What's with guilds spazzing about swearing?
Sekhmet585
i swear like a sailor in real life but when i join a guild if the rules are no swearing in alliance chat guess what... i don't swear especialy if i like the guild. By the way the first person caught on "To Catch a Bad Player" would in fact be you Kain b/c from the original post it seems like you expect a guild that you join to cater to your will even when you probably knew what the rules are...

I would have kicked you too. Not even for the swearing, but for your reaction to what was a polite request.
And at any rate...their guild, their alliance, their rules. I hate when people just go "turn on the swear filter!". Its existence does not make using language that's deemed inappropriate by Anet in their game okay. Not to mention the fact that it censors a lot of innocent words - back before I realized I could shut it off, I was surprised to discover it censored 'bite'. |
If you play any game with a swear filter you can hardly type anything without it getting supsessed, that is a problem with filters yes, but if you dont want to see it then you turn the RED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GOing filter on.
Age of Conan is the only MMO so far that has the correct stance on swearing.
Seriously, if you dont want to see swear words, why are you using the internet in the first place?
Also how much music do you listen to with swear words in the lyrics? No one complains about eminem or missy elliot etc, yet the same people will probably complain about swearing on alliance chat just to make themselves look important.
What do you do when people swear in real life? Saying the F word once doesnt mean that a person swears all the time, even all you anti swearing people will have used swear words at some point in your lives and will also do in the future, if you say you never swear then I detect major bullcrap.

First of all, there's really no such thing a good PvE guild. PvE people use guilds/alliances as chat rooms, nothing more. Aside from the few guilds who are commited to owning towns or whatever, everyone still pugs everything.
I also agree its retarded to have "no swearing rules". One of the first things I do when i join a new alliance is be obscene in alliance chat, and if people are babies about it I'll just laugh at them and leave. I don't wana play with cranky 40 year old soccer dads who feel the constant need to be polite and proper. It's a game, have fun.
I recommend the next time you join a guild start talking about your sexual fantasies with Miley Cirus, and see how people react.

What? Anet have not deemed swear words innapropriate in GW because the filter can be turned off. They only state that avoiding the filter is inappropriate.

I don't care about if people swear; I'm of the mind that there is a time and a place. As the User Conduct states "you may not use sexually explicit, harmful, threatening, abusive, defamatory, obscene, hateful, or racially or ethnically offensive language", then GW at large really isn't the place.
If an alliance or guild does not want swearing in alliance/guild chat, then you abide by their rules and don't do it. If you do so and they ask to stop, then the correct course of action is not to throw a fit and act like a spoiled child.
People swearing in general don't bother me. It's when people toss around swear words and then act all offended like they have the right to use such language (guess what - you don't. And don't even say "but freedom of speech" because that shows a very clear misunderstanding of what it actually means), because that's the point where I have to wonder about your maturity level.
And at any rate, does anyone care about manners and common courtesy any longer? I was taught that it was extremely rude to swear in front of strangers, or in a professional setting, or anything like that. Frankly, it's impolite to swear in front of anyone, but it's less frowned upon in casual settings with people you are familiar with.
Basically - act like an idiot, be expected to get called out for acting like an idiot. Learn to exercise caution and use your best judgment, and if you don't, don't be surprised if people think you are crass and rude. And especially do not troll and act like a child if you are politely called out on it.

Interesting.....
Did you by chance consider you were not kicked for your language?
No, you were not kicked for that reason!
You were however kicked for your constant complaining in guild chat about the issue.
You failed to back down from authority and guild/alliance rules and regulations which is common in most guilds/alliances and since you hopped from another guild in our alliance you should have had knowledge of these rules already. BTW our post in the recruiting section states those rules which you failed to abide by.
You make some good points Kain yet fail to see where the line is drawn and belive you have all the right in the world to step over that line.
As was said in guild chat, rules and regualtions are in place for a reason, otherwise the "chaos" you so plainly put it, becomes the norm.

the point is ...this same guild your running down is the same one you begged gold from and was given with no request to give back...you were also asked not to beg in the ac .... hmmm no complaints on that either?....and got the free run from....again. it just looks like your trying to draw attention to yourself as a victim of the night...fact is .. you planned on leaving the guild as soon as you joined it and got what you could from them...pretty sad your skills are limited to this level..and now you try to make it look like the aly you went into is all bad...you need a real life besides the gw life your stuck in...like the others told you..make your own guild and aly and then don't worry bout it.

