Set timeout for AFK??

This is just the thing I'm perplexed by, whether it's jade quarry, fissure of woe or some other post there always seems to be players who do absolutely nothing but sit there taking up server resources. What is it they do, take a lunch period? Forget they're still on? I don't know but I've seen this as a bit of an annoyance to loading areas and if they're not making themselves useful, they can log off. Now I'm not saying that as to be insulting but like I said, it does nothing to the benefit of the server costs keeping them on while they don't even push a key for an hour.
Here's what I propose, give 30m-1hr. If no action is taken, the character is automatically logged back to the login screen with a note explaining they were inactive. It will save hassle all around and if anyone disagrees with this, well they ain't helping either! (LOL) Only exceptions to the rule is for certain areas or events that deal with long periods of waiting. You can have that for 9 rings, or trade etc etc, but nothing else.
Helpful to the servers? yes or no

Special events like nine rings should send you a command prompt. Hit any key to stay logged in. Remove the ability to farm rings and make players actually earn those title points!

I don't like the idea of this being applied to explorable areas
...how would I death level my pre-searing character? =S
I tend to randomly go AFK a lot in towns, outposts and explorable areas...
(In fact, I'm still AFK right now after having just come back from a break) =P
If it logged me out while in a town/outpost, I wouldn't particularly mind
...but if I was taking a break halfway through a vanquish or dungeon or something.
I'd be rather unhappy to come back and find myself logged out ^^;

Does he ever go outside?
Explorable areas were excluded from my concept. I know that's just something you don't mess with.

I use to be afk a lot and I don't want to be disconnected every 1-2 hours.

Well what are you doing during those 1-2 hours? hmmm?

Not in explorable areas or towns. I do sign for JQ. Even if the time there should be a minute, or else it wont work there.

sorry but not. i'm sorry those afk peeps scared you but no. half the time i "played" is me being afking doing stuff like chores,hw,etc. or i leave my girl in a nine ring or those other rings for events. sometime if i'mbrave enough i go afk in a vanq. sorry but i think this a bad idea. if those afk peeps bother you so much just switch districts. dont mess up it for peeps with lives because you cant go afk alot like we do.

Currently, what we have is 10 hours no activity anywhere kicks you.
In towns and outposts, I agree with 2 hours. In Explorables, keep it 10. Though, a single button restarts that 10 hour thing... Should have a "minimum amount of movement" if at all possible.
Still, first /sign in a while, for once a good (but probably repeated) suggestion.

As for switching districts, this is a solution I applied a long time ago so it hasn't been much of an issue in getting my business taken care of. Other players besides me still have their share of problems so taking them into consideration is more important.
Please do not attempt to de-rail this thread into a grieving argument.

Not really sure the servers are strained by people who are afk, and I don't go afk very often myself.... but....
This would still be easy to get around. If you want to go afk in a town, just get into a corner and put something on the forward movement key. You will run into the wall continuously, and the game will not see you as afk.

That is NOT lag. It's low FPS.

People going AFK are taking up fewer server resources than people moving around and doing things in the game.
Anyway, /notsigned, because more than anything else it would punish those who go afk for valid and innocent reasons (personally, I'm multitasking a lot while playing GW and often get called away from my computer. If I'm halfway through a mission or in the middle of an explorable, damn straight I'm going to just go afk instead of having to redo everything again when I return).

Until it can be shown that people being AFK takes up a legitimate amount of server space then this is /notsigned.
All your client has to do is load in the already existing low armor textures and a few other small things for people in towns. Having people who are AFK in a district will hardly affect your ping or amount of lag (unless you are purely talking 9 Rings, in which case, go to a high numbered district ffs). AFK people aren't constantly changing armor sets, or running around, or switching secondary professions. They aren't doing ANYTHING that requires your client to update for them, and the only thing they're doing that requires the server to know about is ping their current location.

Once I HAD to switch user for my dd toget on for work stuff.
I spent 3 hours afk in the FoW (with 6 necros, friend zoned in with me). I would not have liked to have wanted to get d/c'd with 8 quests completed.
The current system is fine.

Geez!!! NOT Signed!!!
People who aren't doing anything take near no server power. More coding to select 'non-offenders' is a wast of time.
This Could make LDOA near imposible. Its a call someone would have to make. Dungeons, Vanqs, cartographers etc...yup, we all need to take a lunch/life break at times.
Maybe switch to decaf?
ps: Curious. Do you actually go check areas over a several hour period
to check out the 'offenders' ?

dont like the idea.
Some of us are in the middle of doing something in town and all the sudden, a child needs your attention, you fixing dinner for the family, your (like 1 said) taking a lunch break, your waiting for the friend to get on so you can do what you planned on doing, your husband fell down and broke his rubs and needed a trip to the E.R. (true story, that was my husband), there are thousands of reasons why people are AFK in town. Yes some are lagit, and some are just taking up space. What is wrong with standing on 9 rings while sleeping? That is why the 9 rings game was created...a money sink and a way to max those titles without it taking next to forever. If you are having a problem with loading an area, go to Asia...no one ever there, always loads just fine.

Sometimes, I don't move at all, and just sit and read trade chat. I get hypnotized by it. How do you know I'm AFK at all? I don't see this as a major GW issue. If everything else were perfect, sure, let's work on the something like this. But there are far more serious matters that require the attention of programmers.
Botting and leeching are major problems in some areas. There are game bugs to fix and skills to balance. I'm one of the guilty parties who tend to leave GW and wander back and forth, while doing other stuff, but it doesn't mean I don't read the trade screen and respond when I see something I might want to buy.
Should I be logged out for that? Should I have to remember to move?

One other point. How do you know the "AFK" person isn't in whisper with someone from their guild, or a friend, using their GW time to socialize? I do that too.

Like many people here, I'm sure, I go AFK during events to get prizes. I can't always be here at my computer, so it's just easier to let GW do the work for me.
I also go AFK often during dungeon runs. It's nice know if I want to head out for a bite I'll still be logged in, exactly where I left my character, when I get back.
So, no. I don't want to be kicked off after 30 minutes.

the afk would kill some of my dungeon runs. Fail.
otherwise, i agree the 9 rings exception is key - who wants to sit around for 9 hrs straight, moving their mouse every 30mins?

also not sure how valid the argument is. I, for one, often stand in the same spot for long periods of time while chatting with ppl in my alliance. While I may appear to be afk to other people in the outpost, i am in fact not.
