GW on Ubuntu

I just loaded Ubuntu on my computer, and loaded up GuildWars with WINE.

The initial installation and everything seemed to go fine, but when I booted up GuildWars, all I got was a black and blue screen.

Any suggestions for why this might happen?

because GW is not designed for linux and WINE, and shit can happen if you try?

it's likely that you don't have 3D acceleration functionality installed. device drivers on linux can be a huge pain. if you have a radeon graphic card, you can forget about running games on linux altogether.

Try disabling the "Allow Pixel Shaders" option in Wine, it should at least allow you to see stuff. Disabling a few other things can also get it running even with a radeon card, just don't expect huge framerates.

I'd try asking on the Ubuntu forums, or the Wine topics.

I have friends that've gotten it to run perfectly fine with Ubuntu, they just can't run vent and gw at the same time because vent requires focus or something like that.

Black and blue screen?
Like alternating bars black and blue, or a blackish-blue screen?

Either way, try it with the following commands:
-dx8 -noshaders -windowed -nosound

I've found that these help a lot in WINE, my laptop can't even run GW without these.

Also make sure you have WINE set up correctly for your computer. Just installing it doesn't set it up.

Moriz, you don't like to take risks, or do much out of the norm, do you?

oh i do take risks and such. however, every installation of linux i've ever done on my PC will result in different results every single time, even from the same disk, and installing everything in the exact order. the best i've ever gotten GW to do under ubuntu was 2 fps. with the same hardware, windows vista/7 gives me well over 200 fps.

frankly at the end of the day, i want my stuff to work, and i want them to work with minimal hassle. linux (any flavour) does not give this to me. and as such, linux is worthless for me.

Sorry,

wine doesn't have the really needed 3D support, you need to revert to wineX which today is Cedega, www.transgaming.com. Unfortunately, that is a buy you gotta take.

But then it works very well.
I run GW with Slackware 12.1 and Cedega 7.1.0 and don't have problems worth mentioning.
Only issues I have is the finetuning, but I can do that after a bit of googling and reading.

Don't forget, Cedega like wine is a "translator" thus takes up system resources and thereby gives you a bit lesser performance then you get under M$.

try PlayOnLinux
It is a project scripting wine for most common applications :
http://www.playonlinux.com/en/manual.html

I don't know if they provide a script for GW, though, since i didn't find any listing of suported softwares. But last time i tried POL, it worked rather well, so it is worth a try.

It was the pixel shader.

So far, the login screen looks fine.

I'll update if anything else comes up.

Thanks, guys.

I've used it successfully with CrossOver Games

I noticed that it was not compatible with the hi-def textures though. Had to disable KSMod to be able to load up into a town.
