Salvage Kit Questions

Hey guys, I have been pondering this for a while. What type of items should I use the Expert Kit on? Are light-blue colored items worth it?
Also, does using an Expert Kit get you more "regular" materials than a normal kit on items?

Well, if you're going to salvage something that's blue/purple/gold, be sure to ID it first to see what it has.

Expert kits can remove runes/insignias/weapon mods, though there's a chance of the item breaking when you do so. Minor runes are usually light blue and generally they are worth salvaging.

I don't know if an expert kit gets you more materials than a regular one (I wouldn't think so), but it does give a chance of salvaging rare materials.

If you're just going for regular materials, expert kits give the same amount as regular kits. Actually you have more of a problem because of the chance that expert kits will salvage the rare material instead.

The color of the item doesn't affect how much salvage you get from it last I recall, except for blue items that have a Highly Salvageable modifier.

That doesn't answer his questions at all.

A regular "Salvage kit" will only ever get you common materials. An "expert salvage kit" will let you remove upgrades from a blue, purple or gold item (like runes or bow strings, etc.) with a chance of not destroying the item. The expert kit will also let you salvage for materials and give a chance of salvaging rare materials instead of common materials (like steel ingots instead of iron ingots.) Salvaging for materials always destroys the item.

When it comes to learning what to salvage and what kit to use, you need to get familiar with the trader NPCs. The Rune, Material and Rare Material trader guys you find in some towns and possibly in your guild hall.

First, if you know you'll soon want to craft some new armor, it's nice to save up the kind of materials you'll need ahead of time. Second, you want to consider salvaging when the item will grant a rune or materials worth more than what the merchant will pay for the unsalvaged item. If you pay attention to drops and trader price trends, you begin to get a feel for what is and is not worth salvaging. Until then, you can search the wiki about items to see what kind of materials they might salvage.

You don't have to pay attention to this stuff. I know lots of people who don't bother and just merch anything they don't currently need for their characters or heroes. I also know people who salvage everything, store up stacks of materials and then sell it to other players for a price between how much the trader NPC's buy and sell for. Materials that tend to stay worth more than than the minium 100g from the trader stay that way because lots of players are using them, so that could be a good indication of what's worth keeping if you plan to sell to other players.

There are no NPC traders for weapon upgrades (grips, hilts, inscriptions, etc.) You can check the PC stickies here on guru to see if an item has a weapon mod worth salvaging to sell to other players. Of course, use an expert salavage kit if it has a mod you want for your own weapons.

Later in the game, you may run into "Superior Salvage Kits" and "Perfect Salvage Kits." Superior kits work just like expert kits, but they come with 100 uses instead of 25, and the effective cost of use each time is slightly higher. Perfect kits will remove mods (either armor mods or weapon mods) and are guaranteed not to break the item they're attached to.

Sup kits have more uses, and sup+perf kits have better % (synergizing with your specific titles) of keeping the item in tact=more merch food

Really? I know perfect kits are 100% retain, but is there a difference between expert and superior when it comes to chance of breaking the item?

I think Superior ones just have more uses than Expert.

Anyways, I would check the Rune Trader NPC and see if the runes you find are going for or if you should sell them.

Yes, always check out the rune trader for the prices of runes when you find some. It is a good way to get rich, fast.

Use normal salvage kits when you're looking for normal items, it's cheaper.

You must use expert salvage kits to remove runes and other upgrades, and rare items.

It doesn't matter what items you salvage from.. blue, purple, gold, as long as you deem it isn't useful for you, you should always salvage things on it that might be worth something, and sell it to the respective in-game trader (NPC).

Also, about runes - ID the rune once you salvage it off, and it'll tell you the current merchant value.

I've found that you can get a lot more for some runes by selling them to the merchant instead of to the rune trader.

Isn't the standard rune price 25 gold for merchants?

Yes, but when you salvage a rune it doesn't have a price on it, so you can ID it. Sometimes it just goes from 25g to 27 g, but, on superior runes it can often be 150g+. Many sup. runes aren't in high demand (like Superior Mysticism) so the rune trader will only give you 25g unless you ID them first for the higher rune price.

When your chance to not destroy what you are salvaging from gets higher, doing this can be more profitable than just selling the armor.
