my friend stopped playing guildwars and gave me his account, which has prophecies on it but none of the expansions. I googled a lot of my questions but just wanted to gt some more opinions.

Do I need to get all the other expansions to get these "new skills"? Someone said that if I dont buy them I'll be at an disadvantage because other people will have better skill than I do.

Should I play the singleplayer role play first? I'm pretty much only interested in PvP but are there any advantage to making a PVE character and lvling it up? I heard they get better looking weapons/armor and more skills.

I heard there's a PVP access kit that you can buy that unlocks all the things without having to buy any of the expansions, just not the single player. Is this true?

If PVP players can create any weapon and armor whenever they want why do people still use PVE characters to go against PVP players? WOudln't they be at an disadvantage? T

Thanks.

every expansion (factions, nf) has its own skills.. by playing a certain expansion you unlock more skills that will be equipable for your PvP heroes..

if u play the PvE first it would be better because there is a tutorial and you can unlock more skills, but if you start immediately with PvP you will be expected to know how to play without any tutorials and with limited skills

yes, there is a PvP access kit, buyable from the GWstore, although i dunno the price xD

so if I play PVP only but don't play through PVE, then I won't be able to use those skills?

If you pvp only you can use all the skills from the campaign you own AND any core skills. You cannot obtain, or use any of the other skills. However, if PVP only, you can buy factions, nightfall, and eotn skill unlock packs which allows you to use those skill whether you have those campaigns or not.

However, if u planned on pveing, not only will you be at a disadvantage without nightfall, factions and eotn, but youll only be experiencing about 25% of the game, whilst the nostalgic players would say its the best 25% of the (pve) game, its still only 25% of the whole.

For PVP you will need

The right skills
Although there are many skills in the game there are some key skills that are very useful to have, these are scattered through all the campaigns.

The ability to use those skills effectively
Having them is one thing knowing how to use them when and where to use them and when not to use them.

The ability to create a series of skills into a useful build that works in a team game.

The game is 4 years old there are players that have been here that long have all the skills and are very good.

Play some pve and get used to using skills, find a good guild that will help you grow in skill and confidence.

Most of all have fun.

No, you will still be able to get access to all skills (that you can have access to, e.g. all if you have all campaigns or pvp access kit), but you'll have to unlock them first (which is done automatic when you get them in PvE) by using balthazar factions which can take some time to get, especially if you don't have a good build.

Depending on which chapter you're on affects when and where you can first change profession

If you're a prophecies character then second proffession changing comes primarily from the desert, when you're lvl 17-20, from a seriesa of quests

For Factions it's from Senji on mainland Cantha after finishing the second mainland mission (lvl 18-20)

For Nightfall it's in the Sunspear Sanctuary on Mainland Elona, (lvl 18-20)

In addition you can also change profession in the Great Temple of Balthazar, which is accessible once you've unlocked access to the Battle Isles

I hear about this all the time lol. Consider yourself lucky. You will have more unlocked to begin with, even if you already have prophecies.

Yes, and I highly recommend you get the other games. Technically only Eye of the North is an expansion though. The reason why you need the versatility is because there is so many broken skills in the game so you need that choice to worth with. On the flip side if anything is ever improved, you will have access to it then too, not without the game and still limited choices.

Yes play the single player first. PvP is not the place where you can't be so good and smaller scale PvP isn't that forgiving I think (aka RA- I'm looking at you! I suck at it). Yes PvE characters can have nicer looking armor but that's all it is, LOOKS. Functionally it isn't anything more. The skills thing only applies to fighting the computer. There is PvE skills but they can only be used against the computer. So if you playing PvP on a PvE character same skill choice. I love PvP characters though. You can create ANYTHING you've unlocked on command. So handy when you change your chest armor's insignia all the time like I do (no worrying about breaking your old armor from salvaging, blowing money on perfect salvaging kits or from buying new insignias again). Plus I made a gimmick build today that required a sword and I have NO idea about swords... but since I unlocked some stuff already I could make a decent one.

Please do not get the PVP Access kit. It's stupid. Seriously, it's not worth it. If you ever want to do even ONE thing in PvE the amount of money you'll spend buying both would be more than if you bought the full game to begin with. That and there is no real beginner training as a PvP character... in you are thrown in not that much intro or help. And you will end up wasting tons of faction on heros, elite skills, runes, inscriptions, weapon modifiers... most of which you will routinely unlock FOR FREE naturally playing PvE saving you tons of faction and time. And heros and elite skills cost 3k a pop which is extremely annoying too! I never buy elite skills with faction, that is a total waste. I capture them in PvE. But by buying the PvP Access kit this is not an option. I did a rough estimate of how many much faction I've saved by unlocking for nothing in PvE: 60,000 or more, and I've only been playing since January and am not that serious. So that PvP kit, forget it. I don't even know of one person who uses it. Just not too long ago a gold dagger dropped in Ferndale while I was looking for a Black Moa, and it unlocked 2 new dagger weapon modifiers. I never play assassin but if I ever wanted to I would now have those options available from the start as a PvP character. And while it was only 2 things (I could play 2 rounds of FA to get them), this experience happens a lot so a lot is unlocked in PvE.

Not really. While they require gold to get a lot of things and can't create anything on demand, people really like it for the armor choices, and if you play PvP a certain way most of the time, the weapons and armor will probably stay pretty static and this would would take away the gold sink and need for creating new things. The fact that you can't buy PvP armor is completely broken anyways. In PvE you can just farm for new armor, but in PvP you need to basically gamble away your earnings and for the exotic stuff it's a wasteful investment IMO. They will probably never change it but it's broken.

Oh and don't call yourself a noob. Why do people still continue to do this? Noob ≠ newb. Real noobs are not only bad at the game, they are obnoxious, don't like to learn, whiny, just bad characteristics. Newbs don't know since they are new.

Well it's good that you're looking and trying to find answers for the questions you have, that's exactly the sort of mentality you need for PvP.

For starters I would advise playing through all the campaigns, they will make you better - hopefully you'll be able to find a decent guild that will help you as well.

Then when you start PvP I'm afraid you'll need access to all the skills. I'd start off getting your feet wet in RA/AB playing with guildies and working as a team. Unlock some skills and try out professions until you know what you want to play. Once you've unlocked most of the skills for your chosen profession(s) it's time to move on. Look for a new but eager PvP guild, not a good one since it will probably be an unhappy experience but one that is around your skill level and looking to improve.

Play more and get better doing GvG and Ha, doesn't matter if you lose - learn from your mistakes. When you lose, ask for critiques from people you play with and against, watch replays if possible (GvG) to see what you did wrong and could improve on. Ask for advice from good players, go read guides, read battle reports and listen to vent recordings

You do all that and show dedication/social skills you'll be a top GvG'er

At least thats how i see it: tbh it's honestly not worth it, by the time you get good enough everyone would have left either out of boredom or GW2. If you enjoy playing around top 500 level that takes only a couple months and it's very achievable, it can also be quite fun if you have a guild that you enjoy playing with...
