GW2 Pre-order on Amazon? (with release date)

Um....can anyone tell me why Amazon has a release date set for GW2 and you can already pre-order it?
Seems a little strange. Has this already been discussed elsewhere?

Amazon doesn't charge until it ships, but at least they have your money when it does.
i still think we wont see gw2 till 2011

That's not an official release date. That's an estimate made by Amazon.com as a place holder. As always, don't trust an online retailer to have 100% accurate information about release dates before we have even issued a press release on the official site.

Amazon i hate to say are quite unreliable on release dates

So....if they miss by....oh, let's say around a year, what are they planning on doing? Just keeping the money until release? If so, that's hilarious.

These threads have been poping up a lot lately (search FTL!), but I don't think it means anything.

They'll happily take your money and give you nothing(until the game releases) in return if you allow them to.

Typically the amazon pre-order placeholder dates are significantly early, sometimes by as much as a full year. It's rare that I've seen them ever be listed as later than the actual date. If that holds true, we'll hopefully see GW2 by no later than 12-31-2011
Hanging Man
Yeah Amazon doesn't seem like the most trust worthy site for GW2 info

The release date is a true date I think. They had talked with ncsoft on 100%. How do they know price? If they didn't talked be the game will be cheaper they will lose money, don't think they would do it.

Interesting, but hardly to be taken as gospel truth. Amazon is a very "iffy" source, besides Regina has already debunked it for us. The release date stated there is Dec. 31 2010, come on guys, don't you think that the game would be released prior to that.... for the mega XMAS sales profits if nothing else. I predict that IF GW2 is out in 2010 it will be at a more sales appropriate time than that. :P

The place holder date indicates Amazon are expecting a 2010 release date, hence December 31st being the last day of 2010.
I'd happily put money on GW2 being released next year, especially after reading that IGN interview with Mike O'Brien stating the GW team has a lot of fun playing GW2 every Wednesday.

I'm sure the Anet team was enjoying GW1 every Wednesday back in 2002 (before the 2003 alpha). It's very difficult to say when GW2 will be out, not only from the perspective of development (are they talking about the PvE side? PvP side? incomplete game world that they are slowly testing probably...), but also from the marketing side where there's a bigger picture to take into account (other NCsoft games, other competitors).

Actually, most of it is.

Anyway, estimated placeholder - as everyone already said. It's set "TBA" for 2010/2011 - so by the time the set date is reached, we'll probably have an actual release date.

I'm pretty sure I read somewhere they are building off Guild Wars 1 engine. But don't quote me on it.
CyberMesh0
That can only go so far- the reason they started GW2 in the first place was because GW's engine had some limits that they felt held back by.
shoyon456
I can't say whether or not I think Amazon calls the date too far ahead or too soon. However to say that GW2 will be in Q3 or Q4 would be a fail on their part.
Judging by their current Blizzard-like route, we won't have a release date until the game is stocked or on shelves imo.

It wasn't the engine that had limitations, it was the designers expanding functionality and classes with each new game that they felt was unsustainable.

It always helps to read all the posts before you reply. xD
Back then
I really can't imagine GW2 comming out in 2011. I know Anet isn't a big company, but they certainly have funding not only from the sales of regular guild wars games, but from investors and NCSoft. I'm sure they have a very competent, full-time development team. I'd even go as far to say that the basic gameplay elements of GW2 are already complete, and that development is shifting into an alpha-type phase where they tweak certain things, and are working on creating maps, missions, and other content like that.
With that being said, I would absolutely expect a release no later than 2nd quarter 2010, with a beta being released sometime around 3rd quarter 2009. Time is money and there is no way in hell a game that's already been in development for over a year is going to take another two to complete. They want this thing out as soon as possible, while still being a quality product.

Haha, no. They're a company and companies know that you never release a big seller in the 2nd quarter. If the game is finished by 2010 (which I doubt, since we haven't even seen a screen), then they will release 3Q-4Q 2010. However, if they miss that they'll wait until 3Q-4Q 2011. I would imagine that they wait until 2011.

Guild Wars 1 was released in second quarter... what are you talking about?
or are you talking about Christmas sales?

Resident Evil 4
Street Fighter 4
Killzone 2
Metal Gear Solid 4
God of War
God of War 2
God of War Chains of Olympus
That is what just came to mind for big name games breaking free of the Christmas Crunch and selling big in the spring. Not to mention the mountains of smaller named games wanting to stand out and not release the same week as 2 AAA titles and 6 in one month like we have had the last two Christmas seasons.
Gigashadow
Officially NCSoft has blocked out "2010-2011" for GW2. My guess would be that they are hoping for 3Q or 4Q 2010, but giving themselves some buffer room so they can slip it to 2011 if necessary.
My guess is you'll see GW2 start ramping up near the end of this year (after Aion releases), with the first people getitng into beta in 1Q or 2Q 2010.

I know they've said that they don't want to announce any new info until its up to a "superior level of polish"... its just there's been nothing new in what... 2 yearsish?
The Beta was supposed to be done and over with already, and they haven't even announced a possible time frame for when it will be...

Why the hell not, games are released throughout the year, Prophecies AND Factions were both released in April.

In the current economy, game companies are trying to make sure and get large revenues from a game as quickly as possible after its release. So, it makes sense that they would aim for Q3 considering it's one of the highest (if not the highest) game retail quarters. Basically, Q2 isn't as reliable of a release quarter as it used to be considering the lack of market stability and the dramatic drop of the average person's expendable income in the global economy. And I'm pretty sure NCSoft has taken all of that into account.
EDIT: But, of course, their release could dramatically change based on what else comes out that year (that year probably being 2011). If Blizzard releases something big, they'll probably move GW2 to the opposite side of the year to compensate sales.
Sir Skullcrasher
Keep this in mind folks! Amazon currently allows you to preorder Starcraft 2 even thought the game doesn't have a release date. (I'm currently preorder for one lol) I'm sure Amazon is doing this for GW 2 to get some early sales for it.
