Best pet class
meadowlands
I am currently playing the free trial, and wanted to know which class is best for pets. Thanks!

You can only get a pet if you choose the ranger class.

It really depends on what you want weather it be hearty or dire.
How ever Hearty pets deal less damage and have more health then dire ones, while dire pets are the opposite, they deal more damage yet have lower heath than the hearty pets.

Rangers are the only profession that can use them (unless you include minions or spirits), but they really aren't that good. Play with them if you like but don't expect to be as good as you could be.

So rangers only get perm pets? I have a necro and the pets do not last long at all.

If you have Ranger as your primary or secondary profession, you can use the Charm Animal skill to charm a pet that will fight with you whenever you have Charm Animal on your skill bar. The pet can die, but you can res it with Comfort Animal.
Based on what you said above, I think you're raising minions, not pets. Necromancers get skills to exploit corpses and raise minions. They're not supposed to be permanent. However, a well played minion master bar (usually called MM) can be one of the most powerful builds in PvE. Necromancers use minion healing skills to keep their armies alive longer; they use skills like Death Nova to hurt nearby foes when a minion dies.

I guess to compare, I was looking for aclass similar to that of a mage or necro in EQ. The ranger would be it?

animal companions
The ranger animal companion comes with you if you have charm animal as a skill, drop it and they don't show up till you take that skill again.
The more points you have in beastmaster and the more attacks and defences you take for them the more damage they do and the more survivable they are.
As they level up they evolve until they reach lvl 20, check guildwiki for the various evolutions Hearty Elder and Dire.
The Minions raised by Necromancers are totally different they start deteriorating as soon as they are raised.
This is countered by Blood of the master a necro skill, area effect monk heals or the ranger healing spring.
A few other skills heal them too but those are the main ones.
The level of the animation raised also affects how long they last.
Other pets or companions
There are summoning stones that summon various creatures to help you some are single use others are infinite uses.

I heard there is no best pet class cause pets are terrible.

You can choose ranger as the secondary profession and still get pets. Although I'm unsure of how effective a secondary pet build would be as I do not play rangers as primary or secondary.
I just cap a pet and then never use it again.

Pet builds generally are not that popular.
They can be used effectively but suffer from a few limitations and there are always better ways of defeating the enemy.
The basic idea is flawed imo and needed a complete rethink to make them more useful.
Limitations for me are that you pretty much give up all direct attacks by your ranger and instead attack remotely using the pet.
You do not have as good a control of the pet as you do of heroes and of course unlike heroes they don't have their own skill bar.
If they ever create animal companion summoning stones they will totally replace the current animal companion builds in general play.

There are only 3 classes that are sorta like traditional pet classes from other MMOs.
Ritualists - they can summon stationary attacking spirits
Rangers - they have an animal that follows them around and can use special skills
Necromancers - can create several minions from dead bodies
