far up in the NW corner of Tyria there's a massive black ominous looking island. when i first noticed it i thought "must be some high-lvl zone, cant wait to explore it!!". except.. you cant! does this island have any lore/backstory at all?? or is it just decoration

I see no black island to the north west on there :S

Unless you mean the South west, black island called Perdition Rock.

Where you would be correct, can be explored towards the end of the story line.

ANet is saving special tidbits of the map in case they ever decide to release new areas/content and need places to put it.

Or so I would think.

I always thought if they added new areas it would be an underground type not requiring a map.

Also always figured they were setting the scene for GW2. No actual Lore is released as of yet for that area, but my guess is its where one of the dragons are residing, if it isn't flooded out like LA is. (Or destroyed, whatever happened to part of kryta)

QFT. This is what I thought soon after they released the extended EOTN map of Tyria.

Same here, really - imagine the screams if it played havoc with Cartography titles...

Nothing known on that island.

I still find it doubtful that 5 (or 6) highly powerful large ancient creatures are all together on the same continent. I wouldn't expand the number. As for the "flooded out like LA is" - the island is on the other side of Kryta. Southern Kryta gets flooded, not the Northern.

I would like to know whats with the following.

Tyria:
north of everything
west of maguuma
east of everything
the northwest sectors (i assume for eotn addons)

Cantha:
south of everything
the western slope of the mainland (I see it as mostly city though)

Elona:
north of vabbi (I think this is these are the same places east of the crystal desert)
east of everything

Just ask for the whole globe... >_>

We do know what is east of Elona (at least east of Vabbi) that would be Dzalana. Though we do not know what it looks like.

I should have I guess sorry it was late and my mind was rushing

Dzalana seems to be empty expanses of inhospitable empty plains and sand.
And harpies.

It's kind of like those archaic maps of the world, with their unexplored regions... "here there be dragons"...

...oh dear. That is unusually appropriate.

I'd say it's more of a cliff-covered area. And if harpies live there, it's not inhospitable. Also, I think Hekets live there too. :P

Regarding the black ominous island to the north...

I've actually been wondering if that might be the Hrangmer volcano where the Burnt Warband first contacted the Titans. It seems like it would be much more accessible to the Charr than the Ring of Fire.

That begs the question of why there was a Titan so far from the Door of Komalie in the first place - but likely through a similar means to how Terick and the Fortune Teller (and, possibly, whoever was ultimately responsible for turning Kahyet) got into the world. Whatever that was.

I think that Hrangmar is north, east, or northeast of the Charr Homelands. While possible that island is where Hrangmar is, I think it is just a tad more likely for the Burnt Warband to not have crossed Norn and Tengu territory.

As for "That begs the question of why there was a Titan so far from the Door of Komalie in the first place" - two words, Odran's portals.

I'd agree totally on the portals, Titans seem to use them as the Shirokin used spirit rifts to move about quickly.

It doesn't seem that unlikely to me - it's already established that they cross Norn territory freely as long as they don't cause trouble, and we don't know for sure that there were Tengu there then (or the Burnt Warband could simply have fought their way through them).

Given the timing, there is strong circumstantial evidence that the portals had something to do with it...
