I've made a sin and plan to farm/run/etc eventually. But do I need a set of max armor to do these things? Or is it ok if I use an AR 40 armor that I already have for SF build?

Lots of Radiants+attunes. Vitae and vigor are also good, for normal play+the skills that hurt through Sf (touch skills, PBAoE, ect.)

but yes, max armor for perma is always helpful for those things that go through it

max armor is a must if your tanking or farming. Alot of enemies have skills like Tenais crystals or aftershock, basically any AoE skills at activate adjacent to the caster, go through SF.

I edited my post I ment to say point blank spells, but touch skills also go through, most of them are armor ignoring tho, accept for maybe lightning touch and shock, all I can think of right now. Basically anything that is not a targeting spell or attack will go through, this includes signets, skills that are not described as spells or attacks, and spells like flame burst that don't need to target anybody. Traps will go through sf also.

Traps and non-targeted area-of-effect spells are what you really need armor for. Touch skills tend to be armor-ignoring anyway. But yes, we all agree that a perma needs max armor. The farmers that don't want max armor tend to be monks.
