Title says it all. I need to know exactly what people are talking about when they mention this.

Wikipedia response FTW:
Quote:
Power creep is the gradual unbalancing of a game due to successive releases of new content. The phenomenon may be caused by a number of different factors and, in extreme cases, can be damaging to the longevity of the game in which it takes place. As new expansions or updates are released, new game mechanics or effects are introduced, making it increasingly difficult for older content to remain in balance without changes. Usually, this means new content releases grow successively more powerful while older content becomes relatively underpowered. |

Wow... that wiki quote pretty much defines GW in 2009 :O

Compared to other games I've played (ie Neverwinter Nights), GW's powercreep isn't that bad.
Divine Ashes
man Neverwinter Nights was soooo buggy...I had to stop playing..
HawkofStorms
GW isn't as bad as some other games... but its still bad.
Basically, imagine trying to play in high end PvP or complete certain HM stuff with only the skills you have when Prophecies first came out (and no heroes or consumables).

Yeah, the wiki quote has a good definition, and HawkofStorms post is very true. High end PvPing or doing HM in EotN with only prophecies/core skills would he hell and you'd be quite ineffective due to power creep. Power creep is bad.
Arduin
So, the other way round, being able to c-space through Prophecies with Heroes, PvE-skills and Consumables is also an effect of Power Creep?
Haxor
Yes, it is. New, more powerful skills versus old Prophecies skills.

You also have powercreep in movie series and TV shows. Villains who where once an absolute terror eventually become easyer to defeat until they need to team up with the heroes to defeat the next über villain.
Like the Borg in Star trek and the agents in the Matrix.

Powercreep is a problem, but the problem is the fact that offence and defence dont get powercreeped equally, and many skills get left behind. This results in the "gimmicks" that everyone complains about as if ur not using those skills, ur gonna get rolled because they are more powerful then the others.

Power creep, no matter how evil it is, is a major source of short term income for developers though. The ability to become more powerful by buying a new campaign often outweighs the cons of the damage it does to the game. In a game without subs its amazing we don't have a lot more of it.
ajc2123
ty, now i know what it means.

On my LotR server there were these locked doors to houses in Bree, the doors were set as area transitions but the houses had no interiors. The locks had to be picked to open, but the DC was low so I could do it on my pvp character. Opening the lock and using the door would transport you to one of about 10 random locations in the world...
You could also cast area effect spells around to see if a DM was watching you, I'd throw spells all over the place till I saw like "so and so: immune to spells", then message them in whisp.
I also miss having duels and general brawling in the towns, and randomly meeting people in explorable areas.
Much more <3 able game for me.