I do think I see in the first screenshot that you weren't going to be kicked for language.
Had it been me doing the kicking, I wouldn't have kicked you for language either. I would have kicked you for that kind of drama after people politely asked you to stop swearing. You overreacted to what I personally think is a perfectly civil request to not use that language.
(I don't think people should flip out and start screaming just because someone used a swearword, either, but it doesn't seem like your alliance reacted that way.)
Besides, as so many people have said, their guild/alliance, their rules.
(This is why my guild is a nice cozy circle of RL friends who play GW - saves us all this trouble, heh.)

Maybe this is off the topic, but I can assure anyone and everyone that who ever wisped Kain afterwords was not an officer. The only two that know are Kain and that person, unless you are real good at reading the screenshots. For all we know it could be the man on the moon, a friend of his, or another of his own accounts. Kain, please don't imply that an officer of the Guild or Alliance did that. So if all this ranting is intended to flame a "Guild" or "Guild Officers" or a "Guild Leader" because of "What the Guild Did", Kain you are mistaken. You were kicked from the Guild for a variety of reasons, which probably don't need to be aired out all over Guru, unless you really want to. You were not the first person to be ever kicked from a Guild and won't be the last. Like many folks have said in this over-drawn thread, they would have kicked you too.

Generally speaking, if you don't want to see swearwords, you should put on the chat filter. On the other hand, if you're using guild/alliance chat, and that guild/alliance has rules about not swearing, you would also expect people to abide by the rules, yes? Local can be turned off, after all.
People shouldn't flip out over one swearword, but people shouldn't flip out just because someone says 'language please' either.

This pisses me off as well and I live by a simple rule, if something offends me I stop watching/reading/whatever. There's this thing called the 'freedom of speech act' and I firmly stand by it, if people are offended by mere words then they need to go back to school.
This is a mmorpg, people swear and in certain situations it's warranted, if people can't deal with swearing then they should leave.

If you don't want to be part of an alliance where such rules are in place then don't join one, but don't expect people to keep you in a guild where you can't abide by their rules. It really is that simple.

I used to guild hop hopping for a good guild. I had 2 decent ones : one which was pretty much just faction farming and got boring once I stopped trying to work on those title since that's all the guild did, and some other guild which had 2-3 fun member to play with, much better than most guilds, but they got inactive so I left. That's out of a huge number of guilds I tried.
I've decided to stick with this guild I'm in now. I just close GC and AC permanently and play on my own. EverytimeI give AC or GC a try, the alliance leader is hitting on random girls in the guild or saying stupid stuff. The alliance is filled with annoying people spamming on AC and GC with no rules pretty much. You (Kain) should know since you were there not long ago (FDR alliance)...
I've given up on finding a decent guild. Even in the "good" guilds I was in, I have gotten help maybe once or twice with missions, or gotten a partner when asking if anyone wants to play together maybe 2-3 times; this is despite helping several people in pretty much every guild I've been in, which is pretty much the only time I get to play with guild members.
Thank god for ZQuests for bringing teamplay back, ever so slightly (everyone wants me to use overpowered PvE-only skills, but it's better than playing alone).

