people have such a hard time getting into things like Guild Wars, or any other game. I find it to be a pretty valid pass time activity. Even more so, an excellent form of entertainment.

About the commissions! I'll have to think about it.

My image editing time and skills usually go towards freelancing, but maybe it would be a good thing to sharpen up on the side for you guys. So I might start one up.

I hope that you do begin taking commissions. I had a great time doing mine and it's a great way to learn. People will give criticism, but even the roughest criticism has truth to it and it can help you see what people see that haven't been staring at the picture for hours. Your picture here looks really good, so if you make any improvements at all this way, you have a bright future ahead.

Side note for people with parents that don't know much about online gaming, I've been playing a game recently that I think parents could easily get into and I am thinking of showing it to my mom. It's called Free Realms. There is fighting, but you don't have to fight if you don't want to and it's easy button-mashing when you do. A large part of the game is in minigames and puzzles, but it is a good way to get someone familiar with quests and traveling between towns. There's even a trail marker that pulses on the ground to let you know exactly where to go for your quest. Get them familiar with this and then make them play with you in GW2

925bytes a second??! D'awh, I really want to see it. XD

Very sweet of you. Is there much quarreling between you guys? :P Back when I got my ex boyfriend to play, we used to have the most petty arguments over GW. Good times. XD

@StarrTheInsane: Great advice! These types of wallpapers do take a while, so I think I'll only do a few full blown character wallpapers. Others I feel will have to be either single or double. Maybe even forum signatures if people are into that (even though I know this website doesn't go along)

@Zan: hahaha, thanks!

@eeks: There used to be, all of us would kind of get into it. ESPECIALLY if we lost a longish missions. "You don't know how to play your warriors" "You're a bad ranger" "Why don't you use your keyboard numbers for healing", etc. Nothing too serious, things you could laugh about 20 minutes later. I've gotten my girlfriend into GW too, and I know what you mean. The little things are what causes the frustration.

Like not healing me when I'm dying, and trying to explain to her why she needs a new build. Or why I don't pick up whites anymore. It's amazingly fun playing with her and my family, though. I even have a younger cousin playing with us most of the time, but that's another story.

Anyways I got a good picture of the print for anyone that's interested.

I ordered from nationsphotolab, pretty high quality stuff. Of course I did most of the work and had to blow up the image to a pseudo 300dpi, but the print and metallic paper is really nice. Great pricing too, for any of you pondering about it.

That turned out great! Which mounting did you use for that one? I may use this service for some of my prints, they look like they have very reasonable prices. Thanks for the tip! Oh and on the subject of sig bars, even though we can't use them here, alot of people use them on their guild forums.
