What do you guys think about increasing name lengths?

What do you guys think about increasing the characters permitted to create names for characters?
Even by 3-4-5 characters, it would help people like me be able to make good names for there characters and could increase diversity and uniqueness among names, and i doubt it would contribute detrimentally to lag issues?
Let me get your opinion on it.

Uuuuuuumm... no
I've got 13 chars every with unique name and not related to the others (Nereida Goes Monk or Nereida Goes Pvp)
I can think of 2-3 names right now and it's nothing senseles (I Like Muffins, I Shall Spear U etc)
It's all down to creativity I think
Reading books, playing RPG helps a lot though

I've only run into the problem of too many characters in th creation screen once or twice. There's no shortage of creative names that are 19 or fewer characters long jsut waiting for someone's imagination to discover them.

Afaik Asians can do it. Down with special treatment!

If you don't think players are making good names now, I fail to see how extra, or even less characters would help.

When the naming policy was recently released, we got these 7 rules to obey.
No names that:-
* Have offensive racial, ethnic, or national connotations.
* Reference sexual acts or real life violence.
* Are pornographic.
* Make inappropriate references to human anatomy or bodily functions.
* Reference illegal drugs or activities.
* Reference major religious figures.
* Reference certain real-life people that may cause distress (e.g. Hitler).
I tried to think of a name that breaks all seven rules. I could not think of one that fits in the space we get, we need longer names.
Though I've not doubt just broken another illogical forum rule.

I think the only reason for people wanting more space for a name is if they could not work out a way to get the 'phrase' they wanted shortened. Names are not meant to be phrases.

My actual real name that was given to me when I was born wouldn't fit into a character slot name though... so I tend to disagree with the logic of it.

Would I mind it? No, it would stop me having to put "U" instead of "You" into names.
Will it happen? Database size and developer time says no.

Many good names are taken, particularly those named after skills, and the only good skill names not taken are too long too fit.
I recently found 3-4 new names that I would love to have, but they don't fit.
I also think not being able to use numbers or punctuaction marks is kind of stupid.
And not all of us like muffins, and not all of our real names fit.

I dont' see what the harm could be so I would like it. I have some names where I'd like another space in them.
Pet name is another thing altogether though... way too short.

Nameless Hero - 13 letters. That's fine. But in Spanish...
Heroe sin un nombre - 19 letters. Hmm. I don't think that's enough. Even if you remove "un" it's 16 letters. Even then it should be "El Heroe", as in "The Hero".
Or Polish - Bezimienny Bohater - 18 letters. Woah.
Don't forget that gaps also count.

The char name limitations they put in the game were just added to stop such names.
But this did not stop people to come up with even worse names and abbreviations, on the other hand.

All of my characters have a Blackthorn surname (not counting some mules). It's simple, I like it, and it's nice to be consistent. But that means I can't choose any first names longer than eight characters. If only I had chosen a shorter surname. I had plans for a character named Cassandra Blackthorn, but that's too long (and I dislike intentionally misspelling the name to fit). I wanted to make a character named Elizabeth... also too long.
That said, while I wouldn't mind a longer character name space, I can't see it changing after four years. Especially since it would probably require some significant database manipuation (increasing the name field for every character for every account? oof).

There's a very large number of things I would prefer that limited dev resources be spent upon. The benefit to the community from this change is very low, especially in comparison to problems such as game balance, bug fixes, etc.

Think about languages that are more complicated than English. For instance:
Nameless Hero - 13 letters. That's fine. But in Spanish... Heroe sin un nombre - 19 letters. Hmm. I don't think that's enough. Even if you remove "un" it's 16 letters. Bez-immenuy Kozak - 17 (i think) or Bez-immenuy Geroi - 17 so yeah i wouldnt mind. and this is after simplification.. without it it would look like this.. Bez-immennuy Geroi Ukrainskogo Narodu.. =)

Bezejmenný Hrdina and loose "ý" in favor of "y"
And while we are at it, you can not use those characters in normal chat, but we actually were able to use accents in past.
The Scorpion Knight
Always wondered where the got the random 19 characters lol. Should have just made it an even 20.

Short
I would like an increase in name size, 24 perhaps? Even 20, so many characters of mine have had to ahve a name cut short or changed completely because of one letter.

There's no reason not to reference Natural Selection in every name you make.

I have managed for 4 years with the current limitation. I'm sure I can see out the rest of the game as well..
So that's a no from me.

While we're at it, let's get rid of anybody that uses N A M E, X name X, or I name I, too.
On topic, if they get rid of those stupid names, then by all means extend the character length so that people can make something creative.

are some people forgetting that a few characters could make a huge difference in databse storage....

These are supposed to be people. It's a CORPG. Unless your real name is !Jon2Nu?G, numbers and punctuation marks have no place in these names.

They do XX/II sometimes because the name is already taken. If there was another system where people could have a display name instead maybe that wouldn't happen as much.

And after those 5... people may need 5 more...
Where to stop? ...
...
Oh, it's already decided. 16 characters.
What I would actually like is being able to create names with foreign characters for guilds and characters without being in the actual regions, just with the IME.

So take what I say about database complexity with a grain of salt. Or maybe a whole salt lick.
