It seems that for the past few months the activeness of Members and players has greatly Decreased. i fear that in a few more months it will be just as bad or worse. What do you all think? Look at your guild rosters.

I think it's because the game is getting too repetitive, even with the Zaishen missions (which are being repeated instead of new ones being added), as people have already completed them.

The lack of good updates isn't helping matters either. Players look forward to new and improved gameplay and instead get an update full of bugs, making them lose interest in the game even more. There's only so much you can do on this game before it starts to get boring. Hopefully Guild Wars 2 will come out soon, or at least the beta, so the game will get its spunk back.

If you want new content, just wait for Guild Wars 2, then you'll have tons of new content. If ANet would make new content for GW1 it would just push the release date of GW2 back again.

And it seems like alot of new people have joined in the GW1-team, so we can expect good updates every few months, like the one we had on the anniversary.

But it's pretty bad of ANet not to put new ZQuest in (there's still tons of missions which haven't had their turn yet) and just repeat the cycle again...

I was unable to play GW for 2.5 weeks, but after the exams (they end tuesday), I'll play GW alot again, during the 2 months of vacation . For me there's still alot of things to do, though I'm done with most parts of PvP, and also have GWAMM. Not the most fun things to do, but I'm still excited about it, and motivated enough to keep me going.

When/If Anet accounce the rewards for the Hall of Monuments should get some players back to work toward GW2.

Not to mention when the GW2 beta nears people will be coming back in the MASSES trying to get into it.

I believe the bit about the HoM rewards for GW2 is true, but I believe they will announce the awards RIGHT before release, to reduce QQ over the insufficiency/over sufficiency of the rewards.

I also don't see a public beta for GW2 until a few months at most before release. Although this is an unusually short amount of time before a game releases, it seems to be the direction anet is going in. It will probably be a very public beta aswell, which means you do not need to log in to gw1 to get access. That said, if the current timeline for GW2 is 2010-2011, with Anet's current track record, expect a beta and HoM rewards announced in Q3 2011 and release on Dec. 31st 2011.

To the OP, GW players have been fluctuating since factions release. I've gone through nearly 3 full friends' lists of people I knew more than just casually. Player numbers are lower than ever because there are no new campaigns or expansions, which anet knew would happen when they started work on their bold new project (GW2). However, what I find disappointing is that Anet is no better than other companies in that they will try to inflate numbers by saying how many copies have been sold, but not how many active players there actually are.

I don't blame them for it though. Why expose your weakness?

It has something to do with the game getting old, it also has something to do with it being summer. Activity always drops in the summer. People go on vacations, or they only played Guild Wars because it was a great time killer after classes if you go to a University.

Once September comes around activity will start to rise again. Of course not everyone will come back, because every month there are people who leave the game for good. But those people who are coming back from vacations or only played Guild Wars when they had a lot of free time with little else to do will be back.

2 of my friends just got the game and I've been playing more now because of them, but I admit it is disheartening that they didn't have a chance to go through the low level areas back when the game was still new and there were plenty of people doing every mission. I don't think it's changed too much though just recently, and has been a more gradual process as one would expect from an aging MMO that focuses on end-game content.

As far as people quitting in large numbers out of boredom, the alliance I'm in hasn't been having any more quitters recently than normal.

It's inevitable when you have a game that doesn't require a monthly payment or a long grind. You do everything and then there's nothing left to do. You have three choices -
A) Do it all over again
B) Take a break
C) Move on

With a game that is over 4 years old, B and C are becoming more common.

I might come back to the game if I get to play on my laptop a bit. Just got a new account and I tried dual-running GW and running myself (hehe) through Vizunah. And thanks to a bug in the mission (Togo went ahead of the team, Mhenlo stayed to wand an Afflicted, Togo dies before my heroes manage to get to him), I rage-quit and don't want to touch Cantha for now.

There's also option D. Go grind titles like Luxon, Treasure Hunter and stuff. If you've done all the possible titles (that's like 36-37), you can still put all possible items in your HoM. And you can also set some goals for your own, like collecting all greens and stuff.

But D, is ofcourse only for the very dedicated players, I guess.

Or you could actually...I don't know.....PvP?

Learning to GvG and improving at it would keep you in the game for a year, and then once your actually good, you can continue to play and now compete in monthlies until GW2 comes out.

Any well-designed competitive game can be played forever.

... the question at this point is whether GW is a well-designed competitive game.