If you wanna swear in a guild, make one and make the rule that you can swear.
By entering a guild, well the best way to explain it is that its a democracy but theres only one hand that counts, the guild leader.
also, just because a guild does not allow swearing, does not mean its a bad guild, a strick one maybe, but not a bad one. The swearing might be there to keep the atmosphere as calm and relax as possible, to know that when some one is swearing, its time to do something.....well this is mostly an example.
Can't express your self without swearing.....will not impress me. I swear with friends and my brother. Any one I don't know, I will not swear because it does not make a good impression, you will not know there reaction. Get to know people you start swearing.
Lastly, I also have long days, I'm doing a 1 year course ni 6 month with more course then the basic course....very condense and pack. When I log on, I don't feel like seing a you punk with no better thing then swearing to impresse others.
Life is very simple : you play with fire, you are going to get burned.
thats what you did, and you got burned.

Personally, I find there is a fine line between chat being ok/amusing or becoming offensive when swear words are used. And also the age old problem of text - how a person meant a statement. Interpretation is always a problem.
Yes I run a small guild and alliance now, to which the rules are simple - swearing is tolerated in modicum. I want all my guild and alliance people to feel that they belong in a social environment that can allow any age into the fray. A number have their kids in with them too, so it's out of respect and appreciation that a.) children are about and b.) not everyone wants to see profanities. Yes okay, filters are there but I feel if a simple rule is in place, most will abide/cohere to it. Other guilds have no "censorship", which is fine. At the end of the day, it's down the guild "families" to decide on how they be. And police it where appropriate.
I have always found excessive profanities lead to fighting on a 1 to 1/1 to many scale. So this is why I personally prefer this method. A "f*** that was really good" can be fine, a "go f*** yourself" is not.
However, the OP only really has himself to blame here on this one.

I... can only be thankful I'm in a guild/alliance with friends, and we don't give a flying fig about swearing in GC/AC, heh. I don't get what the big deal is with swearing anyway o_O

Ok this is fairly simple. I'm in my mid 30's and I don't even swear ingame. There are things called manners and respect. Some need to learn these. If I do swear it is on vent and making sure the push to talk button is off. (I have no problems admitting that because I am far from perfect.) Bottom line is that if you can't condcut yourself in a decent manner around people then perhaps being a part of a community isn't for you.

Well Like I said before, sometimes swearing is warranted and like the op said, he got the shield he wanted and this was an achievement for him.
Everyone swears and when kids grow up they will swear like anyone else.
However if people swear non stop and use it in a foul way then people deserve to get banned but swearing a few times is no big deal.

Some guild I was in was the same way. They were freaking Nazis.
If you said the word "crap", you got chastised. Even if you put one word in caps, like "YAY!", you got chastised. One time me and this other guildy were talking about something really silly... It was an offhand comment like, "This NPC is on weed LOL" or something like that, and we got yelled at for using "drug references". But yet every other day there would be huge dramafests and buttkssing between the members and the officers/leaders, but God forbiiiiiiiiiiid you say the word "damn", "hell" or something else like, "shut up" "stupid" or "idiot" (even if you weren't even talking about another member). It was advertised as being a mature guild; the people in that guild were 16+ and ranging ages into the 40s, so it wasn't like there were 5-year olds in there. I can understand some people not wanting to see "F*CK B*TCH RED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GO A**" every five seconds, but we got treated like kindergartners!

I'll give the memo to those that didn't see it on the deleted page 9:
I'm a troll. All of this was a setup. I'm not actually someone who bitches over being kicked.
I had simply just set up an excuse by causing a situation like this and getting their attention to make this thread and let things proceed from there to keep us busy until the next skill update, for entertainment, to have some heated debate, and most of all, for lulz.
However, little did I know this thread would get so many pages and at one point, 54 people viewing it, in under 24 hours.
Feel free to ban me if you must. One of the few things I said earlier that were true is that I've been an asshole. Isn't that the whole point of the interwebz?
And if no one starts a heated debate, who will?
edit:
And a special apology to the alliance I was in. It's common sense you probably don't share the same feelings back, but hey, at least I'm apologizing.
But hey, I must say, thank you for the troll material I was able use
