Complaining about "kids these days" is not a recent phenomenon. This quote was attributed to Socrates by Plato:

"The children now love luxury; they have bad manners, contempt for authority; they allow disrespect for elders and love chatter in place of exercise. Children now are tyrants, not the servants of their households. They no longer rise when elders enter the room. They contradict their parents, chatter before company, gobble up dainties at the table, cross their legs, and tyrannize their teachers.”

anecdotal evidence at best

i don't think there was ever a time when the elders didn't complain about the youth of the day:
Quote:
"I see no hope for the future of our people if they are dependent on
frivolous youth of today, for certainly all youth are reckless beyond
words... When I was young, we were taught to be discreet and
respectful of elders, but the present youth are exceedingly wise
[disrespectful] and impatient of restraint" (Hesiod, 8th century BC).

From the musical Bye Bye Birdie circa 1960's

Kids!
I don't know what's wrong with these kids today!
Kids!
Who can understand anything they say?
Kids!
They are so ridiculous and immature!
I don't see why anybody wants 'em!
Just you wait and see
Kids!
Kids! They are just impossible to control!
(Soon you'll be old enough to be)
Kids! With their awful clothes and their rock an' roll!
(Another teenage delinquent)
Why can't they be like you were,
Perfect in every way?
What's the matter with kids to--
Kids!
What the devil's wrong with these kids today?
Kids!
Who could guess the they would turn out that way!
Why can't they be like we were,
Perfect in every way?
What's the matter with kids?
What's the matter with kids?
What's the matter with kids today?

What a brilliant quote. This shows that it is innate for kids to act this way, thats just there nature, and it is the nature of adults to view kids this way, no matter the culture or place in history. When it comes to dealing with them in gw, just don't give into them.

Yeah i loved the given quote to.. its after all its rather old..older than 1970 =)

Well i believe parents should be your best friends in the houshold..treat them wiht respect they treat you back with respect back..and occasional icecream..and clothing.....and food....and games.....and money....and Love...But it doesnt mean you must treat them as anything highewr then you are.. For example i never had to stand up when my mother came into the room...when some 1 did not know came in then you stand up give a shake/hug and go back sit down.. nothing less nothing more...What udults are forgeting espcialy thos eof elder status... That they are no greater then yunger human beings.. after all whos paying for their SS =).. No No but yeah respect and TOTAL OBEDIENCE ARE TWO DIFFERENT THINGS

and i think that OP and that other Publick worker person think that OBEDIENCE is the way to go -_-........

There are subtle aspects to the "kids these days" cycle, however:
- Shift in societal values. People don't "grow out" of everything; certain attitudes and mindsets prevalent amongst the younger population will persist and become mainstream adult values. At the same time, this tends not to be as serious as the doomsayers constantly proclaim, because society has a tendency to self-correct; extreme shifts in thinking tend to provoke strong counter-reactions.
- Do as I say, not as I do. Most adults aren't upstanding people either, they're merely better at preserving appearances in public. The Greater Internet ****wad Theory isn't limited to children; insulate people from the consequences of their actions and you'll begin to see their true character. All of the morons and assholes you see on the internet are morons and assholes in real-life - they only act differently because they're not willing to get beaten up or arrested.

Ding ding ding ding

Why others alwasy say what i mena better then me -_-..oh yeah im an immigrant =)

Regardles yes thank you i agree especialy about the second part of your statement...But sometimes i must correct you people become assholes and morons because they just CANT do it in real life.. not beacuse of the fear of being beaten up or arrested but because they fall into roleplay to much..........Especially in Kurz Luxon things.. we all know they are both same poeple but if you are roleplayng and to much into it you are bound to become an asshole towards the oposite side.....

So yeah hope i made myself clear....

These kids on Guild Wars that are causing problems, are probably angels in the presence of their parents. just think, they have Guild Wars where they can interract with people and not have to follow the rules and guidance of their parents. What did you do when your parents were away? Did you get into trouble? Did you do things that you would never do had they been looking over your shoulder?

I drove my family's car several times at the age of 11 when my parents were both at work...My sister and I went joy riding for about 30 minute and calmly parked it back in the spot where my parents had left it. Hey, we all did stuff when our parents were either at work or out of town. These kids are no different. So what if they are rude and have potty mouths. They are out here on the internet without supervision.

