Why Isn't The Panda Charmable?
chris1234565
Hi i was recently looking at pets and saw panda as one that was removed and it said this "The panda was removed from the game prior to release because of local laws: in China you are not allowed to depict the death of an endangered species (such as the panda) in a video game".
But that got me thinking if they have removed this why havnt they also removed Polar Bears and white tigers as they are also indangered in the wild.
It just sounds a little silly why panda is the only pet taken away.
Tell me your opinions guyes

Because Polar Bears and White Tigers (not positive about the tigers...maybe I'm wrong...too lazy to wiki) are not from China, so that law doesn't apply to them. Thats my guess anyway.

Symbol of china
attacking panda = attacking china too...
^^sums it up. My grammars not perfect but atleast i make sense in my thread titles.

I see what you guyes are saying but polars and white tigers are also ######### to kill they may not be the symbol animal off a country but its still a law
and anyway i though china had 12 symbol animals 1 for each year

Because China says so.
I mean, you can debate the semantics of it all you want, but some PRC outlet requested ArenaNet remove it and they did.

The twelve animals are Chinese zodiacs. They're used by a large number of Southeast Asian countries and do not exclusively represent China. The national animals of China are Chinese dragon, panda, and cranes. I'm wondering if Anet also changed the cranes to appease China.

I am even more appalled then my previous post.
So how long till rangers Beast Mastery is removed from the game? ..lol

So from what ppl are saying i think china have the final words on it and i dont think anet can do nothing.
But what is stupid why they banned it coz they though ppl would kill it in game lol.
How rediculas would you be to just kill pandas on the map

"The panda was removed from the game prior to release because of local laws: in China you are not allowed to depict the death of an endangered species (such as the panda) in a video game".
Factions was released on April 28, 2006. The panda was removed prior to that date, over three years ago.
Anet is not removing pets from the game. The sky is not falling. It'll be OK.

china said it was a violent act against them

I find it pretty ridiculous. Interesting how killing animals in games is not ok, but killing people is. Stupidity.

China say jump, people tend to say how high.
Killing a virtual panda is too bad for China, suprised that the Sunspear's were allowed to rally against Varesh.

Please use logic .
China has a law about pandas - so technically they have the power to ban games as they wish if they feel it goes against their beliefs/laws.Unless your racist you want your game to be available in all countries for sales and money making purposes.
China bans gw game and thats quite a few potential customers and cash gone
Say gw decided to have it where a primary quest involves say pigs being cooked and eaten by that player - now thats the jewish people and muslims removed from guildwars .
Pandas you always think of as being cute - polar bears/tigers you know are predators but have a slight cuteness when cubs. But to portray a panda as being a killing machine would offend a lot of people even tho its just a game.
Game companies have to view what can be alowed in all countries rather than get their games banned .
I also think they have to watch exactly what the game goes into - govt dont like games which can become a politcal issue. I do remember a playstation game that got banned in several countries - Thrill Kill .. but i also recall its 'engine' was used for a Wu Tang Clan game which played similar but without the violence ( thrill kill relied on violence and graffic wounds ).
The end of the day it boils down to image - you keep a gd image with a country and they allow the games but do something that can show them ( eg chinese looking factions chr killin a panda ) doing an act thats against their rules and you portray them as being that.

It's against the law to kill people too in most places isn't it? lol.
There is flawed logic somewhere there.
And in the end, it's all about money. That's all most companies care about...profit.

Oh by the way - I love killing Elonian players because they're dark skinned. Hate crime ftw. Can you see where I'm going with this? :-)

So last time I checked pretty much every country has a law against killing humans. What exactly is the difference between killing an animated panda and killing an animated human?

Anyway, all the answers already explained it. While tigers and polar bears are endangered, they are not the "national symbol" of a potentially huge market for the game company.
It's fine to offend tree-huggers, just not fine to offend a massive section of the market.

Charming and endangered species would just be flat out cruel!

from wiki "in recent decades the Giant Panda has also served as an emblem for the country" problem solve =p it is like saying that...oo every1 China doing the dumb law cause they dun let Panda put in game because of endanger...well...what about this...why don't Anet put in "Bald Eagle" and kill it and cap it? o wait...bald eagle is represent U.S.A...so now I hope u see why the reason they have to right to not put in the Panda...Panda is like represent of China...so show some respect...

Do you want A.net to be sued? It's a rather minor change that they implemented and it is better to do that then risk getting into trouble over. Preventative lawyering at its best.

But anyway, it was the right thing to do from Anet's side. Quite a large portion of the market might have been lost otherwise.
