Chaos dmg from an ele weapon?!
free_fall
I recently got 2 Seticor's Sceptres while XP farming. Gave a quick glance at the stats when the 1st one dropped- req9 Energy Storage, +5E^50%H, HSR ES 20% - and put it away in storage, didn't even look at the 2nd one when it dropped.
A few days later, I got Vekk and, wanting to make him an Air spiker and not having a spare Brimstone wand laying around, I gave him one of these sceptres to use until I could get a Brimstone for him.
Imagine my surprise, on more closely inspecting it, to discover that this thing does Chaos damage, of all things! I've never seen or heard of an elementalist weapon that did that.
Anyone else ever come across a similarly unusal weapon?

Thought pretty much all energy storage weapons deal chaos damage?

Actually, it is not so unique. I guess you just did it like everyone else and used weapons related to the element of the build.
Energy Storage Staffs/Wands are just not used as often as 40/40 sets or staffs related to the main element of the build. You need fire for Mark of Rodgort, or lightning for the by now outdated Glimmering Mark and so on.

It's fairly common for energy storage weapons to have chaos damage, yep. Sometimes they'll be fire + air I think, but nothing spectacular about the chaos ones. I'm sure I've got oodles of 'em. Voltaic wands spring to mind.

I saved a nice req 9 ES Embercrest staff that Cyndr gave me, and I'm glad I did. I find it very useful when running discord caller, pseudo-smiter, and other builds where you max ES but run a bunch of skills from another profession. Not that wand damage counts for much, but it's nice to be able to meet the req and do what harm you can while skills are recharging.

Yeah, slightly disappointed that my Tengu staff is Chaos damage. Not that uncommon, but a bit annoying if you overlook it and realize it later =P.

Thanks, wasn't aware that ES weps were commonly linked to Chaos damage.
It occurred to me after I posted that this might be good for ele/mes's, I know there's some of them out there.
I suppose, also, that it's a good choice for it's damage going against base AL, in the same way my necs and rits prefer to use weps with Dark dmg, as opposed to Cold or Lightning, or monks with Holy over Fire.

ES weapons are often found linked to Chaos damage *BUT* it's only crafter/collector or Green weapons.
Sadly there's not even a tiny chance to find a Gold one dealing Chaos Dmg - Golds are always Fire/Cold/Lightning/Earth, which makes them almost strictly worse in comparison (outside very specific niche applications).
Not only there's the problem that there are huge loads of nice looking Energy Storage (and other primary attribute) staffs around with a very small choice of the actually useful attribute specific staffs, none of the ES ones deal Chaos Dmg which makes them even more useless for me - I'd take a functionally better crafter/collector one over them anytime.
There's much to be fixed and improved in the generally weak GW's item system, and adding Chaos Damage to the list of possible randomly chosen damage types for dropped (generated - white/blue, purple, gold; as opposed to all the Fixed ones) Energy Storage Staffs is just a tiny tip of the iceberg, but still would be a great improvement.
Next step should be adding more useful attributes to all the multiprofession rare staff skins which currently use just the *least* useful (primary) ones.

It's pretty common. Magmus staff and all energy storage weapons and uniques has Chaos damage.
Good thing about it: It doesn't get affected by any conditional armor bonuses since it's neither physical nor elemental damage. Besides skills like Winter, Greater Conflagration and such won't work to it's disadvantage.
Bad things: Elemental bonus skills like Mark of Rodgort, Conjure skills and the advantages of spirits doesn't work with it either.