Don't base your ideas on playerbase size on your guild's rooster. Guilds were dying off back in 2005 just aswell as in 2009.

My observations are completely different - since the April update I see significantly increased number of active players everywhere. And it's not just the concentration of players that's creating an illusion of high player activity - AT THE SAME TIME there are lots of players doing the latest zquests and there's the same or higher number of players everywhere else. The game is in far better state than it was in say March'09

for a game this old and repetitive, i play it more frequently and looking forward to play it, after doing some random pvp for the day, each night. but i do understand most of the players who moved on. you can't do much after completing the game (play through all chapters + the expansion once), unless you want to participate in competitive pvp or grind titles.

this is no rant.

What does the game offer today that makes it worth coming back for?

The only thing it has to offer for people who've been around a long time is most likely the high end pvp, however that takes a while and a lot of dedication to break in to and if it isn't well balanced or the meta is stale, people won't even bother to do that.

Funny thing, when Blizzard announced new info about Diablo III, Diablo II was the top selling game for that week. People remembered how great a game it was, and went out and rebought lost copies to play it for awhile. Perhaps ANet could keep us more interested in their sequel and people would be less apt to stray if they think a new game is on the horizon instead of a few disparate pieces of concept art.

true it has been going on for a while now but it seems now more of all(because more time) that ppl are leaving and not coming back or just log on to sit there. i think if Anet hopes to keep that suspense about gw2 and hope to rack in big sales for gw2. then more info to wet the apatite of people to pull them back before the gone.

This is just because of the diablo 3 hype. Before the announcement d2 was pretty much abandoned and full of bugs/dupes.

The PvE end of this game gets dry that when you move on and Play PvP you will find that many PvP guilds still have active rosters.

Offcourse the playerbase decreases. For various reasons mentioned:

- Lack of new content.
Nothing new in PvE world. The extra storage adds nothing playable. The Zaishen Quests are repeating old stuff. Just like they tried with the mission books a few months earlier. Nothing new storywise.

- Lack of information on future updates.
They said they would be more open. They aren't at all except that their CM can't remember what they said before on the official website.

- Lack of information on GW2.
People get tired of waiting for new GW1 content. GW2 news... where? Anet risks that other games tie their playerbase for the next few years.

- Lack of care for PvP updates.
How about some new maps? PvP has so much potential in this game and still Anet just leaves it hanging on a thin line atm. With a few delayed balance updates, wrong skill balance, their now promised PvP love has to be very good if they want to boost the morale to play PvP.

- People quit for many reasons.
The larges playerbase quits because they have real life changes that doesn't allow them to play GW everyday. Something that many GW-junkies on this forum can't understand when they sip their red-bull and play the same map for another 5 hours.

OK lets cut out all this "wahhh if we had GW2 info we'd play GW1". It's such BS. Lets also stop the "If they don't release GW2 info soon I am not going to buy it" too. I can't believe you people actually think those threats will trick Anet into releasing info about GW2. Just sit still and stfu, releasing info to you in no way will benefit them or increase sales. But what it will do is allow competitors more time to copy them.

A decreasing player base is really starting to cause problems though. The Dragons Throat is sometimes completely empty, and it's going to be hard for me to start my guild back up from ground level when we're losing players.

No, but thousands of people still play Starcraft, Warcraft 3 and Diablo 2. All of those games are much older than Guild Wars, no?

Also because Diablo 3 is real. We've seen gameplay, concept arts, screenshots... While Guild Wars 2 has nothing. So people can't hype about it.

Unless they are rabid fanboys that will see hours of gameplay out of one concept art from 2006.

I think they wont release new info untill aion gets released. They probably dont want to hype a game that will be release in a year while they got one about to come out now.

Abedeus whats your point really? Thousands of people still play gw aswell, so where are you trying to get? Blizzard games are only played again because they just got hyped. Before they were pretty much empty.

Activity has been on the way down for about a year now, actually longer than that, I think.
Majority of the people on my friends list (which is full) do not log on anymore and guilds I played with or were a part of, have all gone silent over time.

Well the majority I think has done what they wanted to in GW1 and are just waiting for GW2. It is still a great game but there is only so much one can take before it becomes too repetitive. My guild is lucky if we get 15 people a day now and if it wasn't for having an alliance I do not believe I would even log into the game.

If Guild Wars remained a competitive game (like it originally was) there would not be as big of an erosion of players. When GW turned into a more PvE/MMO focused game, the erosion grew exponentially when people realized no new content would be released.