I just hope that when Guild Wars 2 comes that they migrate to that game and leave this one with a little peace while I try to make all of my characters GWAMM.

People should be thanked for not being bad and doing what they're supposed to?

Seems silly.

Causes of OP's problem:

1) Anonymity and lots of players.
2) These two factors yield few repeat interactions where it becomes costly to be rude. RL example: traffic. People are rude in traffic for the same basic reason - no social consequences.
3) The wording of the OP's post seems to suggest that the OP is having this problem with PUGs.
4) There is a selection effect that causes you to observe rude, incompetent PuGs. If the player were either pleasant company or skilled, they likely would be invited to participate in a regular group rather than a PUG.

Conclusion: The OP needs to take care of his own problem by networking his way into groups comprised of decent human beings. Either he should be more social or he should focus on improving his own skill, so as to become an attractive asset to regular groups and be able to avoid PUGs.

Or, to put it another way: this thread isn't going to change anyone's behavior, so the OP is best off finding a way to change his in order to minimize the irritant.

HAHA omg lol

I think basically there is no accountability for their actions online hence they do (or don't do) whatever they want.

I just had a fun 1/2 hour reading through this topic I do hope that most of the posts were ironic, anyway they made me laugh.

While I agree with the OP to a small extent, I find the majority of GW players remarkably kind, helpful and well-mannered.

And when they are not, I remind myself that the best lesson is a good example.

Now who wants to hear about my cat........

This is a place where you can find posts like " i demand to know why Arena Net
is banning my account for 72 hours. All i did was to pm that guy and call him an idiot noob" . these guys are either serious about being morons or are just morons trying to be serious . either way, you will find subjects like "please say
thank you" , devoid of any meaning . Sadly, perhaps this is an even worse place to mention it, because hey what is worse than a MMO player that farms stuff for lunch other than a poopoo MMO player that has time to read forums at lunch , lets say like that Ghost Omel who can't seem to stop typing .
or me, who is asking for it.

This wins the thread for me

I too was growing up in the 70's and I remember vividly pissing off my friend’s mom and both me and my friend getting wooden spoons across the back numerous times. Did not take long to figure out your boundaries and not to cross them.

Maybe this is why, I am sure the younger also have simliar stat.

Mental disorders are common in the United States and internationally. An estimated 26.2 percent of Americans ages 18 and older — about one in four adults — suffer from a diagnosable mental disorder in a given year.

EDIT: Using this stat there are a few of us posting right now that fit the category.

No argument's here except that I think it's pointless to put in I'm going to treat you the same if you were 3 and never touched an mmo before.

Quote:
I've to say that, sadly, players in this game seem to have little or no common courtesy/manners.
Thats the way people are. If you don't like it try not playing with other people or only people you know. People treat friends differently from others what you might not thank a pug for you might thank a guild for surprisingly some people don't even notice they treat people differently.

Quote:
I'm talking about a simple "hey there" when you join a group.
99% of the time when I join a group (that's if I join a group and not just h/h it) I'm there to get it done not to make friends.

Quote:
Or perhaps a, "thanks for the run" to the leader if it was a good run?
You either pay the runner or it's something they were probably going to do anyway. Yes if it's a free run I'll thank the guy. But if I'm paying them unless they do an extraordinary job I won't say anything.
Because if I'm paying them they should be thanking me. No offence, It's just customer service.

Quote:
Or perhaps complimenting the healer for keeping everyone in the party healthy or even rezzing the reckless zerger that keeps getting killed all the time?
If they aren't willing to do those they shouldn't be a healer except the reckless zerger leave him dead he's hurting more then he's helping.

Quote:
Again, is it too much to ask for folks to have common courtesy? It's an MMO there are people behind those 'toons' you group with (except, of course, henchmen and heroes). It's not only good for your in-game experience but you'll also find out that being courteous in real life is a very good trait to have.
Yes it is to much to ask. People are courteous in real life it just so happens that when I'm playing a game that's my time. While yes it is their time to they don't have to party with you. I feel no need for courtesy. Go ahead and say what you want it's just the way thing's are.

Quote:
While I'm mindful that there are a lot of angst- and raged-filled teeny-boppers, the fact is that age and life stage alone is no excuse for being rude to your fellow players.
Just like you being married and having kids is no excuse for acting like you deserve more respect then anyone else.
